Have you heard of the Oculus Rift? Are you a gamer, and if so, what impact do you think this will have on gaming? Very excited about the possibilities :)

EUREKA
Syfy, 9 p.m. ET; 7/16/2012
SERIES FINALE: “Just Another Day” is the title of this week’s episode, but it’s anything but. In fact, this is the last day for Eureka, and this final hour is a wrap-up that was written and filmed quite quickly, because the cancellation by Syfy was somewhat unexpected. So along with the anything-goes atmosphere, enjoy the jokes that are not-so-subtle allusions to the show’s treatment by the network. As Eureka the series is shut down, so is Eureka the town…
- David Bianculli
Seriously, you ALL need to be watching Eureka on SyFy tonight (if you have it)!! And for the record, we're still severely disappointed that this isn't a 2-hour long episode :( The show, the cast, the crew and the fans deserve more!
So, the twin and I have both managed to grab beta keys for the Guild Wars 2 upcoming beta weekend (July 20-22) and are trying desperately not to lose our ever loving minds over the next few days while we wait, LOL!! You could pretty much sum up the entirety of our emotions with the following images:
In the meantime, we've been watching a megaton of YouTube videos and thought it might be fun to grab some screencaps from the Character creation vids and try to create our characters before getting in game, it was a pain but overall kinda fun! The image above shows my character, who will be a human Elementalist, and my twin's character, who will be a human Mesmer. Really love what we've seen of the character creation process and can't wait to try it out for real!!
Some other things we're excited about in no particular order:
Personal Stories
Home Instances
NO grinding (WOOT!)
True cooperative gameplay - no kill stealing & camping nodes!
Dynamic Events
So what are you excited about? And, if you'll be playing this coming weekend, what server will you be on and why?
The Doctor and Rose love each other. I think it’s that simple - Euros Lyn, director of Doctor Who
THIS. Because we ♥ Dr/Rose so, so much!!
Well this isn’t creepy, right? (at the YouTube site) (Taken with Instagram)
LOVE this photo! Creepy or not, it's pretty awesome ;)
The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters on July 20 - a mere 10 days before our birthday - YAY!! We adore Batman. Everything about him. We have watched every movie incarnation since the day of our birth and watched extensive hours of the animated series when we were kids. This set of movies is by far our favorite telling of this well-known hero's journey. In the trailer released with Avengers in May, Selina Kyle (played by Anne Hathaway), shares a bit of dialogue with Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) "There's a storm coming." "You sound like you're looking forward to it." Well we sure as heck are!!
OMG just saw the most recent trailer for Total Recall and it's the best one yet!! So excited for this movie - we are absolutely going to have to see it on IMAX!
We LOVE weddings! We love happy endings, we love seeing the Prince get his Princess, and we just love 'love'! =D As you may or may not know, one of our day jobs is creating, printing and shipping wedding invitation sets to brides all over the country (and the world)! Up until this point, we have stuck to the 'traditional' mold when it comes to designing invitations for our brides, but we are happy to announce that we are branching out and embracing our love for the geeky, the modern, the offbeat, and the quirky! One Awesome Weekend!
So something amazing happened this weekend. We got to be part of a project to produce a calendar called "Women of Geekdom" which features everyday women who also happen to be geeks! The idea was to destroy the typical 'geek' stereotype and show that women can be geeky, and attractive and all-around awesome too! So, naturally, when we first heard about it, we were completely on board :)
The project was started by Laura Rosado and her husband, Shaun of the Shauncastic podcast, fellow local Charleston-ites. They brought in a diverse group of talented ladies from all over the country, including Laura herself, and let them pick their favorite characters from movies/games/tv, etc... dress in full costume and do a completely legit and incredible photoshoot! In addition to Laura, the models included Christina Janke, Stormy (real name!) Piazza, Sandy Bergeron (costuming expert), Jenna Busch (geek host and entertainment writer), Dodger (YouTube video game vlogger), Nicole Jekich (geek and artist), Chloe Dykstra (model and geek host), Victoria (Dash) Williams (actress), Misti Dawn (life blogger), and Satine Phoenix (freelance artist and actress). These ladies were all absolutely wonderful to work with, hilarious, super-nice and all amazingly talented! While the whole project took several days to complete, we were only able to pitch in for one full day (Saturday) and an evening shoot (Friday). Our jobs were to basically just be as helpful as possible, run errands, cart people around, hold signs, direct traffic and help the photographer (the amazing Melissa Breeland) with equipment and whatever else she needed! We've never played the part of 'crew' for any project on this scale before so it was a really different and unique experience! It was HOT, the hours were long, but every second was 100% worth the effort. We don't think we've ever had so much fun putting in a days work before! Laura and Shaun did an amazing job - everything was so well organized (even if the schedule worked out a 'little' differently than expected) and they pulled together one heck of a team!! From the videographers (Anthony & Charles) to the Makeup Artists (Larissa, Rob and Celina), and the rest of the crew (Dallas, Rico, James, Donald, and a few we didn't get to meet in person), everyone was professional, passionate about the project, and a whole lot of fun! We enjoyed working with everyone and felt really privileged to be a part of something so cool! It hit all of our 'geek' buttons and it was amazing to spend a whole day with a group of people who love all of this stuff as much as we do! We can virtually guarantee that when this calendar comes out you are DEFINITELY going to want one!! If you'd like to find out more, head on over to the Kickstarter page that launched this project into reality. We'll keep you posted as the project progresses!
