              “Fantastic—” The word came out, lead by a deep sigh trailing off her soft lips as she glanced up and down the street. It was obvious she was looking for something gone missing, subtle annoyance slowly bubbling up inside her. Dark eyes landed on a silhouette, some meters ahead of her. “You didn’t happen to come across a white cat with blue eyes and a brown collar?”

Taking a two year old out for a walk was difficult enough with a stroller, but without one it seemed almost impossible. They had only made it a few minutes down the street before Heather had wobbled off in the direction of a cat and plonked herself down, somewhat clumsily, a few meters from it. Stopping as he watched Heather try to entice the cat over to her, he knelt down at the side of the grass to make sure the animal didn’t swipe out at her. “Be careful—” He said quietly as the cat approached, almost reaching her hand as a woman’s voice startled it. Heather’s face fell as the cat ran off in the opposite direction, letting out a small cry a few seconds after. “Just a black one that went that way, sorry...” Standing up, he lifted Heather off the ground and kissed her forehead as she sobbed lightly into him. “Where did you last see it?”

Elise couldn’t remember the last time she’d slept. Ever since the outbreak–an event that was well over and done with, at least to the public’s eye–she’d been buried deep under paperwork. The city had experienced its only little taste of the apocalypse and, as expected, petty theft and crime had skyrocketed. She wasn’t one to normally thumb through the cases, but the precinct needed help and they’d someone ended up on her desk. Letting out a stiff yawn, she arched back in the somewhat comfortable cafe chair, only to have one of her legs bump the side leg, sending a jolt through the object. Her coffee titled on the end and she watched as if tipped just enough to fall off–the cup smashing into the floor with a wet thud, hot coffee spilling across the floor. “Shit,” she muttered, French accent flowing strong through her irritation.

Daniel could see the accident before it happened, watching as Heather tottered around the chair babbling to herself. Putting his coffee down, he interrupted her gargling session by lifting her from the ground just as the woman knocked the cup off the table and onto the spot his two year old had just been stood. “Oops—” He said towards Heather, but also the woman as he took some napkins from the table. “It’s okay, everyone survived.” Heather stuck a thumb in her mouth as he soaked up some of the coffee, giving the woman a smile. “Busy day?” He asked, nodding towards the papers on the table.

Lucas flipped through a baby name book, his eyebrows lifting every now and again as he read some of the more unusual ones. “Frooti? Isn’t that a type of cereal? –would anyone actually name their child Bobo?”

“Given that the mother of my daughter tried to convince me that ‘Bay’ should be her name... So, yes, I’m pretty sure that without guidance and a few disagreements, someone would name their child Bobo.”

“Don’t judge?” Daniel said, lifting his eyes up to Druella. “Scrubs are boring, right?” He chuckled, sitting up straight. “You look lovely, what’s the occasion?”

‘Ms Dubois, how are you feeling about the upcoming trial?’ ‘Is it true that Theo’s struggling in school?’ ‘When he’s older, do you think you’ll tell your son about his real father?’ Cosette kept walking, ignoring the journalists and presenters outside the house as she kept Theo in her arms, his face hidden from the cameras. News around the abduction had slowed down for a while, but as the trial date against her captor drew nearer it had started up again. At the last question, Cosette found herself snapping. “Theo’s not his. He’s nobody’s but mine.” Reaching her car, she placed the child in the car seat and sat at the wheel. She couldn’t remember where she was going now, and so just sat there for a moment, allowing the anger boiling in her to settle. At the sound of a small tap at the window, she rolled it down, fully prepared to meet eyes with a media publicist. 

Daniel felt obliged to help as he saw the woman and a boy he assumed was her son taunted by the press. While he had never been the subject of such attention, he felt a duty of care towards children and if his daughter was part of something like that, Daniel would end it as quickly as he could. He followed the crowd and tried to push his way through, making sure the woman got somewhere safe and darted towards her car as the paparazzi stood on the side. Leaning down, he tapped on her window and spoke up. “Are you okay?” He asked, knowing the answer was obvious. “— Stupid question. Look, my place is two streets over if you need somewhere to hide for a bit. My daughter is going to be dropped off soon so I can’t stay here too long, but I’m happy to meet you there if you would like.”

“So, then the man says, ‘That’s not a duck! That’s my wife!” At the punchline, Tatum sighed. “Listen, I never said I was a comedian, I said I knew a joke. It’s not my fault it wasn’t funny. Now can we actually get down to business or what?”

“Not going to lie to you, Tatum—” Dan said with a smile. “I still don’t understand it. I’m sure it’s funny to someone... Yes, of course. I’ve got an hour before Heather is dropped at mine, so let’s get down to it.”

“I probably am on the continent this season,” he notes to himself. “I wouldn’t want to wear sweaters for nine months. Any recommendations for vacations in Europe then?”

“It depends on what kind of vacation you’re looking for— Italy is my favourite country in Europe, specifically the Amalfi coast. Perhaps Capri if it’s the right time of year. Otherwise Switzerland is a beautiful country, Croatia and Hungary too.”

“Tomorrow is Sienna’s seventh birthday and the only thing she told me she wanted was a little sister or brother.” Layne chuckled slightly, running a hand through her hair. “I’ve been thinking about it quite a bit, but I don’t know if it’s the right time or just too late.” She said, now looking down at her lap nervously. “What do you think?”

“She’s going to be seven already?” Dan asked with a small smile, thinking of his own daughter. “They grow up so quickly… Too quickly—” He chuckled. “What you on about, too late? Come on, you’re making out as if you’re heading into your forties and you’re barely reaching the late-twenties. What do you think? That’s the only person you should be listening to, yourself.”

“Where can a person like me,” Everett stated, a little annoyed, ”enjoy spring, a ‘sunshine-filled with rain’ season, without it having it to snow every few weeks? I’m sorta getting sick of sweater weather now.” 

“I’ll take sweater weather over any other kind… Would rather be too cold than hot, I can’t take the heat. Europe is relatively temperate in climate though, you’re probably on the wrong continent. Just don’t head too far north or it will be sweater weather for nine months of the year.”

Nora usually wasn’t the type to get absorbed in trashy gossip magazines but whoever had been seated at her table prior left a copy of People and she needed something to do while waiting for her coffee and muffin. A quick skim had turned into the brunette completely getting caught up in the latest Hollywood scandal. “Wow, Kanye West is fifty million in debt? Then how the hell does he wear shoes that cost more than my entire two years at college?”

The promise of coffee was the only thing that had managed to get Dan through the last four hours of shift, working without a break for nearly fifteen hours. Usually he would head straight home to catch up on sleep, but with his daughter due to be dropped off that afternoon there was no way he could stick to the usual routine. He stood in line patiently, not completely concentrating on the people around him when the brunette woman spoke up. “Hmm?” He asked, glancing over the magazine. “I guess that’s Hollywood for you. Fifty million in debt, still able to buy shoes that could mortgage a house...”
