Me when I am in a horrors barely in reach of my comprehension and my oponent is Gemini Man:

My favorite conversation to have with people is when they ask me what Mega Man game to pick up first if they’re just starting out because they always get so shocked when I tell them DO NOT start with Mega Man 1.

“…But isn’t that the first game?”

Buddy I don’t dislike MM1 but it will leave you decimated unless you are the bravest solidier and can fight through the storm.

Pick up 2 or 11 and go from there, please.

Wanna elaborate on my stance on this and why the game is like that™ because the entire thing fascinates me.

To put it simply, the game’s mechanics suffers from first game syndrome, where it’s trying to find its place, but it’s not there yet until people came back with their opinions, making MM2 more refined.

To put it in more detail, due to the fact this was the first game of its time, MM1 borrowed some of its functions from other platformers at the time, mainly Mario.

The problem? Mario does not make a full stop when you cease his movement.

Now, this isn’t an issue for Mario games because the platforming allows some room for movement and encourages running starts, but for Mega Man, a meticulous platformer, where you need to time everything perfectly, it is in fact, not fun, when you mean to stop at the edge of a platform just to fall off the cliff.

Add that to other unnecessary mechanics like a timer and score system and it just had a lot of mechanics that clashed with some of the more appealing, unique elements of the game.

And look, as overblown as MM2 is now, it took a lot of those issues and gave the series much needed tweaking to make Mega Man it’s own platformer rather than just ripping off of Mario.
