Ok my ideal giant meandering fixit for all the sw Tragedies as a not!fic:
- 'jedi can't have relationships' is actually they can't have a *traditional* relationship (with a non-jedi imo) bc to do so they would have to go live with their spouse(s), which would mean they wouldn't be living in a jedi temple and most likely would end up not going on missions or doing other jedi things, bc attachment is fear of losing things and people. Probably jedi could be in relationships together bc they already live together generally.
-- Probably wouldn't be allowed to go on missions together to prevent attachment which is actually the sort of fearful, possessive, and potentially violent protective behaviors that can happen when your loved one may be hurt in front of you. Jedi have to be able to focus on their mission, on the force, on other fellow jedi with them, etc.
..Hm on the other hand, a padawan and their teacher will also form a bond of love and affection, which can also have the same affect of becoming dangerous attachment rather than simply love and connection, and they are still obviously allowed on missions together. But maybe they don't until the padawan is older and more settled? Idk. Perhaps it isn't a hard line just a general recommendation. Particularly if one jedi in a romantic (or qp) relationship with another jedi has already displayed some of that concerning behavior they would not be allowed to join on the same missions, but otherwise it's okay?
-- jedi cannot be marry/become entangled with a ruler of a planet/system/etc, because jedi need to be impartial (or seen as such) and able to act for all people not only their loved one's system/planet. Long distance less entangled relationships are in a grey area, but it was decided that making it against the code hardline could lead to jedi lying/hiding a relationship and becoming fearful or developing other negative feelings about the jedi code and order and the council, leading jedi to the dark side. It's a grey area, they don't need to hide or lie abt it, but they are told if they want it to become more serious they would end up leaving the jedi. NOT because they are rejected or kicked out or anything, but because they would not be functionally able to live with a foot in both worlds (ahem, stealing from warrior cats lolll).
- also jedi masters are masters of their craft basically, but I'm deciding they most commonly use a word in their own language that equates more to 'teacher' (maybe I'll steal from Hebrew and call them Rebbe bc i can? Lol) particularly padawans with their 'master' use the word that means teacher instead more often than not.
-- I like this idea from a fic where anakin makes peace with using the term master for his teacher(s) and other jedi because they do not act like a slave master in any way shape or form, like he can separate the two useages of this word because it onvs doesnt hold the same meaning in practice Or intention. (Basically, it means they mastered the jedi way of life and skill/craft, and/or are qualified to instruct formally; jedi knights are a category and which includes teachers/instructors as well, both of individual padawans and like creche/youngling/initiate class instructors).
- love is not against the code, connection to others is important, love, affection, etc are very important to the jedi. Many jedi start as younglings/ are brought up in the creche bc non-force-sensitive parents of force sensitive children sometimes...struggle with or struggle to understand them, and/or feel the jedi are more capable of taking care of them and/or these communities near jedi temples have a tradition where having a child be force sensitive and be accepted into the jedi order is like socially an honor? Some jedi younglings and jedi in general know their families, some may not, it depends.
- shmi Should have been rescued/freed by the jedi sooner. and preferably taken away from tattooine but if she would want to stay on the planet (seems unfsir to deny her the relationship she does get to have, but the risk of her being captured and killed by the sand people remains...) anyway if she stayed then she should have been able to be in contact anakin and vidcall any time either of them wanted to.
I think a) him knowing his mon is free rather than not knowing whats happening with her and being afraid for and worried about her would help settle him considerably, and b) his mother being in contact at least if not living close enough for visits, would also actually help anakin. I think he would actually be much LESS dangerously-attached to her in those circumstances, rather than more.
- I would have qui-gon survive/live to at least help guide obi wan and anakin, if not be anakin's teacher and him his padawan. Read a fic where qui-gon is badly injured but survives, obi wan teaches anakin, but qui gon living helps support the young obi wan and anakin, which makes all the difference.
