sanguinisa:
“Oh, I know. I ate.. um, three? Maybe four.” At this point, Mirai’s imitating the moves seen in the Uptown funk video. It’s going as well as you’d expect (see: poorly). But you can’t keep a good girl down, so she grooves on. “B-bad dancing? Pfft, nice joke, Senpai. These are my best moves!”
“Amazing. You really do have a keen nose for free food.” Akihito’s trying not to laugh. It’s hard--she just looks so ridiculous. And cute as hell, but that was another story--maybe it was the beers talking, the ones Matoi insisted he drink.
“As your upperclassman I think... I think it’s my duty now to tell you that you might want to stick to gardening.”
Perpetuated on by Kanbara, (of course, who else) the argument continues. Rather then add in her own opinion (and further the whole conversation, a mere time-waster, at best) Mirai rolls her eyes and remains silent. True enough though, he does have a point – she had her doubts Kanbara could argue so strongly on something that wasn’t glasses, or bad literature. Maybe chuuni-syndrome, and the adverse affects it had on kids these days? She can see him using a diagram of Nue for it, even now.
“Alright, alright, I will.” She adds, simply to cool the raging fury of her bespectacled-obsessed friend. It’s not much, but something, at least. Better then allowing him to continue his rant – or worse, spiral off into another tangent.
Mirai’s already forming a response as they come to the crossing. She doesn’t want him to worry too much about her (honestly, he does that enough already) so there’s a white lie in there, somewhere. Yet, before Mirai can open her mouth and sooth the worries of Kanbara, a resounding thump reverberates through the air, followed by the ear-splitting sound of an oncoming motorcycle. The entire scene passes too fast for her to catch proper, but the next thing she knows is Kanbara has fallen back into her arms (his body shaking from shock, arms reaching skyward) with the bike and its rider far from view.
“K-Kanbara!” In spite of him being right there, and very much alive, Mirai shouts. Her voice cracks, eyes wide in disbelief. Petite finger dig into his shoulders and give a vigorous shake. “Kanbara, are you alright?! Are you hurt? Did you hit you? How are your legs?” Right, that last one was pointless, but this is a first for Mirai. Call her a little shaken, if you would.
Releasing him from her iron-clad grip, Mirai shoves a palm into his face. “How many fingers am I holding up? I-if you don’t get it right I’ll call an ambulance, the police and the fire department. Don’t go into the light! Whatever you do, Akihito, don’t go into the light!”
“I--” The barrage of questions was as dizzying as the impact of the motorcycle, if not more so. What else was dizzying was the fact that his underclassman is rather close to him. It’s a shame he nearly had to be turned into roadkill for something like this to happen, really. He’s still so freaked out he can’t properly enjoy it. “I’m fine!”
A small part of his brain was thanking that asshole on a motorcycle, whoever they were. It was... well, it wasn’t nice, his current situation, but the fact that a bespectacled beauty (ah, how the light danced off the edge of her thick red glasses!) was getting all frazzled on his behalf, shaking his shoulders and all that... well it didn’t make up for the fact that he nearly died (there was a pretty nasty bruise forming on his forearm, judging by how painful it felt) but. It was... a silver lining to this cloud of a near-death experience. Something like that.
“Five! Five, you’re holding up five fingers!” He yelped, with more volume. “I think I’m okay, Kuriyama, there’s no need to--” He was ignored as Mirai becomes more and more panicked. Akihito batted her hand aside, and placed his own hands upon her shoulders. “Calm down! I’m alive, I think! Don’t call the cops or the fire brigade!”
He just wanted to go and sit down and eat like half a dozen tacos, but first he needed to reassure Mirai that he wasn’t going to go up to the big ranch in the sky. It would be pretty hard to eat tacos if she was freaking out like that.
“O-of course I came! Ryuko invited me so.. I.. had to come. No, I wanted to come! Besides, what’s the point of coming to a party if you don’t party.”
Then, she starts to dance around her upperclassmen. Rather badly, too.
“Well, I’m glad she invited you. Matoi is quite fond of you, you know. And... well, bad dancing aside it’s nice to see you here.” When she began to dance... well, he sighed gustily, crossing his arms over his chest. “There’s food, you know. Someone brought a lot of pizza.”
✁ - - dreamghastly
“Hey, Kanbara! Glad to see you could make it tonight.. Heh.. Lookin’ sharp, as usual. You come here alone? I haven’t seen pinky yet, so I thought she would’ve come with you.”
