Chapter 2 of my Drarry gender-fuckery Contract Marriage fic, Knowingly, Willingly, Soberly! Draco becomes Dahlia and Harry has to tell Ron and Hermione he's getting married.

The second chapter of my As If Alive: What If...? This fic just keeps growing. It's gone from a projected 2 chapters to a projected 3 chapters.

Forgot to post this link when I posted the fic. Oops! This is a companion to Draco Malfoy and the Scars of the Past. It covers chapters 5 and 6 of that fic from Harry's POV.

The results of the fem!Draco name poll gave us Dahlia Malfoy. So, here's the first chapter of the fic that goes with the poll. I hope you like it!

As If Alive - Chapter 9
At long last, an As If Alive update! Regulus goes Christmas shopping with Lily on Diagon Alley while Polyjuiced to look like Sirius. I'm sure nothing will go horribly, horribly wrong.
Honestly, this chapter was meant to be much less angsty than it turned out. So... I'm sorry? You're welcome? I guess it depend on how much you like angst.

What should I name fem!Draco? Final Round
Dahlia Malfoy
Diana Malfoy
Diane Malfoy
Dirce Malfoy
Doriane Malfoy
We are down to the final 5 names for Draco.
Keep in mind that for this AU, I intend for Lucius and Narcissa to pick both Draco's male name (Draco) and female name (TBD) at birth due to tradition and the effect that magic that can easily change a person's physical sex has on society's development.
Name meanings/suitability:
Dahlia -
Dahlia is the name of a type of flower named for the botanist, Anders Dahl. In the language of the flowers, Dahlia means elegance, dignity, abundance, or instability.
This name suits because Dahlias are large, dramatic flowers and the flower language meanings are applicable to Draco/Dahlia. Floral names are very popular in the wizarding community with Narcissa and Pansy being just two examples of people in Draco/Dahlia’s inner circle with floral names.
Diana -
Diana means goddess, and is the name of a Roman goddess. Diana is generally accepted as the Roman equivalent of Artemis. She is the patron goddess of the countryside and nature, hunters, wildlife, childbirth, crossroads, the night, and the moon. She has been considered a triple goddess, merged with Luna (goddess of the moon) and Hecate (underworld goddess associated with magic and witches).
This name suits because of the connections with magic and family, two things of central importance in Draco/Diana’s life. Additionally, the connection to crossroads reflects Draco/Diana’s position during this fic, at a turning point between allegiance to the Dark and to the Light. Finally, there’s precedent for Roman names in the Malfoy family, as Lucius is a Roman name.
Diane -
Diane is the French version of Diana.
This name suits because of the connections with magic and family, two things of central importance in Draco/Diane’s life. Additionally, the connection to crossroads reflects Draco/Diane’s position during this fic, at a turning point between allegiance to the Dark and to the Light. Finally, the Malfoy family has connections to France, so a French name would be appropriate.
Dirce -
Dirce means cleft or broken in two. In Greek mythology, she was the aunt of Antiope, whom she treated cruelly. Dirce was ultimately killed by Antiope’s twin sons by Zeus, who tied her to the horns of a bull.
This name suits because it reflects Draco/Dirce being torn between allegiance to the Dark (and family) and to the Light (and Harry). It also can be seen as a nod to Draco/Dirce’s past as a bully. Greek names are also quite popular (Alecto [Alekto], Amycus [Amykos], Andromeda, Bartemius [Bartimaios], Cygnus [Kýknos], Daphne, Draco [Drakon], Orion, Sirius [Seirios], Theodore [Theodoros]), so Dirce would fit. Dirce is the most visually similar to Draco on this list.
Doriane -
Doriane is the French feminine of Dorian, which was first used as a given name by Oscar Wilde in the Picture of Dorian Gray. Wilde may have chosen it for the Dorians, who were one of the four main ethnic groups of Classical Greece. The etymology is uncertain.
This name suits because of the parallel between Dorian Gray hiding his corruption through the painting and the Malfoys hiding their corruption during the years between the Wizarding Wars. The plots begins with Narcissa manoeuvring Draco/Doriane into position to continue this trend after the war. Also, Draco/Doriane's changing body with regard to his/her static conception of self meaning that what's on the outside never truly reflects what is inside. One imagines, of course, that Lucius and Narcissa would choose this name for the Ancient Greeks and not the Muggle literature reference. The Malfoy family French connection also applies here.
Once I have Draco's fem name, I can get to writing chapter one. I can't promise a timeline because life is busy, but I'll be sure to post it on this tumblr once it's up on AO3.

