ICYMI, there was fear that companies were scraping public AO3 fics to train their AI without the consent of AO3 or its users. That fear has been confirmed.

AO3 has written about what they’re doing (and what they’re not able to do), and they recommend restricting your work to AO3 registered users only. [Instructions here]

This gross misuse of the archive by techbros is why I’ve locked down my fics for the foreseeable future. I recommend the rest of you do the same.

I think it’s also worth noting that while I have absolutely not included content from fics in my datasets, the Sun and Moon chatbots I’ve made on Char.AI have almost word for word regurgitated parts of @bamsara ’s Solar Lunacy fic. The AI knows what FNAF is, knows which characters it’s trying to play, and I think it’s pulling from similarly scraped data. As much fun as people have been having with Char.AI, myself included, I think it’s also worth it for fandom folk to question how sites like this are making these bots possible.

FAB Chapter 9 Update - Apr 22, 2022

State-of-Life Notice

Hey, all! You've probably noticed the lateness of this genuine update post, and for that I'm sorry. As you might imagine, things went wild in meatspace. A few major things are going on that have made working on writing and keeping folks updated more difficult, given how much time / energy needs to be spent on them:

I'm preparing to move.

I got a new (remote!!) job.

Writing Update

I'm working on a timer, and so real life has taken precedence. This doesn't mean, however, that writing has ceased! On the contrary, whenever I have a minute while waiting for things, I try to work on Chapter 9 in my journal. I've made some fun strides with it (because when isn't it entertaining to drive Edgeworth up the wall?) and I'm excited to refine them when I can!!

That said... all the most recent material is still in the journal. I have to transcribe it into my writing software, and even after reviewing what's already there, I have nothing "neat" to paste as a preview. Hoping to get the next update out fairly soon, though -- and, with it, a snippet that's sure to pique interest!!

So... About Those Comments?

These are still on my radar. Please believe me when I say I read them on the regular because they make me feel so appreciated and happy. I just... don't know when I can get to sitting down and responding? It feels like whenever I try to start, something urgent happens that I have to address -- typically something related to the move. Perhaps it's poor luck. More likely it's poor planning. Most likely it's both.

I really, really, really hope I can get to them soon. I don't want to leave the lovely folks who've reached out to me hanging forever. Fingers crossed!

Tentative Post Date?

My temptation to put out a tentative deadline of May 25th is strong; it's not long before my move, and might keep folks sated while I make myself at home at my destination. But I also find it foolish to suggest any date at this point, even if it's just a guesstimate. There are far too many variables and I don't want to get everyone's hopes up for nothing. So, while I can certainly aim for that date, in all likelihood I can't see it coming out that early.

All I know is that it'll be ASAP, even if "soon" doesn't feel all that soon.

I've Heard Your Critiques Loud and Clear

It has come to my attention that I've done the Ace Attorney fandom a severe disservice with the mere existence of Feline Any Better? I should have known better than to go against the esteemed Miles Edgeworth's preferences in such a deliberate and disgusting fashion. He is a dog person, after all, and turning him into a cat is an act of sacrilege. As such, I plan to retcon the entire story thus far so that Edgeworth is, quite literally, a dog person instead.

Exciting Changes to Come

"But Dreamnorn!" you say, grasping at your internet-achieving device like you're clutching pearls. "How will you do it??" Well, a good author doesn't play their hand all at once (or their paws, as the case may be), but since you're all such a wonderful audience for enlightening me on the grave nature of my sins, I believe I can preview just a little bit of what's to come for the chapters that were already posted:

Instead of Catworth pawing delicately at the window, Dogworth will be such a Big Woofer that he can crash through without asking permission.

Instead of Catworth purring, Dogworth will wag his tail, of course! It might hit Phoenix in the face, but it's still an expression of his deep, repressed gay love.

The shadowy Thing inside the mask that Edgeworth talks to will now be the most intimidating canine entity I could imagine: a smoke chihuahua.

And this is all just the tip of the exciting iceberg!

But What About the Title?

This is where you all come in! Obviously, I can't have a dog-centric fanfiction titled Feline Any Better? in good conscience -- that's just false advertising and, thus, problematic and worthy of callouts. As a result, I am including a poll in this post so that you all can decide on the new title! OMG! I Need a Sneak Peek!!

“I wish I could ask you what happened.” These words emerged from Phoenix about a half hour later, once he felt confident that Mister Sir Fancy Pupper had calmed. With a weak chuckle, he scratched the pseudo-cat’s not-quite-dog’s neck. “Then maybe I could do something more useful than hang out and pet you.”

At that, Sir Fancy lifted his head towards Phoenix, his resting Grumpy Cat hangdog face more or less back. He had been curled in a hugenormous comfortable-looking ball for a while now, arching nosing into Phoenix’s petting hands and purring wagging over the last ten minutes. Flicking his tail Chuffing robustly and letting out an annoyed mewl whine, he proceeded to stretch up into a sitting position and nudge Phoenix’s left hand with a paw his snout.