A long drag from a ”cigarette" accompanies Ryuko’s words, her maneuver surprisingly delicate for such a gruff young girl. Turning her head slightly, a small puff of smoke would escape her lips as she cracks a side wards grin at her friend. “I don’t mind you usin’ my room if you wanna take her somewhere.. Quiet. I can’t guarantee it won’t already be occupied, though.”
Passing her puffer along to some random highschooler, Ryuko swaps them for a bottle of beer and offers it to her male friend. “Anyways. We can discuss that later. Have a drink, relax. Grab something to eat– Somebody brought so much fuckin’ food here I think I might have lunch next week.”
“I don’t think Kuriyama’s coming. This doesn’t seem like her kind of thing, to be honest.” It wasn’t Akihito’s thing, either. But if he was here... well, she and Matoi were friends, right? Every dog had their day--or every bespectacled beauty their party. Who knows, Mirai might just come because of the free food. It’s kind a why he’s here after all. “Thanks, I guess.”
He’d just ditched the school’s mandatory jacket--he didn’t even stop by his apartment to freshen up--but if Matoi was going to compliment him, well, he wasn’t gonna stop her. Let the rambunctious troublemaker have her fun. He would stop her in her tracks if she did or said anything really ridiculous.
“You’ve smoked a little too much, Matoi, if you’re still going on about that.” He takes the bottle of beer, but doesn’t do anything with it. Instead, he makes a beeline for a nearby table. “You always say you need to carbo-load or something like that, so the more the merrier... Ooh, who brought the thin mints?”
“Get down with your funky self, Kanbara.”
“There is only one Akihito Kanbara as of this moment and he is... he is speechless.” He shrugs. “Well. I guess I can say I didn’t expect you to come...”
And then there’s Mirai, on the dancefloor–
“Uptown funk you up, Uptown f-funk you up!”
“C-come on, dance!”
Party hard, man.
“I’m too sober for this.”
bloodystreak:
“I knew I shoulda just left you in English class. Now’s not the time to do that creative narrative bullshit - I ain’t your teacher and I’m not gonna give you an A for describing my life in a weird way.”
Once they’ve hit the outside world, Ryuko runs a hand through her hair and lets out a rather refreshed sigh. Classrooms smelt of despair and F grades and that guy who sits in the corner’s body odour. Outside was only marginally better, but at least you could breathe a bit better. She lets out a bit of a disappointed ‘aw’ when news of Mirai’s great work ethic hits her ears. Damn that girl for being so work-oriented.
“I think I had a project due.. Once, uh.. Well.. Anyways. You know what I mean. She’s been gone for so long, I forgot what she looked like aside from those dorky glasses!” Ryuko’s quick to pick up on her friends pain expression, and as a sign of comfort she punches him in the arm. I know, weird comfort, but hey.. At least it’s a different sort of pain to think about. “Bullshit again! You totally wanna get in her pink - and I ain’t talkin’ about her hair.” Very nice, Ryuko. Feeling a bit vulgar?
“I can tell there is some awkward nerd sexual chemistry going on. You can’t tell me you haven’t at least tried to kiss her though.”
Some would say Ryuko’s bluntness was endearing - maybe even charming, in some sick way - either way, it’s sure to make Akihito either disgusted or tickled pink. Blinking at a sudden idea, Ryuko throws her arms out wide with sudden declaration.
“Hey! I wanna have a party soon. Maybe you can hook up then.”
“I haven’t tried to do anything, Matoi. Unlike you I actually have a sense of propriety.” Well. He stared at her glasses a lot. And her. But that was beside the point, because Matoi was assuming way, way too much! How did that saying go, again? ‘When you assume, you make an ass out of you and me’ or something along those lines. Really, she was going overboard with this--but wasn’t that just the way she was?
“For your own health, Matoi, you should stop saying such... ridiculous things.” It wasn’t certain if he was referring to the insinuations that he was attracted to her, or that her glasses were dorky. Dorky? Really? She would sink that low? “And maybe you should have your head looked at. You've gotten into so many fistfights that I’m pretty sure that you have dementia pugilistica. And before you ask, we took this up already... unless you’re not paying attention in Psychology.” Okay, that was a little mean, but it’s not like Ryuko could take--and dish out--far worse than that. And what was he supposed to do, let her say all these ridiculous things and just take it?
“I’m going to pretend you didn’t say that.” Even so, his cheeks warmed up. Just a little bit. He was a pubescent young man, after all. Growing pangs, testosterone, budding thoughts about the opposite sex, all that stuff. “A party?” Eager to change the subject, he latched onto the idea with gusto. “Didn’t your dad get mad last time?” He still remembered how someone... defiled... Mr. Matoi’s car. It was a story that wasn’t easily forgotten. “Are you sure that’s a good idea?”
