Imagine, if you will, that you've been down on your luck. You got fired from a job you loved a few years ago when the company dissolved and you burned some bridges on your way out. Okay so you burned a lot of bridges. Okay so you told the higher ups at the parent company that their new business direction was idiotic and they should go to hell.
Since then you've been living with your best friend, who's just barely rich enough to not have to work, and traveling around doing odd jobs with your buddy who lives out of her RV and a couple other friends. And that sort-of pays the rent, but doesn't really pay off your credit card debt.
Then your absentee mother calls you up and is like "Hey, I want you to look into this guy who was working for the family business and disappeared. If you do I'll pay off your credit cards." And you kind of hate your mother, but you know she's good for the money, so you agree.
So you look into this guy and find out that he was doing some shady stuff with experimental physics and either was kidnapped about it or noped off to California to sell whatever he was doing to the highest bidder. So it looks like you and your friends are going to California.
But before you can do that, some rich guy accuses your roommate of some petty crime which he swears he didn't do but is also totally on brand for him. So before you can get on the road you have to go to small claims court and hope your roommate doesn't get thrown in jail.
Neither you or your friend can afford a lawyer, so you end up representing your roommate in court by virtue of being the only one of the two of you who's ever been employed. This is doubly unfortunate because you kind of don't believe your friend is innocent.
So you show up at court and the guy suing your friend comes over and is like, "Hey man, I know I'm suing you and all but I just wanted to say that I heard your father died and that really sucks. I'm sorry about that." And your friend is like, "My father what now?"
So since the other guy seems sympathetic, you try to persuade him to drop the case, but the prosecuting lawyer just keeps aggressively pushing for life in prison, even when his client is like "That seems a bit extreme."
Eventually you manage to settle the case with a small fine and the opposing lawyer is apparently so enraged by this that he pulls out a gun, murders his client, murders the judge, and is aiming for you and your friend when you jump out the window and hightail it across town.
Not to be deterred this guy (who you're beginning to suspect might not actually be a lawyer) chases you all the way across town where you just barely manage to meet up with your other traveling companions and make a getaway in your friend's RV.
Unfortunately, the RV was damaged in the shootout, and double unfortunately, your friend's sister has done so much monkeying around with the insides of this RV that a mechanic doesn't have a prayer of figuring out how to fix this thing, never mind a bunch of randos stranded on the side of the road. Triple unfortunately, you discover this while stranded in the middle of nowhere in a blizzard.
Miraculously your roommate knows just enough about mechanics for you to scratch your way to some church out on the edges of a one stop sign town. However before you can ask for help you notice that this church is under attack by some sort of masked militia??? So you help scare off the attackers and find out that the only people at this church are like two monks, a visiting cardinal, and a secret service agent he brought along with him who just so happens to be your godfather.
So you ask what that was all about and the cardinal's like "Idk, they were here a couple days ago, murdered a bunch of townsfolk and set fire to the whole place. It probably has something to do with these books we found in the basement on creating a nuclear bomb 2.0."
And at this point your roommate starts to sweat nervously because apparently when he was in college he did his whole thesis on nuclear power 2.0 and then just never published it or did anything with it.
But it turns out this cardinal is also going to Silicon Valley so you get him to give you a tow, and the entire ride there your kind of afraid the Secret Service agent is going to disappear your friend for knowing too much, but it turns out he's too busy lecturing you on how you should be nicer to your absentee mother for the entire trip.
So you finally get to California and find someone to repair the RV, and can start looking for that guy your mom sent you after. But your roommate's like "Hey, so since my father apparently just died, I should probably like, call my mom, and make funeral arrangements and stuff." And being a good friend your like "Sure buddy. Whatever you need. I'm here for you." And after an emotionally taxing morning the two of you decide to get lunch. So you walk into some random cafe and there, sitting at one of the tables, eating a sandwich, is the lawyer who tried to kill you???? Like, how do you even respond to that?
