↳ Reminders
RULES & ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS: Please take the time to re-read our Rules and the requirements for assignments before signing up. RATINGS: If you are interested in receiving or creating Mature/Explicit level works (see Ao3 rating(s)), you must "opt in" by checking the "E" box for both offers and requests. Please note you must be 18+ to offer/request/create Mature or Explicit level gifts. For a more detailed explanation, click here. TREATS: If you are open to receiving treats, or a specific type of treat (single-recipient, multi-recipient, fanart, fanfic), you must "opt in" by saying so in the sign up description box. This field does not apply to your offers. For a more detailed explanation, click here. "OTHER ROOKS": Because there are so many different options for Rook, we are allowing participants to opt-in to a wider range via the Optional Details box so long as they'd be considered eligible. For a more detailed explanation, click here.
For a how-to-guide of the whole exchange that includes all of the information in this post, please take a look at our Participation Walkthrough Guide and FAQ.
DETAILED STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO SIGN-UPS BELOW THE CUT:
1. SIGN IN TO AO3
If you don’t have an Ao3 account, contact the mods for help!
2. GO TO THE BLACK EMPORIUM SIGNUP FIELD (LINK)
3. SCROLL TO THE “REQUESTS” FIELD
Once nominations are finished, you'll be able to sign up. In your sign-up, you'll specify the works you'd like to receive and the works you're willing to create. (They do not necessarily have to be the same!)
You must fill out at least three requests and three offers. You may only select each pairing once, but may give multiple ideas per pairing in your prompt.
If you are interested in receiving Mature- or Explicit-rated works, you must be at least 18 years old and opt-in by checking the appropriate box ("E"); this is not a guarantee you will receive a higher level.
You will have to fill out several fields on the sign-up form:
↳ Relationships
Here you can write in the relationships that you wish to request. As long as it is part of the tag set/eligible nominated pairings, it should be able to be selected here.
If your chosen relationship is in the tag-set but isn't auto-completing, this is unfortunately a bug on AO3's end that we cannot fix -- but if you copy and paste your relationship from the tag-set into this field, you should be able to submit. (Please contact moderators via email at [email protected] if you get an error and let us know what the error was.)
We have increased the amount of allowed Requests per participant from 30 to 40!
You may list between 1-4 pairings in the same Request field. That does not (necessarily) mean you want all four ships in the same fanwork. We allow multiple pairings in the same Request Field because it allows participants to request up to 40 unique pairings, rather than just 10. Some people group thematically, or by character.
Example of someone requesting three, non-connected pairings. The participant here loosely grouped their "platonic" ships together into one Request Field.
Example of someone requesting a pairing.
↳ Additional Tags
This field is to mark if you're open to receiving fanfiction, fanart, or both (check both boxes), for this request.
Example of someone requesting ONLY fanart for any pairings listed in this Request field.
↳ Ratings (Requests)
If you are open to receiving Mature- or Explicit-rated works, please check the box to indicate your interest. We use the AO3 ratings guide as far as judging what each rating entails.
Any participant under 18 should NOT indicate interest in M or E works, as those are intended for 18+ audiences only.
Please choose your ratings carefully! Indicating interest in receiving higher rating works does not mean you are guaranteed to receive them, just that other people will be allowed to gift them to you in this exchange. If you're not comfortable with that possibility, do not check this box.
This recipient did not check the "Explicit" box; they will not receive any Mature or Explicit level works.
↳ Letter
This is a place to put a link to a letter, if you have one. A letter generally is a completely optional, longer version of the description field, and might include more details you'd like your creator to know, or things like pictures that are hard to paste into the description box.
Letters are commonly hosted on Dreamwidth, Tumblr, Google docs, or other such freely accessible websites.
Please note that the moderators cannot enforce any DNWs you put only in your letter.
Completely optional field. Leave blank if you don't have a letter.
↳ Description
Please feel free to use this field to go into some detail about what you would like; this helps give the creator of your work some different ideas about what they could make for you.
If you are open to treats, please indicate interest. See "Treats" for more.
Because there are so many different options for Rook, we are allowing participants to opt-in to a wider range via the Optional Details box. If you've participated before and used our Treat template, this is a similar idea! Post here explaining how.
Examples of prompts or helpful information you could share with your recipient (reminder, your creator is not required to follow your prompts/likes):
General trope likes, e.g., Fluff, First Kiss, Dwarven lore, There Was Only One Bed, Enemies to Lovers, etc.
