The next morning felt like you were walking on your tiptoes, afraid Jay would regret his decision, luckily that didn’t happen; of course the dynamic was a little different. You two worked so much better and the team, including Voight noticed it.
Upton and Atwater got a lead on a possible suspect, he could be responsible for the murdered. All of you were working hard, there was not much margin for error, you had to be precise about who you interrogated, who you visited and which gangs you pointed to before you had a theory.
It took you one more week to go undercover, as Voight had put it, you and Jay were the ones chosen for the job. You would be the contact while Jay would be the supplier of the drug.
Two more weeks for the gang leader to be confident enough to hold a meeting, Jay was waiting for this guy to put in a time and date when you walked into the locker room. It was a habit for you to look over your shoulder to make sure no one was around, this time it was a little different; of course it mattered if someone found out but you two had handled things secretly and carefully, despite that, it didn't matter if something happened because you supported each other.
“Hey, Jay. Can we talk?”
He looked up and stood up, holding the phone in one hand.
“I know we did this before but I want to make this right, just the two of us so, you don’t mind if we keep this a secret for a while?”
“Are you sure? I don’t mind, as long as you agree with this.”
You laid your shoulder on his locker, smiling.
“Yeah, I’m good. Look at us, talking and communicating about this in the locker room, this is what a call growing up”.
Jay’s laugh was always the best, and made you feel better being the one making him laugh.
“Well, talking about growing up…”
The phone’s screen lights up with a text message.
“We got an address, South Pulaski at 6 pm”.
“I’ll tell Voight, and the others”.
Jay nodded in agreement, following you on the way out to meet the team.
It was already dark outside. You and Jay have been in the old abandoned factory for an hour and a half, the group leader pushed the meeting for the second time just to make sure it was safe for him to meet you both.
Everyone was waiting, the van was parked in an alley, Hailey and Kevin were there, Kim was inside Voight's car with him and Adam was on the street, pretending to be a worker.
"It's late, Y/N. Are you sure Ramírez pushed the meeting again? Any possibility he canceled it?"
Adam talked on the microphone, you looked at Jay, rolling your eyes at Adam, even if he couldn't see you.
"I'm sure Adam, he should be here at any minute".
"We got company guys, two black cars on the side of the building".
Kevin said over the radio. Kim spoke a second later.
"We ran the plates in the system, we confirmed it's them. Jay, Y/N, they're on your way".
You looked at Jay and nodded. He squeezed your shoulder before Ramirez and his crew arrived at the meeting point.
"Sorry for the time, we were taking care of some business before. You know what I mean".
Jay gave a few steps closer to him.
"It's alright man, we're about to do some business here too. We got the money like we said".
You took the gym bag and opened it, showing him the money.
"Alright, alright. Let me count it and then I'll show you the product."
"What? No, no. C'mon man, we have been here for almost 3 hours, I count it myself, it's all there".
Jay said, a little too desperate. You put a hand on his shoulder, telling him to relax with one move.
"Hey, let the man count his money. He has all the right, we got the right to taste it then".
Ramírez looked at you, a little bothered by your comment.
"Hey, calm down. My product is pure, mami. I gave you my word but business is business".
"Well, that's my money and you have my word that the money is complete in that bag. Business is business, man".
He made a sign to one person of his crew who brought another gym bag near to you, he opened it and showed you the drugs, Jay looked at you, smiling.
"That's what I'm talking man! This feels like Christmas, right?"
Jay used the save word and with that, everybody moved. Hailey and Kevin came in first, followed by Kim and Voight, but someone decided to start shooting. Jay covered you with his body behind some boxes, you took your gun from your back, with the corner of your eye, you saw how Ramirez was running away with the money.
“We got a runner! Jay and I will follow him”.
You started to run after him, pointing your gun at him.
You shouted when Ramirez stopped for a second and shot at you. Using a wall as your shield you look at Jay.
“Chicago Police, freeze!”
“Suspect is running to the east side of the building”.
“We’ll meet you there”.
Hailey answered, Jay took the lead, his gun up and ready. You were behind him, close enough to shoot if it was necessary.
In a moment, Ramirez ran in a dark hallway shooting his gun at both of you, Jay covered for a few seconds before he ran to his way.
“Jay! Wait!”
You were looking at every space, being cautious, and suddenly you heard a shoot. “No, no, no, no'', those were your words inside your head when you ran to the place where you heard the gunshot.
You saw some blood on the floor, doubting you kept going, whispering Jay's name. In a moment you heard somebody's groaning, leaning to a wall you took a few deep breaths, your hands were sweating. You tried not to think in the only scenario you had in mind after those sounds, you took a final deep breath and made yourself move.
You walked towards a pile of boxes, surrounding it. You let out a breath, putting your gun down.
Jay was handcuffing Ramirez, whose leg was bleeding.
“He ambushed me, we had a fight and I shot him.”
It was like he read your mind, asking what had happened. A few seconds later, Hailey and Kevin showed up, putting their guns down.
"50-21 Henry, suspect in custody. Roll an ambo to our address".
Hailey spoke to the radio, Kevin helped Jay and both of them put the suspect on his feet again, Kevin walked him out.
"Are you both okay?"
Hailey spoke again, looking between you two, both of you nodded without saying a word.
"Good. Let's get out of here."
You didn't look at Jay before walking out the building, you just went directly to the truck and hopped on, waiting for your partner. Neither one of you decided to break the uncomfortable silence on the way to the station. Once you got there everybody went to change their clothes, you were quiet, immersed in your thoughts, you didn't notice when Jay laid his shoulder on your locker.
"Hey, is everything ok? You haven't talked"
He raised an eyebrow, looking worried down at you. You placed your badge in your jeans and closed the locker.