Despite himself, Phoenix chuckled again — this time more genuine. He rubbed behind Sir’s Fancy's ears in the spot he seemed to favor, and as Sir Fancy leaned into it, a smile cracked Phoenix’s lips. “Aww, thanks. It’s nice to know I’m appreciated my ministrations are positively received.”

Phoenix was hit by a stroke of genius. His grin intensified as his tone slipped into a tease. “Or, should I say… ap-purr-eciated paw-sitively received?”

I know I've done some very problematic things in the creation of Feline Any Better?, but I promise you all, this is a sign that I am capable of growth and change. Excited Preamble (!!)

Hi, everyone! Before I dive in, I'd like to let you all know that there's new Feline Any Better? fanart that dropped today by @dragofelid that I'm queueing up to reblog after this post! If you catch this post prior to that one, please give it a look because it filled me with a ton of joy!!

Writing Update

Because of the curveball of me being laid off work soon, I took time away from writing to focus on my resume and my state of mind. Things are looking weird and rocky in my life right now, and it's likely I'm going to end up moving in a few months, which will, of course, complicate matters.

However, I still have over 1k words prepped for the start of Chapter 9, and I'm eager to keep working on it! Please enjoy this sample, which may be altered or removed in the final release:

[It] shouldn’t have surprised Edgeworth when, upon repeating this mistake, something similar occurred. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results — but, in this particular case, Edgeworth had not anticipated just how insane the result would leave him feeling.

Once again, he was taken aback by the condition in which he found Phoenix Wright. But. Oh.

This was so much worse.

Feline Any Better? | Chapter 8

A wrightworth / bratfeen fanfiction loosely inspired by “A Whisker Away.”

Story Pitch:

With the Prosecutor’s Gala coming up, the young but infamous Miles Edgeworth must procure a masquerade mask to keep to the theme. Little does he realize at the time that the one he obtains will turn its wearer into a cat. Unable to speak and not knowing how to change back, Miles is forced to flee the von Karma manor and escapes to the Ivy University campus. There, a chance encounter with an old friend unearths long lost memories, sparks some unnecessary feelings, and kickstarts a transformation that’s more than skin deep. But can Miles come to terms with it all before the allure of the mask claims him?

Chapter Pitch:

In which the slope gets all the slipperier.

CW: Unreality, asphyxiation, and disturbing imagery. This time, it's confined to a short section that can be skipped if needed (its purpose is to provide ~flavor~). I have indicated where the section starts and ends.

Chapter Excerpt:

Wright opened up to me. That was how the thought first hit Edgeworth, but he scoffed, turning over a page and shaking his head. This required vicious correction because, no, Wright hadn’t opened up to him.

He opened up to ‘Sir.’

Someone Wright believed to be a separate entity from Edgeworth himself. A safe person, cat or otherwise, to confide in. A man to reveal his inner thoughts about Edgeworth to.

And Wright believed in that wholeheartedly, all while Edgeworth stayed privy to those thoughts without Wright’s consent or knowledge.

Which means I'm almost there. I'm about to get to the much-quicker editing phase and I've been inundated with unprecedented (and perhaps inadvisable??) confidence!

My spoons have replenished lately and I'm not sure how long it'll last, but I'm riding the inspiration horse while it's here. I've kept all of you (and myself!) waiting so much longer than I ever hoped, but barring some disaster, I'm going to put down a deadline for myself to release the next part:

March 18th, 2022

Why this date? Because it'll mark six entire months since the last update. I'm determined to get it out by then! Who knows, Chapter 8 may come earlier! Maybe that's the hubris talking but HEY, I'm feeling genuinely optimistic about this for the first time in months! Call me an equestrian, because I'm going to ride this horse, too!!

Craning his head, Wright peered in the direction of the cork board. Edgeworth followed his gaze and cursed inwardly, having all but forgotten it until now, hating how he knew he would have blushed from embarrassment had he been human at that moment.

“Did I tell you how I’m going to see him soon?” Wright murmured.

Edgeworth tensed. His gulp felt like he swallowed a rock, and the rock was chasing his dropping stomach and both were going to burst out of his feet and against the ground. No, no, no, this was too much. Edgeworth hated where this was going.

He nodded anyway.

Craning his head, Wright peered in the direction of the cork board. Edgeworth followed his gaze and cursed inwardly, having all but forgotten it until now, hating how he knew he would have blushed from embarrassment had he been human at that moment.

“Did I tell you how I’m going to see him soon?” Wright murmured.

Edgeworth tensed. His gulp felt like he swallowed a rock, and the rock was chasing his dropping stomach and both were going to burst out of his feet and against the ground. No, no, no, this was too much. Edgeworth hated where this was going.

He nodded anyway.