Stylistic likes, e.g., 2nd person writing, Tarot Card art, chat-fic, etc.
World state options you favor that are relevant to your prompt, e.g., Anora is Queen/Alistair is King, Canon Divergent - Multiple Wardens, Modern AUs, etc.
A sentence or two about why you like the pairing, e.g., "I love Cassandra being flustered around people she likes!"
"What If?" prompts, especially open ended ones, e.g., "What if Blackwall did the Joining ceremony with the Hero of Ferelden in DAO? Or met HoF in the Deep Roads during the Jaws of Hakkon DLC in DAI? Would they have similar perspectives, or different?"
Rating restriction clarifications, e.g., interested in E rated smut, but not E rated violence
Be sure to list your Do Not Wants (DNWs) — if they're not listed in the Description box of your sign up, then the mods cannot enforce your DNWs. If your DNWs are poorly worded or go against exchange rules, they will also be considered unenforceable.
Example Description. This person has NOT opt into treats and cannot receive any. Please see here for more help formulating your DNWs.
4. CONTINUE TO THE “OFFERS” FIELD
The process to Offers is similar to Requests when it comes to pairings and denoting interest in creating fanart and/or fanfic. However, there are a couple differences one should make note of:
↳ Ratings (Offers)
If you are interested in creating Mature- or Explicit-rated works, please check the box to indicate your interest. We use the AO3 ratings guide as far as judging what each rating entails.
Any participant under 18 should NOT indicate in creating M or E works, as those are intended for 18+ audiences only.
Please choose your ratings carefully! You will be matched on this field; if you're not comfortable with receiving prompts that may include NSFW or "E" elements, do not check this box.
↳ "Notes to mods" Field
If you want, you can write notes to the mods, but this isn't required. Some things you might want to include:
If you are under 18 or do not want to receive any "E" requests/prompts from your recipient, please put a simple "No 'E' requests" or in your sign up. This will not disclose your age as we have adult participants who have asked this of mods over the years.
If you're attempting to avoid all spoilers related to Dragon Age: The Veilguard, including any details that may be included in a prompt sign-up, please write a note to alert mods.
The AO3 username of any individual(s) you don't want to be matched with. You don't have to provide a reason as to why you don't want to be matched with someone, but we will rely entirely on the name(s) you enter; if you ask not to be matched with FanficWriter69 but you meant FanficWriter96, we can't guarantee you won't get matched. For the sake of everyone's stress level, triple check any names and make sure you're giving us their AO3 username.
Please do not use this field to ask to be matched with a specific person.
↳ "Any Relationship" Box
If you would like, you can offer to create a work for "Any Relationship."
PLEASE ONLY CHECK THIS BOX IF YOU TRULY MEAN ANY RELATIONSHIP.
The only qualifications you can make are the category of pairings (i.e. F/F, F/M, M/M, Other, Gen, or Multi) or by DA game (i.e. DAO, DA2, DAI). You cannot differentiate by any other qualification or request.
An example of someone offering to draw fanart for any F/F pairing.
An example of someone offering to create fanart and/or fanfiction for the pairing "Fenris & Donnic Hendyr," but requesting not to be matched with a specific user.
5. A NOTE ON MATCHING
After sign-ups are completed, creators and recipients are matched based on their sign-ups. Matches are one-way; that is, while it is possible A may write for B and B may write for A, you are more likely to have A writing for B, and B writing for C, and C writing for A.
You will be assigned to someone who has at least one request that matches at least one of your offers for the below two fields: relationship pairing and type of fanwork.
You will be matched with someone who requested:
at least one of the pairings for which you offered to write or draw ("Relationship" field), and
at least one type of fanwork you offered ("Additional Tags" field aka fanfic, fanart, or both — if both, you can create an assignment in either format; you are not obligated to create two assignments), and
whether or not you've both indicated interest in Mature- or Explicit-rated content ("E" checkbox)
You are guaranteed to have a match by the end of the date listed under "Assignments" in the schedule. If you do not have a match by then, please contact the mods via email at [email protected].
For anyone wondering…I am alive and doing okay. Life hasn’t been conducive to writing lately (or non-mandatory human interaction in general), and I don’t know if that’s going to change any time soon. But life isn’t awful, and eventually I’ll be back to writing things I can actually post (e.g., not three lines of context-free dialogue or half a scene from a novel-length work).