He notes that they’re making good progress--though that’s probably thanks to Matoi’s impressive physique. The girl was, after all, a huge sports buff. Athletics was one of the few reasons she even bothered to come to school anymore...

sanguinisa:
A simple prod is all it takes to draw Nue in – hook, line and sinker – as per usual. Well, a prod hidden beneath a guise only Nue’s chuuni syndrome would recognize, but it works well enough. Mirai shuffles left to make room (little that there is, in their already crowded club room), before flicking through another disheveled novel. “I’m not encouraging anything. Well, I’m trying not to… It’s just easier to get Nue-Senpai to do something when you play along with her fantasies, rather then fight aainst them. Go with the flow, as they say.” Never mind that Nue is right beside her, fully aware, and more then likely to respond to their two-person conversation.
She places the book back into the box, rather then add it to the pile – given Kanbara’s particularities when it came to sorting, there was little point in trying to do her own. At this point Mirai’s just hanging to find a new gardening book (or manga, that’s always nice to come across). “They’re not too bad, Nue-Senpai. A little dated, maybe.. um, and worn, too. I think I saw one with erotic drawings in the back where the reader likely got bored of the actual erotica as well, but it’s not that bad.” Like no glasses, for instance. That kept Kanbara rather quiet. “You might find something that suits your tastes. Like a tome about magic, or how to make Kanbara-Senpai less grumpy,” she adds, rather nonchalant, before nose-diving into another novel.
Unfortunately, it seemed that most of what Mirai had said went one ear and out the other. Nue could take insults to her (after all, no one truly understood her greatness), but her precious stories were a completely different matter.
“You just don’t understand the greatness of Baruto! His dedication to saving his samurai clan even after they condemned him for housing a demon, one that he didn’t even want, is one of the greatest stories humans have ever concocted! Much better than this melodramatic star business!” By this point, the ‘demon’ had reached over the table to yell at her ex-comrade, knocking over a few stacks of books in the process. “Who wants to read stories about sick pretentious humans, anyway?!” Demons are waaaay more interesting.
dreamghastly
Unfortunately for the two (three?) of them, Nue’s managed to get Akihito in a state--mere seconds after she’s entered the room. Knocking over the books was fine. Insulting Don Green (he wasn’t that great anyways) was fine. But Baruto?! That was unacceptable. That was the last straw.
In his righteous wrath, Akihito just about forgot about Mirai’s presence. All his rancor, all his bottled up bitterness at his mortal life, it was all vented towards his chuuni upperclassman.
“BARUTO?! That two-bit piece of garbage?! Everyone likes it because it’s popular!” He leaned over the table, sticking his face right in Nue’s. “That ending was bullshit! Everyone was paired up in mediocre, poorly thought out pairings and were sent off to make babies like a bunch of Christian literalists! Genesis 9:7. King James version! ‘And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.’ That might work for a bunch of white people opposing birth control, but as an ending to one of the longest running manga series of our generation? Bull-fricking-horse-shit!” He sucks in a deep breath but continues on his tirade. “And don’t you even get me started on the fanbase! Half of the time people were reading it for BaruJasu and not the actual story! And the other half are just in it for the demons! Because they’re chuunibyous! Like you!”
“It doesn’t matter if the stories are about humans or demons or talking alpacas!” He slammed one hand on the table, so hard that it hurts--he didn’t care, he was just so outraged by his infuriating upperclassman. “What matters is that the author appeals to the important things in life! Truth! Beauty! Justice! And pretty girls... IN GLASSES!”
It would be a miracle upon heaven and earth if no one had heard that.
Arguments of this kind will always arise between the two – he, a glasses fetishist, and she, a bespectacled beauty – they were no better then oil and water. In spite of that they do get along well, somehow. Like two determined tennis players, they’d hit the ball back and forth until one gave up for the day, only to return for another round the next day. Right, that’s a bad analogy, but it’s the best Mirai can come up with.
“My tastes are perfectly fine. You’re the only one here with unpleasant taste.” She half-whispers it in retaliation to Kanbara’s shouts and all-encompassing loudness. He gets that way whenever they argue. Or when he argues in general. It’s a given, these days. “If that’s how you feel, maybe you should join the debate club. I hear they’re looking for a new speaker, since their last one dropped out due to stress.” She’s joking. Sort of.
