Very importantly Dany would recognize that she CANNOT make him her master of laws bc he’d be way too much of a hardass but she also can’t pick someone else as her hand bc he’d be a middle child about it and the whole thing makes her restructure her entire council to put everyone’s talents to good use so he gets appointed something between hand and guy who can figure out how to structure and finance all her new social programs. grace as a parthenaic figure and grace-stratt-rocky as a sort of parthenaic triangle.

what i mean is: grace as the reluctant parthenos, the young virgin of ancient greece, who is nearing full maturity, ripe for commitment, but hesitant about this change in identity. parthenaic chorus were often added to greek tragedies, but they were performed outside theater productions too, and the fears and rituals they refer to are part of the virginal coming of age cult.

maturity = in this case the idea of marriage connects to that of sacrifice, in the same logic of sublimation of the self to necessity/duty/costumes. sacrifice, in project hail mary, stands for a very archaic, radical idea of sacrifice. the three astronauts aren't getting their throats slit on the temple of zeus in the desperate hope of change in human fortunes, but they're not not getting their throats slit for a desperate hope of change in human fortunes.

the same dread is attached to parthenoi, when it comes to marriage; the possibility of annihilation and violence is not dissimilar (iphigenia comes to mind). the common theme of death as a synonym for marriage in parthenos choral songs is here very present. turning into an animal to escape sexual maturity is also common trope/reference/hope for these maidens, and we even have all that fox imagery attached to grace and his attempt to flee. the connection to persephone as a recurrent reference is also legible, in that grace is effectively stolen away, and stolen away from earth at that.

most of all, i'd argue that the two modes of opposite maturity common in parthenaic songs are present in grace's narrative: flight from rape/murder by space mission, which is unethical, without diké, and made through a forceful erasing of the past self through amnesia vs a legitimate marriage/self-murder.

in this case, the legitimate path to maturity is returning for rocky in the expectation of eventual death, leaving behind a previous life; a reaching of one's purpose or telos through the willing death of the previous identity. i'll even go so far as to say that his flashbacks serve the same function as partheneion chorus inside the general tragic narrative. is this anything.

Over 100 years ago, a French banker named Albert Kahn undertook a massive photography project that became known as The Archives of the Planet. Sending photographers to every continent, Kahn aimed to collect colour snapshots from all corners of the Earth using a brand new technology known as the Autochrome Lumiere. Over 72,000 colour images were taken over the course of the project, but the following series focuses on the vibrant and iconic daily life of Paris, from nearly a century in the past.

Kahn commissioned four photographers to collect images set specifically in cosmopolitan Paris: Leon Gimpel, Stephane Passet, Georges Chevalier, and Auguste Leon. They utilized pioneering technology that employed colour filters made from microscopic grains of dyed potato starch. The artists began documenting the city in 1914, just days before the outbreak of World War I. The images collected portray the everyday struggle of real life, juxtaposed with a joie de vivre characteristic of Parisians, in a city on the brink of devastation brought on by a war that would alter the world.

This collection showcases an amazing, colourful time period, with historical scenes that are as familiar as they are foreign, not to mention a nostalgic depiction of humanity.
