Scottish. I write and draw and usually post the former, and sometimes the latter. I mostly talk about Doctor Who; ask me about Skip Haverty or Li Shou Yuing. I'm on AO3 under DragonsAreEpic.
Felt it was about time I got round to doing one of these.
Personal Information:
- Scottish, and I'll be patriotic about this until we inevitably lose our chances at the world cup.
- Online, I go by 'Dragon', as the obvious shortening of my username.
- I'm very private, and as such reluctant to share any information about my gender or the pronouns I use. In the face of this, my online friends have defaulted to using 'they/them' for me, which I'm fine with.
- I write.
Fandoms:
- Doctor Who (the vast majority of my fandomposting)
- Torchwood
- Interview with the Vampire
- Six Idiots and related shows
- Baldur's Gate III
Interests:
- Linguistics/conlanging (but only casually; check out my series 'Asár (Assar)' on AO3 for my Doctor Who conlang Assarian)
- Gaming
- Art
- Writing, mostly fanfiction
- Reading
Miscellaneous:
- I'm on AO3 as DragonsAreEpic, where I post mostly Doctor Who fics.
- I reblog and post all sorts on here. Originally it was mostly fandom (mostly Doctor Who) but I'm branching out a little.
- My OTP is Ace Yuing (Ace McShane/Li Shou Yuing).
Brief review of DOSHENTA (aka one of the only three dw comics featuring skip haverty)
Some spoilers ahead!
The official synopsis:
Warned about a troop of aliens who seek to catalog all species and extinguish those who don't fit into the taxonomy, the Eight Doctor lands on the planet Ipperin IV to try and find his friend and protect her from this great evil. He, however, arrives a little too early.
Doshenta shows a teenage Skip, six years prior to meeting the doctor, in the midst of an identity crisis and general insecurity about her body and herself. The doctor sticks around Skip and tries to hide the looming threat to her existence from her, while fighting the.. (*sighs in exhaustion*) the Glorbies (late referred in the comic as the Blorbies ? for some reason?). These are the aliens obsessed with taxonomy, lovers of a neat and tidy spreadsheet of alien species, haters of every individual who doesn't fit into the neat and tidy spreadsheet. A little heavy handed right?
Doshenta shows the prospect of diving really deep into Skip's insecurities about her hybridism, gender and sexuality, as well as social and political aspects of the human's and doshenta's coexisting on Ipperin IV, themes that are already hinted in her early audios. I'd say for the first half of the comic, it does a very good job of exploring those themes. The art is beautiful, the dialogue is good, the plot is compelling.
And then in the second half..... I don't know what the fuck happened there. Progressively it seemed like everyone on the team lost its passion for the project, the illustrations start to become lazy and unflattering, the story gets increasingly more confusing, and DON'T GET ME STARTED ON THE FUCKING GLORBIES. A classic Doctor Who tradition of ruining perfectly alright aliens or villains.
But ignoring the Glorbies and the general ending for a bit, Doshenta is a really good start if you like Skip Haverty and want to know more about her context and backstory, her familial issues and relationship with the people of her world. In the audios we basically only see her interacting with humans, so it's really interesting to see her with (and compared to) the doshenta people.
The doshenta species also gets a very different design on this comic story, as you might have noticed on the cover. Noticeably, they are big and resemble more a mermaid than a person per se. I'd guess it's the same issue the Doctor Who team had with choosing about Skip's design, so they just went for a bunch of different stuff.
Overall, I liked the story!! I've read very few dw comics, but I could not pass on the opportunity to see my beloved Skip illustrated. I guess I'd give it a 8/10, but only if you stop reading it halfway through lol. If I consider the entire comic, the grade lowers considerably. Just drop the story when you finish the fish ring part and you're good! You're in for a fun trip :)
speaking of doctor who and stuff feeling tactile, i really miss how very early in the show the psychic translation of alien text is obviously compensating for fonts not meant for english
this is a website full of SINNERS, SICKOS, and HOMOS!!!!!
So tell me .... what sins of the past still haunt you?
Did you do hamilton discourse? Become the most popular jonas brothers rpf writer on AO3 when you were 13? Did you make a fake post on tumblr about owning the homophobes? Did you spend 2 years roleplaying as a middle aged mom who writes letters to serial killers in the true crime community before eventually deleting the 10,000 follower blog in shame? Did you do hamilton discourse?
Father Strange is here to offer a comforting ear and absolve you of your guilt. You many now unburden yourself anonymously in my inbox.
Clarification: The sins need not take place on tumblr so as long as they feel sort of tumblr-y. Anything fandom/fanfic related definitely works. writing fake stories on reddit would work. The twitter discourse trenches would work. Sometimes tumblr is a state of mind, u know?
I don't think dr who is getting cancelled but you have to admit generating hype for an announcement only to say "we're pulling the plug" would be kind of hilarious
