Flaws

There's something a bit fascinating about how each of the Unstable protags flows are so relatable.

Wemmbu's what it means to come in second place your entire life, to be stuck in the shadow, so close to glory yet never able to achieve it, always told you just aren't good enough. He's the simmering rage that roots itself in your gut. He's what it means to be good but never enough. Power Arc showed us what happens when that rage finally spills out, the burst of power it gives, the want, the need to just feel like at the top for just a moment.

Flame's struggled with building an identity for himself outside of the strongest. He roots himself in one skill, one aspect, and holds onto it, because without his skill, he's nothing. It's the anxiety of losing everything you've worked so hard to accomplish in one little slip up, one mistake costing you EVERYTHING, and then having to wonder what happens to you then? What are you without that one thing? The fear of becoming nothing eats you inside out, always scrambling to prove yourself. Power v Skill Arc, all how Flame lost his position and then ruthlessly fought for it back, unable to find something from what he saw as nothing.

Spoke embodies the refusal to grow up, to accept the harsh realities of the world, the desire to go back to being a kid again. He refuses to acknowledge the weight of his 'pranks', acts in his own self interest without the care of others, jokes around during serious times, because being serious means the death of joy. Growing up feels like stepping into a monotonous world where creativity is stifled, pranks are looked down upon as immature, happiness is twisted into content. Him spending hundreds of days in bases, messing with the lives of others, refusing to see what he was ruining by holding onto his own joy. Why must he sacrifice for others? What about his own happiness?

Parrot's black and white worldview is trying to ignore the complexity of life to keep his own ideals correct. It's the deep rooted knowledge of knowing your wrong but also knowing that being wrong will break you. So you keep being right, keep shifting your world to ensure your right. It comes from never having been wrong, never having been truly challenged and beaten, always having the upper hand to ensure your world remains intact. Parrot refused to accept Wifies as the Director, because Parrot would never kill Wifies, his best friend, but, he could kill the Director, his enemy. It's holding yourself together with duct tape and spite for death.

Protags and their flaws...

while watching the new video, i paused and tried to figure out which books were shown in both the libraries, and i found that one of them was a book called "flowers for algernon".

it's interesting cuz it sort of parallels to the characters themselves, in a certain way.

the book is about a man named charlie who has an iq below average and undergoes a surgery to boost his intelligence. algernon is a mouse that the doctors first attempted (and succeeded) the surgery on, and then it was done on charlie. during the book, he learns so much about humanity and gains new perspectives and learns to appreciate the new sides of humanity that he was previously not able to understand. as the story progresses, he notices that algernon's intelligence is slipping and he eventually dies, and that actually ends up happening to charlie too. before it does, charlie actually discovers a flaw in the experiment that is the core reason as to why something like that even happens. his love interest and teacher, alice, is someone who he learns a lot from both about the world and about himself and he falls for her. at some point, he allows himself to have a relationship with her, but leaves as he starts noticing his intelligence slipping.

in a way, you could say that the king represents strauss and nemur (the directors of the experiment), because he is the one that grants derek the intelligence. throughout that process, he meets avery whom he develops a close friendship with (or relationship if ur a shipper lol ✌️) and learns a lot about, and that can sort of parallel to alice. derek's mind slowly starts slipping - with and without the king - and eventually he sends avery off, just like charlie did. you could even say that the "flaw" in derek's case is the fact that his mind was impure as he was merging with the king, and that's the reason why his mind then seized to exist.

don't know if im reaching here, but i like to think that these two correlate like this.

woke up to the whole internet finding out marlow isn't even a real person. it was a man pretending to be a woman this whole time. and he WAS cheating the whole time. what the shit.

literally nothing about marlow was ever real. this person made friends through that account, profited off of pretending to be a woman, and the dude behind the marlow account was planning to make "her" commit????!?! AND make allegations?? all for the "love of the game"???????

like sure it was obvious the voice was ai (i wasn't even in the mcpvp community, just heard of her from parrot's unstable vid) but i did NOT think for a second it went this far, i just thought it was a girl using a voice changer to protect her identity...... im genuinely distraught.

the concept of each season starting with wemmbu trying to peacefully build a base/civilization and then getting wrapped up in some bullshit EVERY time...

huh. i honestly doubt its going to be a completely new character, i feel like this is someone we already know of. but whoooooo

now that the finale is fully here, i just wanna say what a good antagonist lettuce was. ash and lettuce did both ended up in similar positions, using very similar strategies, but their motives were so different, and i think thats why this season is amazing. even though there were many moments that resembled the mafia arc, this one still stands out as a completely separate story of its own.

ash was someone who wanted immense power and control over the people - and he got it, meanwhile lettuce's reason for wanting those same things were entirely different, he had an entire backstory and a motive that actually does completely explain why he did what he did. not only did we see what environments he was in and how that shaped his world view, we also saw that he did have someone who gave him hope and something he aspired to be - he was never completely evil nor was he stripped away from his humanity during his times in different civilizations, and we were shown how easy it is to stray away from the path you once yearned to be on, just because you got too lost and carried away by your own power. not only that, he was always aware of all of it. he knew that he went too far, he knew that he wasn't doing the most moral things, but in his eyes, if crossing that line meant creating peace then it would've all been worth it.

unlike ash, he didnt hide, he didnt run away - he came back and owned up to what he did, which further proves that he was never truly a bad person, he just got caught up in making horrible decisions, believing its the only way to achieve the peace he always craved to have.

i also really loved the seemingly small detail in sky civ with the book he wrote, because it just further allows you to connect to him and understand him, and i personally think thats exactly what makes a good villain - when you can sympathize or even relate, and still view their actions for what they are.

this ep honestly felt like such a throwback to the mafia days in a way. it was like one of those tropes where the mc starts off the story clueless and struggling and finishes it off by coming back to the same place stronger and better in every way.

wemmbu, the player that was considered one of - if not the MOST bloodthirsty - putting in his vote LAST when deciding what to do with lettuce and deciding on a peaceful option

parrot, no longer blindly rushing into fights and putting himself in danger as well as others, but instead allowing the stronger players to be the main fighters instead

flame, even though he wasn't a protag in the mafia arc, now being on the side of peace instead of actively participating in the war as an enemy and being on the side of destruction

and finally spoke, kind of messier than ever, but more aware of his actions, more in tune with himself and the consequences of everything he's done and (hopefully) on the road to redemption