“But if that’s how it is, I’ll try to bring something more to the club’s tastes to the next meeting. There are a few novels under my bed you might find interesting.” She pauses. “And no, they don’t have glasses before you ask.” As if Mirai would feed Kanbara’s ego by outright admitting defeat so easily! She’ll be sure to show him, come the club meeting.
“You say freeloading, I say saving for possible emergencies ahead. There’s a difference.” Then, she pouts; only because she can’t nudge him back (curse their height difference). “Well, no. I was asked to help with some work by one of the teachers and I couldn’t.. really.. say no.” Totally not the bonsai, though Mirai would’ve loved it if it was the bonsai.
“The debate club’s boring. If I’m going to have heated discussions, it only really works if I have deep personal investment in the subject! I can’t argue about the tobacco industry and North Korea’s theoretical nuclear disarmament with the same sort of spirit, you know.” He didn’t comment on her ‘unpleasant taste’ jab with more than an insulted sigh. “Well, whatever you bring... just make sure it’s club-appropriate!” On top of that, she had the temerity to make a comment about glasses! That made his lips twitch towards a frown, but he restrains himself. He had to be the gracious senpai, after all, even if his kouhai made a grievous mistake.
She’d get what was coming to her anyways. It was just a matter of time, and Akihito had all the time in the world.
“Eh.” He shrugged, but frowned when she had to explain herself. As they came to a crossing, Akihito’s eyes dart left, then right--it was clear, and safe to cross. “Well, that’s pretty rude. Didn’t that teacher at least give you a chance to grab a bite to eat? What were they having you do?” He takes a step forward and--
Nearly gets run over by a man on a huge motorcycle. Akihito is actually clipped by the vehicle--the impact stings, but is forceful enough to send him backwards, bumping into Mirai. He doesn’t get a good glimpse of the man (he’s too fast) or his plates, but that’s the last thing on his mind right now.
“Holy... holy shit.” There’s a long pause as the young man tries to make sense of his situation. “Hey, Mirai.” He turns to look at her. “Did... I just die?” Akihito stands frozen in place, both hands up in he air like a defeated soldier begging for mercy. His brain is an utter blank, and he can hear nothing but the thump-thumping of his heart in his ears. “Holy shit.”
“Who knows… This is my dad we’re talking about.” A bit of a weird look masks her face and she looks at him like he’s just told her to murder someone. “Well, I can’t guarantee anything too elaborate - they might think I’m reachin’.. But I’ll cook something up real nice. Just you wait and see.” Her hands rub together much like an evil villain (or a fly, really either works) as Matoi puts that to the back of her mind. If anything, Akihito should be afraid of just what she was capable of conspiring.
“You know what my stomach is like - I had kendo this morning, plus no breakfast, so I’m ready to load my carbs.” Patting her stomach, a soft rumbling could be heard underneath her fingertips. “Alright, alright – just thought I was being polite by asking you for ideas. Food it is. Then we can hit up downtown.. Hey, I think they updated the prizes in the arcade – maybe I’ll finally win something this time, huh?” A cheeky grin cracks her lips as she already starts the walk to the exit, hurrying up things a tad.
Laughing at rememberance of their smoking, Ryuko can’t help but shake her head slightly. Boy, did he not react to that very well. “Well, we can always hit up yours after if you want. Maybe we can swing by and pick Mirai back up after class.. Not like I want her touchin’ the stuff.. But can’t just leave her here, right? She is your girlfriend and all.. ~ Betcha missed her.” He wouldn’t see her poking her tongue out teasingly, as she instead keeps her face hidden by opening a door and slinking behind it.
If he’d known that his friend had taken his suggestion seriously... he probably would have taken her rather melodramatic gesture a bit more seriously. As it stood he rolled his eyes a little at her. The poor boy had no idea on exactly what he’d unleashed.
He’d find out sooner or later.
“And so the triumphant champion and her unfortunate flunky finally escaped the dastardly dungeon and sought out a mighty feast, with joyful revels to match it.” As they finally exited the school, he dropped his ‘fantasy novel narrator’ voice--it was very deep and very impressive, believe me--in order to respond to Ryuko like a proper human being. “I don’t know, I think that claw game just doesn’t like you. If you do win something--which I doubt--try to make sure it’s one of those little pink bears. Surefire way to win my heart.” He spoke in a flat tone as he dutifully followed Matoi onto the streets.
“Nah, she said she’s got some project or something due.” She’d been a little frazzled, chattering on about a ton of fancy math terms that Akihito only vaguely remembered from his own time in that class. He felt quite bad... but he couldn’t help her. He visibly bristled when Ryuko touched upon a rather... sensitive spot.