To the various people who have emailed me, messaged me, and left comments, please consider this a blanket apology for the radio silence you received in reply. It’s not you, it’s me (for real). I do read comments (though let’s not talk about email), and they always brighten my day. Thank you, and please don’t take my silence to mean I don’t appreciate them. 💚
Exit Light by Dragonflies_and_Katydids (@dragonflies-and-katydids)
Fandom: Dragon Age: Inquisition
Ship: Iron Bull/Dorian Pavus/Cullen Rutherford
Start Date: 9/13/24
End Date: 9/30/24

First book bind I'm actually giving to another human. This fic is one of my best friend's favorites - and I found I really liked it too.
Crazy how purple the book cloth looks in photos. It's a DARK navy in person, so the tower and the title POP - but the lightning looks CRAZY cool. It's reflective - the effect is much easier to see in the standing spine photo
The tower is a HUGE theme in this fic - and a good chunk of the story revolves around the fight to not climb up to the top of it and find an alternative way down. I kept that theme for the whole book. The author had quotes at the beginning of every chapter, so those I've pulled out and formatted within the stonework for each chapter headers.
The header for the chapter with the climax of the story is the only header where you see the top of the wall…
Bondage is also a bit of a theme in the fic, ho ho, so there are a few knots and ropes for the page breaks.
Trim for this fucking book was fire. Headbands were also ON FUCKIING POINT.
This book has a sister - it's less attractive, darker sister - for my personal library. I'm so glad I did a trial run. With how small I originally cut everything, the scale of the entire cover was so off that i needed to redo it. AND it cut really horribly because of how small (and complicated) the image was. The color change and the castle angle updated for the real cover is - in my opinion - a great fucking improvement.
Noted to me for next time - this font, dude? Again? REalLy??
Go read Exit Light, and eat through everything Dragonflies has written. They deserve all of those sweet kudos!
Looking for an excuse to write tentacles? If so, I would like to point you toward the remaining pinch hit for Cephaloparty, which is the tentacle exchange I’m running. I don’t play in any of the fandoms the recipient requested, or the pinch hit would already be gone, because those freeform tags have my name written all over them. I’m hoping someone else around here will feel the same.
Works don’t need to be explicit, or even contain a sexual or romantic relationship at all. The only requirements are that the work be about tentacles and match at least one of the recipient’s requests. Fic must be at least 1,000 words and art must be at least clean line art.
Deadline negotiable, though if you can finish in time for us to open at noon EDT on Saturday, 18 March, that would be fabulous.
Relationship Maintenance and Rates of Relationship Decay
A concept I've seen named/discussed among people with ADHD (alas, I have ADHD and don't remember where I saw this) is that they don't experience "relationship decay" the way other people do. For those of you reading this who have never seen these conversations before, many folks with ADHD have people in their life they care about, like hearing from, enjoy talking to, and want to know about and be involved with - and will also (unintentionally) forget to actually talk to or respond to those people for great lengths of time. For some folks with ADHD, long spans of time without contact don't cause "decay" in the relationship, and they still feel attached to and involved with others despite the chronological distance between their interactions. The problem is that while those people with ADHD haven't experienced relationship decay in that time, the people on the other end of things often have. This is a frequently-bemoaned problem among people with ADHD, many of whom feel like they can't "keep up" with people well enough to have lasting relationships.
I think relationship decay is a concept that's relevant to many relationships, though, because rates of decay vary hugely in many circumstances, not just between individuals of different neurotypes. I know some people, for example, who don't feel intimate with their friends/partners without multiple interactions by text throughout the day every day, with often a minimum of several hangouts in person per week. Meanwhile, I know other people who talk to each other by phone once every six months, text one another short affectionate messages every two weeks or so, and consider one another best friends.
What causes relationship decay also varies. For some, lack of contact IS what causes the decay, and it doesn't matter how much trust or regard there is without regular contract. For others, feelings of closeness and security are easy to maintain across time with people whose regard they feel certain of, while with people whose regard they feel uncertain of, they need much much more relationship maintenance to feel at all close.
With all of this being the case, I wish it was more common for people to say outright what they need in terms of relationship maintenance to stave off decay with each other. Instead, I mostly see people couch this in moralistic, often derogatory terms. "So-and-so is so insensitive, they didn't think to contact me this week at all," or "So-and-so is so pathetic, they can't go five minutes without needing to hear from me." Certainly there are some situations where lack of contact does denote disregard, and where demands for contact are intrusive and harmful, but I also see this kind of moralistic take applied to situations that are a simple mismatch or lack of communication about relationship maintenance needs and capabilities.