-padme doesn't die
-- BUT I still want leia to know the organas as her parents. So... Maybe Darth sidious doesn't manage to bring anakin to the dark side, and padme doesn't die, BUT the kiddos are in danger from Sidious, who disappeared and is out there still, maybe the Republic still falls actually and Palpatine still becomes Emperor, but as he doesn't have an apprentice he is always searching for anakin and potentially the Skywalker child - he doesn't know there are two. So, leia still goes to the organa family, which makes padme very sad but it will keep the girl safe while padme and anakin and other surviving jedi work to fight the emperor (im borrowing from a story, anakin actually saved as many younglings and jedi in the temple from order 66 as he could, since he doesn't Fall in this AU!)
--Luke doesn't go with leia because he's too obviously anakin's son, he doesn't look like the organas, and keeping both twins in the same place and so close under palpatine's nose would endanger them. So Luke still goes to tattooine- with obi wan as his protector, as per canon. In this au where anakin (and padme) live, obi wan doesn't have to tell Luke his father is 'dead'.. not sure what he does exactly tell him.
-- hm maybe shmi doesn't die? Because she's in contact with anakin and thus obi wan and qui-gon, they hear from her expanded family on tattooine immediately after she gets kidnapped, and the jedi maybe are in the are for some reason bc why not, I can do what I want, anyway so they're close enough to come to the rescue and save her, Before anything can happen to her!
She is rattled, scared, but OKAY, safe and alive and well. Anakin is shaken, but actually being able to see/help her be rescued by those he trusts and loves reinforces that the jedi is where he belongs and that she will be ok and safe? He does get very angry at the sand people but qui gon manages to rein him in and remind him of their focus, shmi, and her safety as tantamount.
The raid and rescue, which maybe does result in the leader and second in command so to speak being killed by enraged anakin before hes pulled away, do actually dissuade the sand people from attacking again, and the group of nomads are spooked and move off somewhere else. So anakin is OK leaving, even if he does hug his mom for like 100 years.
-- anyway SO this to say, when Luke is brought to tattooine, shmi is still alive to help raise him, she does eventually pass away of old age bc that's life, but Luke grows and is a happy child and anakin does get sent photos and such by 'ben' kenobi guardian to the boy (and also shmi and co for a time). Perhaps he doesn't go by Skywalker in general though, he is TOLD that that's his last name, but in school and such he goes by his extended family's surname, Whitesun (I think?). Which is an extra layer of protection. He still likes the name Skywalker tho and thinks of himself with that name lol
- so while Luke and leia are growing up in their respective homes, anakin and padme along with other jedi and others, are forming the Rebellion, and running around doing what they can where they can while also hiding from/avoiding Palpatine. Anakin shields his presence in the force so he's only detectable at close range, he'd be found if he was very close to Palpatine, but he avoids that.
Events of the og trilogy mostly happen? Except ehh alderaan isnt destroyed bc there's been more delays on the death star than in canon without Vader. Leia is captured by the emperor isn't on the ship, tarkin is still dangerous, anyway. Luke and han and Co do come to the rescue and get into hijinks.
Uhm things happen similarly to canon but with obvs differences....
When it comes to the final battle with the emperor, it is Anakin, Luke And Leia who face him, together. Palpatine still almost wins, but Leia attacks while Luke is down, and then Anakin's love for his children still leads him to push through the attacks by and power of the emperor and still lifts the man up and chucks him down the pipe.
Then they all holding onto each other for support, go hurry to where that pipe leads to, and find the injured emperor at the bottom, and they kill him 100% for good. They burn his body, too, to be sure. (The jedi learned that sith can somehow survive deadly wounds, so.) Uhm or maybe anakin is badly injured by the emperor's powers doing so and dies too? And Luke and leia go and finish off the emperor? Idk.
Or maybe- while the emperor attacks Luke who writes in pain on the ground, anakin attacks the emperor from the side, distracting him for a moment- which is when Leia comes out of left field and kills Palpatine with her lightsaber. (Or Luke's, if she doesn't have one yet of her own). Then they light the body on fire so he can't come back from the dead ever, and skedaddle together to safety, where they reunite with padme and han and chewie and co. (I'm just imagining han and padme interacting ok and it would be absolutely hilarious!!) And the galaxy is saved, the jedi survive, and the extended family are all together and alive and happy. The end. ...?
