We have two cats we adopted two years ago out of a feral litter in the yard [no idea where the others went :(]

We got them around 8 weeks old, with no human contact before. They don't seem to meow very much (our previous cat was a howler monkey), but communicate mostly with "purrtles."

The question: is the purrtle thing maybe because they weren't around big dumb humans that needed louder noises, or is it just a personality thing?

I'm assuming by "purrtles" you mean the kind of chirrup cats do, which cats use to greet other cats. We're still learning a lot about why cats meow, but one interesting thing to note is that cats seldom meow at other cats—this vocalization is typically directed towards humans! Additionally, how cats communicate with their humans is person-specific, meaning they learn what works for each person. For example, my former kitty Starbucks was very chatty with me (I have an terrible habit of creating chatty cats), but seldom chatty with my ex-husband (who, while showering our kitties with just as much love, was not as apt to reward a pleading meow as I was).

So my best guess is that your kitties didn't have any experience with meowing, since again usually a human-directed vocalization. I would have no doubt personality plays into it, too! Mia was under-socialized to people when I got her at 1 year old, and although she was shy and quiet at first, she's now the most vocal cat I've ever had!

Tldr: your kitties probably never learned the power of their meow! :3

It is probably a symptom of having a dissociative disorder but I hate stories where the magic leaves at the end, especially when it’s symbolic of growing up. I don’t want to go back to the real world. I already have to live in it. I hate stories that offer these beautiful magical escapes and then at the very end snatch them away with a smack that says “look how silly you are for wanting magic to be real. Grownups don’t think magic is real.” Like shut up!!!! Grownups think they’re sooooo clever for putting in “symbols” about how imagination is incompatible with adulthood. Shut up shut up shut up!!!!!! I will never stop dreaming, and you’ll never make me. I vowed that I would never write a story where the magic goes away. I never want to tell a small child reading my stories they’re not allowed to live there anymore.