She makes a shit ton of poses (like 16,000 or some crazy nonsense). I used this lovely lady to draw so much as a teen. Whether it was some nerdy pose for my Mary Sue as fuck OCs
or for full on fight sequences
or for tragic deaths of my OCs in the arms of a totally OOC main protagonist.
this bitch hooked me up.
And with the wildest, craziest stuff that you could see in your head but had no way or resources to reasonably draw like
or this
or this
DUDE! INASNE SHIT!! So I was using her for a pose reference and decided, you know what, I owe this bitch some cash. Lemme dole it out for her. BUT then, I looked and saw she only has 286 fucking patrons!! This chick gives out free shit and spends countless hours arranging these shoots and setting this stuff up.
I’ll fork up the cash, SenshiStock. You’re worth it.
Check out this amazing woman’s stuff, and get knowledged: https://www.deviantart.com/senshistock
Interrupting my regular Star Wars BS to reblog this because @senshistock is amazing and beyond worth the follow and support! I first started using her refs gosh I want to say back in maybe 2008, and I’m happy to be a supporter of her over on Patreon. If you’re an artist please go find her stuff on all the platforms, you will not regret it!
Yessss, she is so awesome! Been following her for years. My favorite stock artist is jademacalla, who is, incidentally, in the last two images above. He has a lot of great angles, costumes, gear, etc! I love his hands, too.
Just so everyone knows, she recently stopped using the name SenshiStock and switched to AdorkaStock! All her links and socials have switched to that. Also she has a TikTok of her doing the poses live, which is stupid useful because you can pause it at any point in the pose for just the right reference.
Also a reminder that Adorkastock Sketch exists, which is essentially timed poses to draw (including a class mode, that replicates a life drawing session), which you can even filter to focus on what you need to work on.
Hello, fellow rare-pair enthusiasts! If you want to join us for this year’s exchange, time is running out. Sign-ups close at 8 PM EDT on July 16th, which is just about 48 hours away.
You can join the fun by signing up here. You can also find a summary of current requests and offers here and a list of nominated pairings here.

“Everyone’s accounted for.” Bull folds the note distractedly, half-crumpling the scrap of parchment as he does so and places it on Cullen’s desk. “They’re inbound, three days out.”
“That’s good news,” Cullen offers quietly. He means it, but he’s down to the dregs, and there’s no spare thread of energy for enthusiasm. The Chargers have been running interference for the convoys returning from the Arbor Wilds, and bands of Red Templars are still on the road. But he’s been writing reports for the reserve units since daybreak, and the Inquisitor has brought notes on Samson’s questioning, and he can’t recall his last meal except that it was handed to him over a cookfire tended by a chevalier and one of those unsettling elf scouts. It’s been a challenging week, to say the least. And Bull…
Bull has been struggling.
Cullen knew when he reached Skyhold, after that single horrific night of crawling dread before the raven had arrived, and the hell-bent five days’ ride that followed. Bull had been waiting for him on the bridge, crushing Cullen to breathlessness in his arms right there in the crowded gatehouse, as though -he’d- been the one briefly presumed dead.
Bull had been rough with him that night, almost…distracted, single-minded in his need to touch and grasp as if he’d have crawled inside Cullen if he could.
“I’ll want the Chargers garrisoned here until further notice,” Cullen continues, mildly. “Wherever the Elder One makes his stand, we’ll need level-headed men defending this place.”
“Yeah.” Bull is at the bookcase, pushing the spines of each volume until they’re flush with the wall, one by one. His hand drops, and his fingertips catch the edge of the shelf with a soft, heavy sound. “Hey, kadan…” He pauses, swallows audibly. “You remember, in Emprise…” Cullen hlances up, but Bull shakes his head in punctuation. “Nah. It’s stupid.” His fingernails bite into the bookshelf. “I’m stupid. Forget it.”
Cullen remembers many things about that trip, most of them unpleasant. He forces a smile, picking up his penknife to sharpen a quill. “If you’re fishing for compliments about three dragons in one week, you’re going about it all—“
“—Fuck’s sake, Cullen.”
“I beg your pardon? Cullen blinks, too surprised to be annoyed, raising his eyebrows as the knife and quill hover.
