An old piece I picked up again after a few years. Made it loads deeper for a better shape and made the head much more dragoney. Within a few months I sold it to a friend who imports jewelry and cuts green river jade pieces, she now sits guarding a horde!
“So I got asked to make three pendants for a local family, our kids all go to the same school. They’re reading a book all together and so they wanted A Dragon, A Wolf and A Triskele to play their characters. They all looked pleased as punch when they got them. Mum bounced this to me on facebook“ Yes they are so delighted ... they have hours of creative play based around their stone 'talismans' as they call them ...thank you” Cool! nice to be appreciated.

Big pieces! At the top a friendly passing pirate agreed to model my ‘Golden mean interlocking spiral vortex’ at Boomtown Fair. Below are pics from my trip to the quarry, in the amazing landscape of North Wales where even 20foot beams may be made of slate. I didn’t get as many pictures of the stages of production (as always I get my head down and can’t stop. The second, more organic piece, is based on nasturtiums. I carried on working on it at Boomtown as I had been invited to do some carving in situ as well as display. The final shot is a bit grainy as it was taken at night but gives you an idea of the view we had over the rest of the festival. Oh and don’t forget the awesome ‘roving stone chainsaw’ that helped us with the installation.
Here is the first big figure I carved. I started doing them like this with ‘half heads’ as it better allowed me to keep the natural shape of the stone and not impose too much with my plans. I had some good luck with this piece as when I did the final polish a line of fools gold revealed itself running through the eye. I called this piece ‘Pilgrim’ and it lead to series of pilgrim pieces some of which will be up soon.
So I decided to chop down an old hatchet head I’ve had for few years and have a go at making a little bearded axe as I got into axe throwing with the Avalon Axes crew a couple of years ago. Got to remember not to stand on the bits of metal once I’ve chopped them off as I’ve now got several extra big grips in the soles of me new boots! Was really keen to get a haft on it quick so I grabbed the first bit of pine baton I came across and started whittling with the head fitted. I don’t think the handle will stand up to any serious abuse - like being thrown at logs but it was nice to have a practice whittling the forms with a soft wood. There was a knot towards the grip end (which apart from anything else was a bugger to get through) A few sketched lines and I decided that ending there would make it a bit short. Then I had thoughts of it being the eye of a dragon’s head and in whittling the snout I ended up with two grips. I thought it might be just a bit of a gimmick but I find the shape quite pleasing and the options quite useful. I’ve a nice bit of laburnum sitting around that I think I’ll use as the final handle once I’ve had a play with (and probably broken) this one.
Triptic Mushroom Head. I love making pieces like this that morph from one face to another. This was one of my favourites, It didn’t get exhibited for years as it was a bit fragile but I eventually made a great base for it. Sadly that same day it was stolen from an exhibition - i did get a modest insurance payout but wished I’d just left it in the box. I suppose it was a kind of flattery someone risked their liberty for it!
Here is one of the pieces I’m working on at the moment. It is a commissioned piece to go in a back garden to remember the client’s grandparents. It is on a section of reclaimed snooker table and features a spiral of four phrases her grandparents were known for as well as magnolia flowers which filled their garden. I have cut out the magnolias outline and used several piercing to release the flowers from the stone allowing to get a more 3d effect from an otherwise very flat piece. It is due to be installed at Easter so more pics will follow. (the last shot was from a frosty morning)