Geeks for a Cause
We love when good people get together and do nice things! We love it even more when good people get together around their favorite hobbies / movies / games, etc. and leverage their power as a group to help make a difference for some important charities! Geeks - as a group of people defined and motivated by their passions - have an incredible (almost supernatural) ability to mobilize and make things happen. Such is the case with some of our favorite Geek causes:
Can't Stop the Serenity:
Can’t Stop the Serenity (CSTS) is a unique opportunity to indulge your geeky side while doing some good! Since 2006, fans have organized screenings of Joss Whedon's Serenity to raise funds and awareness to support Equality Now in their work for the protection and promotion of the human rights of women around the world. Join us as we aim to misbehave for a good cause!
Since 2006, CSTS has raised over $600,000 for Equality Now and other local charities. There are currently over 40 screenings registered for 2012 in several countries. Check the official events list here for details. Our local CSTS screening in Charleston, SC is also supporting a charity called Herb vs. The Brain Foundation. The foundation helps provide cancer patients with durable medical equipment that they might otherwise not be able to afford. It was started to honor the life of Herb Iwer the 4th, who was diagnosed with a brain stem glioma at the age of 26 and passed away in November of 2010.
Child's Play: Chances are, if you have been involved with gaming and/or geekdom for any length of time, you have heard of this charity. But, just in case, here is the lowdown:
Since 2003, we’ve set up and organized Child’s Play, a game industry charity dedicated to improving the lives of children with toys and games in our network of over 70 hospitals worldwide. Over the years, you as a community have answered the call and come together to raise millions of dollars. With the help of hospital staff, we set up gift wish lists full of video games, toys, books, and other fun stuff for kids.
One of the coolest things about Child's Play is that they make it so easy for regular people to plan and run their own fundraising events. Many gamers have banded together over the years to run Gaming Marathons, using their favorite video games as a way to drive fundraising and have a great time gaming with friends in the process! We are always on the lookout for new or even existing charities / causes for geeks to support and promote! Drop us a comment if we left out your favorite charity and we might just feature them in a future post!
Don't Fear the Inner Geek
So the two of us have been on a journey for a while now... a journey through a struggle that some of you can probably identify with more than you'd like to admit! For some reason, this struggle seems to be more common in geek-culture than anywhere else but it's something that almost everyone has dealt with a some point in their lives - the struggle between who you are and who you pretend to be. This blog was actually started as the result of a revelation! We suddenly realized (though more than likely this has been developing over the last few months and maybe even years!) that we were not okay with just being "us" ... that we needed to put on a face and behave in a certain way that was more socially acceptable ... and this was just plain wrong! Neither of us would tell people that we've been to several sci-fi conventions (despite the fact that we met some of the coolest people & had a blast!), or that we had a wall full of sci-fi & fantasy movies and a drawer full of signed memorabilia. That was all just too much to share and if we wanted to be accepted, then we needed to keep this stuff out of sight. This all came to a head between the current series our church is running (The Me I Want to Be) and an exceptional blog post we stumbled across earlier this week. The post was called "What It Means to Be a Geek" and is written by Becky Chambers for The Mary Sue blog. Here are two snippets:
"If you like something so much that a casual mention of it makes your whole being light up like a halogen lamp, if hearing a stranger fondly mention your favorite book or game is instant grounds for friendship, if you have ever found yourself bouncing out of your chair because something you learned blew your mind so hard that you physically could not contain yourself — you are a geek."
"When someone with that tell-tale mindset says “I don’t want to be a geek,” what they are unwittingly saying is “I don’t want the potential to meet other people who share my enthusiastic interests.” That sounds pretty lonely to me... I just think there are an awful lot of geeks in hiding who haven’t let themselves really explore their interests or those interests’ surrounding communities, purely because they’re afraid of the social ramifications." (read the entire article here - you'll be glad you did!)
She could have been writing directly to us! That's what we've struggled with for a long time, giving in to the things that really make us happy and being "real" or putting on that socially-acceptable mask and stuffing the rest of what really make us unique into a closet. We don't want to be those people. Ultimately, hiding the parts of you that get excited about things, your uniqueness, your personality — that is soul-killing. You are robbing yourself of the freedom to be who you were made to be and you are robbing the world of a unique and beautiful personality that they would be better-off knowing! So, this blog is, in a sense, two-parts fun, and one-part therapy!! This is us finally being real, sharing the things we "geek out" about, and finding others who share the same excitement! We'd love to hear your personal journeys as well and hope to get to know some of our fellow 'geeks' though the months ahead!