“Now’s the time for you to grow a sense of humor. Shitting forbid I’m the one for a change wh…” Bull rounds on him with a hot glare, then stutters into silence. His expression wavers after a moment, brow pulling into something softer, sadder, and he looks away with a frustrated sound. “Damn it.”
Cullen pushes back from his desk, chest feeling hollow. “Bull…”
“I’m sorry…” Bull digs the heels of his hands into his temples, gripping the base of his horns as he swivels away. “I…you know I haven’t slept.”
“Mm. I did notice.”
“I keep…thinking about that fucking mirror. And the witch wants us to go through ANOTHER one tomorrow—“
“You don’t have to, Bull. Let one of the others—“
“You think I’m letting the Boss out of my sight for one hot second?”
Cullen catches up with him at the ladder. “No. No, of course not…” The qunari’s skin is never as cold as it looks, but Cullen can’t help himself from placing a palm on his hunched shoulder and rubbing softly. “I understand.”
“Fucking demons, with agendas! And now fucking elf magic mirrors and fuck knows what else out there. If Corypheus was pissed before he’s shitting goddamn fire now, and my boys are on the road, and….” He swallows audibly, shuddering under Cullen’s hand.
“Bull, here,” Cullen mumurs, turning him from the ladder and reaching for his hands. “It’s going to be all right. We’ve all been through too much in a short time, and—you’re tired, Bull. All of this will seem less after you’ve rested.”
Bull sighed, and Cullen is jarred by the waver in it. “Every time I close my eyes I see a mirror, a rift, and then the Fade, what it was -like- and…I don’t know what that means…” He bows his head, pulling his hands free of Cullen’s only to hold them awkwardly in front of him. “Is this it? Am I finally losing it?”
Cullen can feel his face drain and his heart thuds hard against his breastbone. “Oh…Bull…” He reaches for Bull’s face, feeling the tightness of his jaw inder his fingertips. “No, love. No.” Cullen aches urgently to kiss him, to hold him, to banish the twisted wreck of memory plaguing his lover. “I told you, I will -always- keep you here.”
Bull turns. Just a little, and slides his lips against Cullen’s palm. “Will you do it now?”
They’ve only done this a few times. The last, after the demon Imshael had left Bull second-guessing every face he recognized.
Bull has old ropes. The first he’d ever shown Cullen. Red dye faded, and overstretched. It’s all right for this. In Bull’s dark room — their room — Cullen carefully constructs the tie Bull showed him long ago, back when they were beginning. The simple, elementary two-column tie is loose enough that it could be slipped with moderate effort. But that’s all right, too.
For every time Bull has sunk to his knees on the piled blankets at the foot of the bed, bound arms settled atound Cullen’s waist, Cullen can think of ten times he’s been the one willing himself to Bull’s ropes. The soft, almost pained sound Bull makes as Cullen slides his eyepatch away reminds him this is not the same. As if Cullen needs the reminder.
There’s always an instant whenever he cradles Bull’s head that he feels like he’s gentling some great beast, a massive and terrifying creature. But then it’s only Bull, his good eye pressed shut into in the crook of Cullen’s arm. The ropes hook at his hip as Bull tests them, the movement pressing him further between Cullen’s knees.
“There now….” Cullen curves a hand around the side of Bull’s neck, thumb stroking across this thundering pulse, and Bull murmurs something that might be Qunlat, but it’s too muffled to make out. “Hush, love. Its time to be still.”
And Bull is. Cullen can feel the man’s bulk begin to lean more heavily as Cullen strokes his shoulder, his neck, softly trails fingers across his cheekbone as he whispers soft, silly things. Endearments unbefitting of a general or a giant. He rubs the path of the eyepatch strap under his ear, the callused points on his brow where the boiled leather has rubbed the scars. And when Bull’s shoulders stiffen and he burrows closer, Cullen begins to scratch the base of his horns and hum the first Chantry hymn that comes to mind because he knows no Tamassran ever did that.
An ache begins to glow between his shoulders after a while perched on the edge of the bed. He is exhausted himself, and there is still so much to do. But Bull’s breathing is a slow, even heat blooming through the fabric of his shirt where his face rests. Every few minutes his arms flex, the faintest strain like high branches, then his hands curl softly and he is quiet again. And so Cullen continues to hold Bull there, however long it takes to bring him back to himself. To bring Bull back to him.
