Experiments are currently underway to determine if it can also be effective for broader conditions such as depression, addiction, and dementia.

Research Suggests GBM Tumors Should be Treated Based on Complexity

The study was completed by the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) and focused on glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) tumors. These types of tumors are the deadliest and most common type of glial tumors and are considered to be extremely difficult to treat due to their aggressive and invasive nature. Scientists have struggled to find a weak spot of GBM tumors to target with advanced therapies. Researchers at TGen studied 18 GBM tumors from deceased patients who had received standard-of-care treatment. Of those 18 tumors, 10 patients had lived unusually long and eight had died unusually soon. On average, the survival for GBM patients in 14.7 months, but these two study groups survived an average of 33 months and seven months, respectively. These tumors were examined for unique features that may have predicted patient outcomes. Researchers found that the tumors that had fewer genetic events – and were thus simpler – did not respond as well to standard treatment. Conversely, tumors that were more genetically complicated responded very well.

The most common subtype of resective surgery performed is temporal lobectomy, where a portion of the brain's temporal lobe is removed. The less common type of epilepsy surgery involves interrupting the neural pathways that transmit the electrical signals that trigger seizures. A common instance of this surgery is the cutting of the corpus callosum, a part of the brain that connects the two brain hemispheres. Unlike resective surgery, this type of surgery is not known to be curative but instead provides relief.
