Upon entering college and moving into the dorms, you learn very quickly that walls are thin. That's not exactly a bad thing when your neighbor is a good friend of yours and you like to knock on each other's wall. Sometimes though, you get neighbors that like to blast music during regular hours (so you can't be too mad). Then you have the ones who blast "God Bless America" on repeat at ungodly hours. To prevent you from being the Asshole who blasts music at awful hours, here are some tips: 1. If you want to blast music, do it at a decent hour. Not at 12:30 in the morning. Some people have class, some have work. Some people just plain enjoy sleep. Playing "God Bless America" repeatedly at 12 a.m. only turns your nice neighbors into bitches who hate you for at least a week. Let's not do any of that. 2. If people are knocking on your door/wall and it sounds like they're trying to get your attention, they most likely want you to stop. Learn to take a hint. Not only are you being completely ridiculous for playing the same song over and over again, but apparently you like to ignore your neighbors who are nice enough not to report you. 3. Don't do something that would irritate you because chances are it irritates other people too. This is one of those things where you can't think, "it's okay if I do it, but fuck the people who do it when I'm trying to sleep." That makes you a hypocritical asshole. Just don't do it. 4. Just go to bed. It's Sunday, we all have class tomorrow. Enough said. yesh.

Always get feedback, whether that be on essays, exams, homework or your general performance. In all cases, especially those where you can’t obtain formal feedback {i.e. from receiving a graded essay or test back}, arrange to meet with your tutor to discuss your progress.

Whether it’s midterms or finals, exam weeks can be the source of all evil. I have seen students break down and cry in the middle of campus one too many times. However, it doesn’t have to be complete hell. Here are my favourite stress-managing tips!

1. Try not to be last minute.

This one is obviously the stress-managing tip you’re all tired of hearing. Of course, it is normal to work extra harder during exam week, but being up to date in your lectures and/or exercises helps. A LOT. Having a breakdown at 3pm due to major catching-up issues is the worst. Trust me, I’ve been there far too often.

2. Plan things out

Bullet journal. Sticky notes. To-Do list. Calendar. Anything that suits you. Planning things out makes you feel in control of the situation. Sometimes, with all the studying and projects to carry out, I panic a little and end up doing absolutely nothing. The studyblr community is full of planning tips and organization advice, be inspired!

3. Talk

Not to yourself (though I can’t say I don’t do it myself but that’s not the point). Stress usually gets bottled up very fast, and communication is a very important outlet. If you feel like breaking down, or like things are slipping out of your control, or just plain lack some motivation, talk to somebody! Friends are always there to support you, and while staying inside alone with your notebooks can be productive, it can drive you insane after a while. Venting is fun, do it!

4. Do something fun every day

When I’m in a big studying rush, I like to get away sometimes and reward myself with something I enjoy. Paint your nails, go for a run (if you’re into that kind of personal torture), cook a fancy meal, anything! It helps brighten your day and focus on something else. 

5. Sleep sleep sleep

I cannot stress this enough. Fatigue will only worsen your stress and affect your productivity. During exam season, 8 hours can be a little difficult to achieve, but a good 6 is plenty. All nighters are not the solution. 

6. Pay your teachers a visit

Make sure you know exactly the content of the exam so you can target your studying. You can also ask them last minute questions that are bugging you. If your teachers are the kind that don’t answer questions before exams then 1. What even are they and 2. You can always asks people around! Just make sure they are a reliable source ;)

Reasons to Leave a Building on Fire

This morning at 1:30 a.m., our dorm room fire alarm went off. In a deep sleep, our high pitched fire alarm seemed to convince my unconscious mind that I was, for some reason, being arrested. Waking up to the blinding lights of the alarm I woke Ems up, and proceeded to put mildly presentable clothes on. 

If you’re wondering why I would put normal people clothes on instead of heading to the nearest exit, it’s because fire alarms are a normal part of our college life. In fact, the other dorm on campus set off the alarms five nights in a row. It’s no secret that the local fire department loves us. We go way back.

If you’re like us, and have false alarms caused by other recreational activities, know that you should always leave a building when the fire alarm goes off.

Just in case you need help figuring out what to do, here are some helpful tips:

1. Don’t argue with your roommate about whether or not it’s real.

Emilie seems to think that all fire alarms are a lie (she lived in the other dorm in the previous semester). So trying to get her to actually get out of bed was a struggle. Turns out I save this bitch’s (this bitch is the most common affectionate name we have for each other, don’t be alarmed) life!

2. Find out where your RA or neighbors are congregating.

This is so that, in case of a real emergency, they can assure that they know you aren’t passed out or dying. Keep in mind they are responsible for you, and some fifty college kids are a handful.

3. Fish before you ditch.

If you have a pet, save them too because they can’t save themselves. Our neighbor Cop Josh rescued his pet fish after realizing that this was a real emergency. You’re the real MVP Cop Josh 👍

4. Don’t overload the dryer.

The reason for our fire? An overloaded dryer. First of all, why is someone doing laundry at 1:30 a.m.? Do your goddamn laundry at a decent hour like the rest of us. Second, this is why you need to learn how to do your laundry properly before you come to college. High school Seniors, take a page from you Mom’s Book of Domestic Chores because this is what happens when you don’t pay attention. 

In all, this experience has basically taught me to be thankful for my mother, never have a pet in the dorms, be appreciative of my RAs, and pack my roommate a “the building is on fire” kit. All wonderful things to be aware of.

Also, totally thankful for our friends because they let us stay in their room. Yesh.