... ok
Ben solo is led astray by a new sith in the future and Luke is misled by fear (also the dark side) to not trust his nephew, which worsens things, but the other jedi kids aren't killed or captured/misled by Ben. Luke still runs away but to hide the younglings and warn the other jedi and leia and co. Later ben almost kills han, but stops/is stopped, and dragged home, where leia and co work to undo the programming from the sith who's whispered to the kid for years and years.
Also rey is Ben's younger sister who was taken by pirates from han's ship while they were out, and then she was rescued by some other pirates who didn't know who she was so they left her on jakku, they planned to try and find out, they figured she would be safer on a planet than on their ship, which is true bc the other pirates then attack their ship and destroy it. They never did get back to the millennium falcon before being killed.
So han doesn't know where rey is, which starts a split btwn him and leia bc he feels guilty, and that doesn't help with Ben's situation bc he's all primed to be resentful and angry and hurt turns to hate, and then Ben's Fall has han all messed up, and it takes until rey and han meet - neither of them aware they are family!! - for han to come back to leia for more than a quick pop in and out, he was out searching for his son and his daughter all those years, but also hiding in his shame - but leia never blamed him, and has been mourning losing her family, tho she knows Luke is alive, he didn't tell her where he went so ben can't find out from her.
Anyway so han and leia kiss and hug and make up. Then ben nearly kills han, is stopped by han or by rey. Also Finn is also going to train as a jedi 100%. But it is important to mirror that anakin's love for Luke brings him back to the light with the family connections saving Ben.
Anyway so they forcibly drag Ben back and start trying to help him. Rey goes to find Luke to bring him back? Finn and poe and co fight the new galactic empire which is weakened by losing Ben but there's still a sith out there. Rey brings Luke back and with him comes other jedi (not all, and any current younglings and some of the knights Ben's age stay behind) who agree to train Rey and Finn. Finn/poe is a thing of course. I'm just gonna ship rey/rose now for fun too.
Rey and Finn and other jedi go to fight the new sith lord, Ben is not supposed to join them bc he's still susceptible to snoke's influence and power and also still recovering (you can go back to the Light after Falling without dying, but the physical process takes a lot out of someone), but he does, and he ends up either pretending to be under snake's influence again or actually is maybe half caught by his web.
Snoke knows Rey is Ben's sister, reveals this as a taunt. Ben and rey stop fighting each other bc wait WHAT - snoke goes uh oh- he miscalculated the solo/Skywalker family connection and strength mwahahaha, as all sith do! And then Finn is the one who ends snoke with lightsaber while the sith is distracted. They also burn snoke's body afterwards just in case. And meanwhile leia and poe and company have stopped/defeated the new empire's armies and won.
And then they all go home and Rey and Ben and leia and han, and Luke, and Finn and poe and rose, (and padme and anakin if they're still hanging around at this pt, they might have retired together to some backwater planetary system in their old age, but maybe the skywalker-solo clan and friends reach out and they come to visit and be together and celebrate.)
And then the hard work of setting up a republic starts again. Mostly it didn't fall apart as badly as it did the first time, systems and planets are happy to join again and work out some bugs in the system. There are more jedi and more training on noticing sith influence.
Ben puts down his lightsaber and decides he doesn't want to be an active jedi anymore, he doesn't quite trust himself. Rey suggests he train again, but he's unsure. He doesn't trust himself around the other jedi, particularly the children, because he remembers attempting to kill his fellow younglings/padawon learners at the time. But he knows fear is the power of the dark side. Maybe he can relearn to trust the force. He spends time with Luke and with his mother and father and with Rey, just... being part of a family and feeling their love.
Finn took poe's last name temporarily for something and then poe is like why not make it official all sly flirty and so they get married. Rose and Rey are semi-casually dating. Finn and Rey train as jedi. Rose gets along w Ben actually, she teaches him engineering and ship maintenance stuff that he never wanted to learn from han bc of dark side influence making him resentful, and/or bc han was away looking for Rey when he would have maybe, or both.
The end, I averted the Tragedies TM by sheer force of wanting a fixit that stays believable, doesn't bash the jedi, reinterprets the code and changes things to fix stuff, and keeping as many themes and big moments and also improving the sequels trilogy. No Palpatine returns, he's ded as a dead thing can be.