"Yeah, it's just I got scared when I saw the blood on the floor".
You crossed your arms on your chest.
"I want to tell the team about us. They are our family, we spend most of the time with them and I think they deserve to know in case we react to some scenarios."
Jay was nodding.
"I guess you're right. As long as you're okay with that decision, I'll agree. But I have to ask, are we telling Voight about this too?”
You thought about it for a few seconds, looking serious.
"I still don't know, I want to make you happy too, and I know you don't want to".
He smirked, putting a hand on your waist, pulling you closer to him, giving you a soft and warm kiss on your lips.
"Babe, it's your choice now. I mean, am I excited to tell him? No. But I understand your reasons on why you want to tell him, I might be agreeing with you on that. Whatever you decide, I have you back."
“That’s why I love you, Jay”.
“Oh, I know”.
The grin you love appeared on Jay’s face making you laugh, you walked out of the locker room followed by Jay behind you.
The suspect was in the hospital, Kevin and Adam were there waiting for him to interrogate him, while the rest of the team stayed in the bullpen doing some paperwork. It was near the end of the shift when Kevin and Adam arrived in the district, Ramirez confessed the man they found owed him money and stole some drugs, so he decided to take the problem in his hands. He was arrested, but stayed in the hospital for medical reasons. Everyone stayed for a little more time.
“I know we’re all tired but I invite the first round at Molly’s”.
Jay said, taking his jacket from the back of the chair, everybody cheered and started to take their things. Hailey looked at you, still sitting in your chair with files on your desk.
“Are you coming?”
You looked up, everybody was leaving. Jay stopped himself a little when he didn’t see you around with the group.
“Yeah, I’ll see you all there, count me in for the second round.”
Hailey smiled and left you there, padding Jay’s shoulder on her way out. You smiled at him, letting him know it wouldn’t be long. Once you were finished, you took the files to Voight.*
Molly’s was full that night, Stella’s new drink went viral because of Gallo and Ritter and something about TikTok; and of course besides the 51’s firemen there were people from the 21st District including the Intelligence Unit.
“There she is!”.
Ruzek shouted, clapping his hands when you got closer to the table all of you were sharing.
“Sorry guys, there’s a hell of traffic tonight.”
You took your jacket off, leaving it behind you. Jay gave you one of the shots he was drinking, putting it in front of you, you mouthered a ‘thank you’ to him.
“So Y/N, Jay said something about you telling us a very important thing and that we couldn’t guess”.
Kim said, pointing to you with her finger, you gave Jay a side look. She talked again when the waitress brought the drinks to the table.
“Because if it’s about how you and Jay were dating, kinda broke up and got back together again, we all know about it”.
You and Jay looked at each other, surprised.
“What, you didn’t think we would believe Jay hated you Y/N, right? I mean, we all kinda heard the fight you had in the scene when we got the case guys”.
Ruzek said, a huge smile on his face. You took your shot and drank it as fast as you could, the blush in your cheeks reaching down your neck.
“Kevin and I might or might not have told them about you two in the locker room some time ago”.
Hailey added before taking a sip of her drink.
“So I invited the first round for nothing”.
Jay said, laughing and putting his arm around your shoulders, leaving a kiss in the side of your head. It was like the weight in your back was lifted and taken away. It was what you always wanted, the scene you always imagined in your head was in front of you. You and Jay, your friends, drinking after shift at Molly’s just cherishing a good moment after a tough case.
You and Jay were almost the first ones to leave the bar, when Jay asked about your car you simply said you arrived in a taxi, his face lit up with that big smile and walked you to his truck.
Being in his place felt like home, he kept some of your stuff in his bathroom and in the drawer of his closet that he meant just for you. You were using one of his T-shirts to sleep, waiting for him to come out of the shower, both ended up a little sweaty after getting home, as you had decided to make up for lost time.
You went to bed, picking up the book you left in the night stand a few days ago. Moments later Jay came in, he was wearing his favorite, and yours too, gray pajama pants a little bit down on his hips, as he liked to wear them. He left his badge on his night stand beside, taking his watch after that, setting his alarm; you were a little nervous, biting your lower lip while waiting for the right words to come to your mind.
"I told Voight".
You mentally slapped yourself and closed your eyes for a moment. Jay turned himself on the bed to see you, pure confusion on his face.
“What? When?”
His voice was a little pitchy, he was really surprised and at the moment he felt a little hurt because he thought this was your private lives and it was no one's business, especially Voight.
“In the district, after giving him some files of the case. Listen Jay, I know this is not what you wanted but when I saw the blood…”
He took your hand with his, placing it on his knee, rubbing his thumb back and forth letting you speak, his eyes looking right at you.
“I was ready to kill him Jay, Ramirez, I swore to God that if you were hurt or, worse, I would kill him. And that scared me, what if we are in that situation again? And this time it’s you thinking I’m hurt? I want to do this right, and this was the right thing. Yes, we have to fill some forms to keep working together but at least we are covered. The team knows and they have our back, Voight has our back too. I don’t want to lose you in any way, Halstead.”
Jay’s eyes were soft when you looked back at him, pouring your heart out to someone was difficult, and you comprehended how hard it was for him the night he went to your apartment.
He gave you a small smile before taking you softly by your cheek to pull you close to him and kiss you, slowly, making sure you felt all the love he had for you. A few seconds later, he let you go, still keeping you close.
“I love you Y/N, you won’t lose me. If I have to fill some stupid forms to be with you, I’ll do it. I want you in my life as long as you want to be in it too.”
You kissed him again, smiling at his face.
“Jay Halstead, are you trying to propose?”
Jay laughed and kissed your forehead, he wrapped his arms around you.
“Not yet Y/N, but trust me. I’m marrying you one day”.