“Ha ha ha. Very funny, Matoi.” He crossed his arms over his chest, a frown crossing his features. “First of all, you’re right in that I wouldn’t want her a mile within the ‘stuff’.” Akihito sounded a little... overprotective. “Secondly, I didn’t miss her... I saw her this morning. And finally, as cliched as the line is,” He looked visibly pained as he spoke his next words. “She’s not my girlfriend. She may be a bespectacled beauty, but I am content to be her wise upperclassman, gently guiding her through the turbulent waters of high school life.” Way to go, mister thesaurus.

Books are for nerds
She’s only recently taken to the literature club (no thanks given to Kanbara, and his constant mother hen nagging), but it’s a cozy little thing, something Mirai can appreciate. Besides, she’s allowed to keep her bonsai’s on the ledge, and the shelves have some of the rarer gardening books on the island, so it all works out for the best. Mostly, anyway. Save one factor, but she only appears at certain intervals, like clockwork. Speaking of which–

1.
There she is.
Mirai looks up from the box, paper back in hand, to smile at the senior posing in the doorway. “Good morning, Nue-Senpai. Oh I mean.. Um, Grand Demon of Illusions. It’s nice to see you stop around again.” Nue, for all her grandeur, was the Literature club’s head in name – and even that was slim, at best. Were it not for her senior status (and some strange even that conspired before she entered school) Kanbara would have taken over. Well, Mirai’s not too bothered by it all; her leader status, or her chuuni syndrome.
“Did you come to help with sorting? Like Kanbara-Senpai said, we would really appreciate the extra hands.” Wait, that won’t work. “I mean.. Would you, oh Grand Demon, help your lowly servants with this task? We are in dire need of assistance.”
Nue pouted. What was with the lackluster reaction? Had she really become so predictable? Unacceptable. One which commanded illusion should never fall into a routine. Living unexpectedly, deep within the unknown… that’s how she was meant to exist. Hopefully her powers didn’t dull because of it.
“At least one of you pathetic serfs is trying. Show some sort of respect, Burning Daemon. Need I remind you I outrank you?” In both status and age, somehow… How a demon like her could even stand to still be acquainted to these two was a mystery. The one known to the humans as Akihito used to be one of her kin, before being brainwashed by the other, Mirai. Still, as snarky as they could be, the pair was usually the only ones that would give Nue the time of day.
“I suppose I could take time out of my busy schedule to assist you with this trivial job. A leader must lead by example, after all.” Looking quite proud of herself, Nue took a seat next to Mirai. That grin immediatly flipped into a frown once she caught sight of the books. She quickly flipped through, her expression souring even more.
“What is with these tomes… I see your taste is still as shit as usual.”
dreamghastly
Akihito didn’t really know if there was a God or Buddha or Flying Spaghetti Monster out there, and neither did he usually care, but right now he scrambled to remember the most basic words of praise to these hypothetical supreme beings in the hopes that his frantic prayers would deliver him from this living Gehenna.
“Don’t encourage her, Kuriyama.” Akihito flipped through the paperback in his hands before putting it in one of several discrete piles--whether this was ordered by quality of the text or the physical state of the book itself wasn’t known to anyone but Akihito himself.
“I got these as donations from work, you know. It’s not like beggars can be choosers... and you’re one to talk. Don’t you still watch those shitty shonen anime?” With a soft toss, another book goes onto the largest pile of books. Akihito’s about to return to his work, when he noticed the book in Nue’s hands... or more specifically, its title. “Hey, ‘The Fault in our Constellations’ wasn’t that bad! Everyone just dogpiles on Don Breen just because everyone likes talking shit about him on the internet!”
He was probably just saying that to be argumentative--he’s never actually finished the book...
sanguinisa
So she lets the glasses argument die, if only because it’s one they always have. Call it routine, if you will. Sooner or later he’ll start up on it again (my bespectacled beauty, where are you?!, she can hear him now), and, as always, she’ll fall into the trap.
The conversation that replaces it is no different, however. “M-me? You’re placing this on my shoulders, Kanbara?” Mirai refutes with a frown, and what could be called a huff. A small, easily missed huff. She’s not very good at huffing. “Every time I bring something to the meetings, you tell me no! Last time I brought in Jojo’s bizarre adventure’s, you took a single look at the cover, then shouted ‘no’ at the top of your lungs!”