What should I name fem!Draco? Round 5
Donna
Doriane
Dorothea
Draga
Drusa
I have 25 name options and every time I try to narrow it down I end up with more. I'm going to leave it up to the community. I'll do 5 rounds of 5 names each, then pit the top 5 against each other.
Keep in mind that for this AU, I intend for Lucius and Narcissa to pick both Draco's male name (Draco) and female name (TBD) at birth due to tradition and the effect that magic that can easily change a person's physical sex has on society's development.
Name meanings/justification:
Donna - Means "lady." The word "lady" implies high class and refined, which is what Draco was raised to be regardless of gender and regardless of whether he (or she) actively displays those traits. It's also another option that could display some level of laziness on the part of Lucius and Narcissa when choosing names.
Doriane - Is the French feminine of the name Dorian, which was first used as a personal name by Oscar Wilde in *The Picture of Dorian Gray*. I like the parallel between the painting hiding Dorian's corruption and the Malfoys hiding their corruption during the time between the Wizarding Wars. The plot of the fic will be started by Narcissa's attempt to maneuver Draco/Doriane into a position to continue that trend after the war. Also, Draco/Doriane's changing body with regard to his/her static conception of self meaning that what's on the outside never truly reflects what is inside. At the same time, it's a variation on a name created by a Muggle writer, so would Lucius and Narcissa even consider it in the first place?
Dorothea - Means "gift of God." It's a cute name and there's no doubt Lucius and Narcissa would see their child as a gift. The real draw of this one is backstory drama, since Dorothea is essentially Theodore backwards. Like, did the Malfoys and Notts plan this? Was there a rivalry going on? Did they know or was it coincidence? Was there a falling out over it? Not to mention the present day awkwardness when Draco/Dorothea starts actively using the name. Slytherin snark would abound.
Draga - Means "precious." Narcissa and Lucius would definitely see their child as precious, so the meaning fits. It's a bit of a stretch culturally, though. It's mostly here because it's phonetically similar to Draco. I've seen it used before for fem!Draco, which might be a point in its favor or against depending on your viewpoint.
Drusa - Means "strong." This one is also here as a "phonetically similar to Draco....if you squint." It's a more reasonable choice for the Malfoys given that it's the feminine of Drusus, which was a praenomen in Ancient Rome, just like the name Lucius was. Lucia, the feminine equivalent of Lucius would probably make for a great fem!Draco name, but I want Lucius and Narcissa to purposefully keep the initials the same between the 2 names for plot purposes. (And, yes, Drusilla is probably the more famous feminization of Drusus, but I'm not giving Draco the same name as an ugly step-sister from Disney's Cinderella, I'm just not.)

What should I name fem!Draco? Round 4
Dirce
Discordia
Dilys
Doireann
Domitia
I have 25 name options and every time I try to narrow it down I end up with more. I'm going to leave it up to the community. I'll do 5 rounds of 5 names each, then pit the top 5 against each other.
Keep in mind that for this AU, I intend for Lucius and Narcissa to pick both Draco's male name (Draco) and female name (TBD) at birth due to tradition and the effect that magic that can easily change a person's physical sex has on society's development .
Dirce - Means "broken in two." Reflects Draco being torn in two directions between family (dark magic, blood purity) and Harry (redemption and reconciliation for past wrongs).
Discordia - Means "discord, strife." Given the premise that Lucius and Narcissa chose the name, one would have to assume that the implications of such a name went over their heads at the time. I think Draco/Discordia would stubbornly refuse to acknowledge the obvious etymology in a similar way to Hyacinth Bucket insisting her surname was pronounced "boo-kay" in "Keeping Up Appearances." It certainly fits the last few years for the Malfoy family by the time the fic is intended to start.
Dilys - Means "genuine." Has two namesakes in the universe already--a former Headmistress of Hogwarts who once worked at St Mungo's Hospital (healing magic being something Draco's original wand was well-suited to, in addition to more general themes of post-war healing) and a famous Quidditch player (one of the few things canon gives us as a genuine interest of Draco's that is independent of his rivalry with Harry, given the way he talks about it during their first meeting).
Doireann - Means "white daughter" or "sullen, tempestuous." Either is a great descriptor for fem!Draco. The latter just fits Draco regardless of gender presentation.
Domitia - Means "having been tamed." This could go in one of two ways. The first is that Draco/Domitia is going to have a rough start in the fic. This leads to a rather subdued Draco/Domitia for a while, which makes it seem like he/she has been tamed by the circumstances. Otherwise, it could refer to being "tamed" by falling in love and being in a committed relationship.