She adjusts her glasses, to give her fingers something to do, before shoving them back into her coat pockets. “A-and don’t even think of bringing my bonsai into this! They’re good plants, and you know they’ve helped brighten the room up since I moved them from their plots in the gardening club.” Which was sort of against the rules, if you looked at the fine print of things.
Before she could argue the point further, Akihito’s already steps ahead of her and still walking. Adjusting her bag, Mirai sped up her pace to match this own; brushing shoulders with him. “It was a joke, but I guessed as much. I have some savings though, and I am hungry after skipping lunch.. so, okay. And thank you.”
He’s just biding his time, honestly. Flattery given often loses its lustre quickly, or so said a character from a video game he once played. Not that he was good at flattering people, unless it was loaded with caustic sarcasm meant to kill any chance of it being taken as such.
“Get a better taste in manga, then!” He huffs his own mighty, manly huff. Well, it’s mighty and manly in comparison to Mirai’s stealthy huff. Most huffs are, in comparison to hers. “And that’s the sort of stuff I want you to bring, because you’re forgetting we discussed its flaws and merits for hours... that’s exactly what a literature club is for! But bring literature next time. Not a manga. We’re a literature club, not one of those godless manga/anime clubs.” The hypocrisy was strong with this one.
He’s being rather loud now--some of their fellow students overhear their conversation but those who are acquainted with either member of the amazing duo just chuckle knowingly to themselves, though Akihito ignores them completely--or just doesn’t care. Thankfully, he calms down when the topic shifts back to where they’re gonna eat.
“I thought as much... freeloading as usual, huh?” He chuckled, and nudged her playfully with his shoulder... though he frowned slightly when she continued. A look of mild concern crossed his features, but he didn’t look at Mirai. “ Hey, why’d you skip lunch again? Miss out on homework, or something?” It was probably the bonsai. Akihito would’ve bet his week’s allowance that it was the bonsai.
Why did his sister have to have a kid? What was the appeal of children? Sure, you needed offspring in order to perpetuate humanity, but why had his sister decided she needed one? She was a relatively smart woman, and unlike the rest of his family, Hazama hadn’t estranged her, but this was just so…
The arrangement was thus: due to her frequent business trips, his sister had asked him to look out for her child. He was older now, but still needed a guardian. As such, she’d entrusted the boy to him, even giving him control of the rent for his apartment. He’d complied, mostly to keep a good image with at least one person in his family, but in truth he hated it all. He hated wasting his time and resources, and it was clear the kid din’t even like him. Granted, he didn’t make any effort to bond that wasn’t thinly veiled contempt, but still.
If he had to suffer his nephew would with him.
Today he’d decided to annoy him by arriving ten minutes late. It was petty, really, but he knew the kid hated having his Fridays wasted like this. Hazama didn’t care for it either, but getting under Akihito’s skin made up for it. Also, this place had very good eggs. After purposefully loitering outside for several seconds, he entered the restaurant. After tipping his hate and giving the waitress a gentlemanly greeting, he sought out his nephew in their usual spot.
“Good afternoon, Akkey! I hope the day has been treating you well,” he began with his false pleasantries as he took his coat off and took his seat, setting his hat next to him. “I hope you haven’t been waiting for too long – there was a snag at work that I had to fix up. Some coworkers, honestly.” He laughed.
“Have your ordered yet? Man, I’m starving. Haven’t eaten since this morning.” He continued to ramble on, well aware that his aimless prattle would likely annoy the other.
It was petty, yes, but the way he greeted the server just ticked Akihito more than he would’ve been comfortable talking about. It was like... they were in cahoots, or something. It was a stupid thought but it was one that he held with a ferocious sort of stubbornness.
“I’m fine.” He mostly tuned out Hazama’s words--preferring instead to let his blabber fade into background noise and remember the way his mother talked about ‘Uncle Haz’ and how she was positive that the two of them would get along. On second thought, Akihito regretted that. The memory just made him more ticked off. How could she leave him in the care of a man like this?!
“No, I was waiting for you.” If he’d gone and ordered Hazama’s dozen or so boiled eggs--it was all he ate whenever they were together. He still didn’t know why--they would’ve been cold by now, which would give his uncle yet another reason to complain and in general make this meeting exponentially more headache-worthy than it already was. “I’m sorry to hear that... well at least we’re here now, right?”
He wasn’t sorry in the least. He couldn’t be less sorry about anything in his goddamn life. With that thought in mind, he offered Hazama a menu. They both knew he was going to order those fucking boiled eggs again... but he had to be polite, right?