What should I name fem!Draco? Round 3
Diane
Dinah
Dione
Dionysia
Dior
I have 25 name options and every time I try to narrow it down I end up with more. I'm going to leave it up to the community. I'll do 5 rounds of 5 names each, then pit the top 5 against each other.
Keep in mind that for this AU, I intend for Lucius and Narcissa to pick both Draco's male name (Draco) and female name (TBD) at birth due to tradition and the effect that magic that can easily change a person's physical sex has on society's development.
Diane - Means "goddess." French variation of Diana. I love Draco and French stuff. Diana is the Roman variation of Artemis, who is also associated with Hecate, goddess of magic and witchcraft. She could also be a patron of families, reflecting the importance of family to Draco.
Dinah - Means "judged." This fic would take place post-war, and Draco is going to be judged for his participation in it, even after the legal system is done with him/her. This name could reflect that.
Dione - Means "goddess." Dione is a titaness in Greek mythology. She was goddess of the sea (which reflects Slytherin association with water) and magic, among other things.
Dionysia - This name relates back to the Greek god, Dionysus. There are a few ways to tie Dionysus to Draco in my story, but the main one that sticks in my head is the concept of Dionysus's femininity and androgyny. Also, it's a pretty, fancy, name that sounds like something a pureblood might be called.
Dior - Means "golden." Calls to mind luxury and fashion. Also potential for humor with the revelation that this is the name of a Muggle fashion brand. Draco/Dior would be horrified.

What should I name fem!Draco? Round 2
Demetria
Denise
Desdemona
Despoina
Diana
I have 25 name options and every time I try to narrow it down I end up with more. I'm going to leave it up to the community. I'll do 5 rounds of 5 names each, then pit the top 5 against each other.
Keep in mind that for this AU, I intend for Lucius and Narcissa to pick both Draco's male name (Draco) and female name (TBD) at birth due to tradition and the effect that magic that can easily change a person's physical sex has on society's development.
Name meanings/justifications:
Demetria - This name comes from the Greek goddess, Demeter. Honestly, I don't have much to relate the meaning back to Draco. I am not especially well-versed in Greek mythology, so the best I can do is Demeter's dual nature as death and fertility goddess reflects Draco's dual nature as an ultimately good person on the dark side, but that's a stretch. Mostly, it's just a pretty name that has fancy pureblood vibes.
Denise - This name comes from the Greek god Dionysus. I liked this for Draco because of references to Dionysus's feminine traits and androgyny. I'm sure there are other, better examples in Greek mythology, but we're sticking with a "D" theme, so here we are. It's also one of the more common names on the list.
Desdemona - Means "ill-fated". This is the name of the titular character's wife in Shakespeare's "Othello" and I saw a potential parallel with Lucius not approving of Draco's relationship but reluctantly accepting it. I don't intend this to be a tragedy, so a Draco with this name would end up much happier than the original.
Despoina - Means "mistress". It was the epithet for several Greek goddesses, including Demeter and Persephone, which brings us back to the dual nature argument from Demetria. It also refers to an otherwise unnamed daughter of Demeter and Poseidon, which links us to water, the element associated with Slytherin House. Hecate, goddess of magic and witchcraft, was also called this. So was Aphrodite.
Diana - Means "goddess." Diana is the Roman equivalent of Artemis, but she is also associated with Hecate, goddess of magic and witchcraft. Diana could also be considered a patroness of families, which reflects the importance of family to Draco.

What should I name fem!Draco? Round 1.
Dahlia
Daria
Deianeira
Deirdre
Delilah
I have 25 name options and every time I try to narrow it down I end up with more. I'm going to leave it up to the community. I'll do 5 rounds of 5 names each, then pit the top 5 against each other.
Keep in mind that for this AU, I intend for Lucius and Narcissa to pick both Draco's male name (Draco) and female name (TBD) at birth due to tradition and the effect that magic that can easily change a person's physical sex has on society's development .
Name meanings and justifications:
Dahlia - Named for the flower, which was named for a scientist. There are a lot of floral names in HP; this one happens to be dramatic and start with "D", so I thought it suited Draco.
Daria - Means "possessing goodness". This is meant to reflect how Draco is a good person underneath all of the spoiled brat and dark magic. Alternatively, you could look at Harry as "goodness" and Draco possesses "him", that is, his heart.
Deianeira - Means "man slayer". This is meant to be ironic since Draco is really, really not a man slayer. It's also got fancy, pureblood name vibes. I could see Lucius picking this name for the meaning.
Deirdre - Means "daughter". This one just amuses me to picture Lucius and Narcissa looking at their fresh baby boy and going, "Well, it's not very likely that he'll need the female name. This one means 'daughter.' If she ends up a girl, that's what she'll be--our daughter. Yeah, that works."
Delilah - Means "delicate, weak, languishing". This one makes me think of all of Draco's dramatics. She's not necessarily any of those things, but she sure does like to pretend she is the moment things stop going her way.
