what you experience is hyperfixation, which is pathological. what I experience is psychosexual obsession, which is also pathological, but in a darkly chic and subversive way. thank you for understanding.

to celebrate the Sonic IDW comics catching up to Frontiers in the timeline, I'll be doing a reread/liveblog of the comic's entire run!
I LOVE Sonic IDW and have read the whole thing multiple times before, but this time I'm making it everyone else's problem 💪 join me for lots of gushing and some analysis and random thoughts, if you want!
starting night 9 on this absolutely blessed visual. I just adore the Chao races story, not least of all because this art style is just so cute. the lines are so soft and that almost crayon-y texture for the colors gives such a warm, cozy vibe ... after the metal virus arc and Bad Guys, the next few issues just feel so pleasant. time for pastel colors and PUPPIES !!!!
I know. I KNOW. the intent is "Shadow isn't surprised to see Rouge here, because of course she's on her way to rob that rich guy." but I swear to god the first time I read it I thought he was like "AND NOW AMY WON'T EVEN HIT ME WITH HER CAR. I CAN'T RELY ON ANYBODY ON THIS EARTH"
side-note, but whoever decided to send the OG girl trio off on their own little A plot together has the fast pass to heaven forever, no if's no but's, what a blessing!! so cute !!! color matching off the charts !!!
fuck yes nasty old man time !!! I don't talk about Clutch as much as I do Starline, Surge and Kit, because he's just not as layered, but he's way up there with them as one of my absolute favorite comic-exclusive villains. I just love his old gangster swag, he's so cool
also, something I think is super neat about how the comic's rogues gallery is handled is that all the villains are part of this whole little eco system with Eggman as a keystone species. Clutch scavenges materials from his failed conquests. Starline starts off working for Eggman, before becoming independent and recycling much of his technology, same as Clutch. Mimic's mercenary lifestyle was shaped by the Eggman War. Rough and Tumble take advantage of communities left weakened after Eggman's attacks. even when another villain is the big bad of one specific arc, their motivations and methods are heavily shaped by the ultimate series-wide big bad, and it works really well! it keeps Eggman's presence constant even when he's benched for a while, and ensures he retains his title as the franchise's main antagonist. these comics are so fckn gooood
[taps page] fast pass. to. heaven.
I'm not saying they should've let Shadow stay dead after Adventure 2 because truly who would we be as a culture without Shadow the Hedgehog, but what I AM saying. is that the early version of Heroes where Team Rose consisted of Amy, Rouge and Cream lives rent free in my mind. they've got like an Ed, Edd 'n Eddy schemer/lawful/follower comedy trio thing going on here and it's so so endearing, let's teach the 6 y/o to rob people, c'mooooon
Belle's here! and Tails is being a little nerd! it's a fun character detail that Belle reacts to his geeking out in a shy-but-friendly manner. meanwhile in CrossWorlds when he talks to Sage in a similar way, she gets angry and defensive. it makes sense - Sage had to fight for her personhood, while Mr. Tinker likely always treated Belle like she was a living being, so she isn't as self-conscious about her artificial nature.
I can't wait for Belle and Sage to meet in next month's issue, it sounds like they're going to do some really interesting stuff with their whole "estranged sisters" situation!
really fun how you can tell they switched up the art style for this issue, seemingly for the specific purpose of making these two look more intimidating as they turn the tables. the dramatic poses and higher detail looks so good !!
Maria: Shadow please promise to protect everyone on Earth, give them a chance to be happy
Shadow: oki [as soon as he's out of the room] haha siiiike that sounds like boring shid [rollerblades coolly] murder murder murder murder murder yayayay
I like to imagine the lil Shadow Chao here, the one Clutch used to train, is the same one that appears alongside Shadow in so much of his older official Sonic Channel art. I have no evidence for this except for this scene where he gives them an apple + the feeling in my heart, but I want it to be true. he must've gotten them from somewhere. maybe they followed him home after this scene :']
love these panels so much. unfortunately even as he's moving down the pipeline from sympathetic villain -> unsympathetic villain, he remains so funny and charming ...
I'd never criticize someone for disliking Starline's queer coding - no matter how you spin it, he does play into the stereotypical depiction of an effeminate gay supervillain - but just speaking for myself personally, I think the way it's handled is so deeply lovable. unlike the more classic depiction of effeminate villains (creepy, dissonant, predatory, pathetic), there's a clear attempt to use Starline's queerness to humanize him. his sincere devotion to Eggman is the closest he gets to truly valuing someone else, his theatrical flair and little mannerisms make him come off charismatic and powerful. in the short scene above, he's home alone(-ish), doing normal person stuff that grounds his character in mundane problems that are funny only because they're so shockingly innocent compared to the kinds of contexts we usually see him in. to me, his queerness feels like a sort of counterweight to all the evil he does - yes, he's one of the worst villains around, but he's still a person with thoughts and feelings and a broken heart and mundane problems and a goofy little live, laugh, love mug on his desk where he does his evil planning.
I think it really shines through how much the writers love this character and want the audience to relate to him through these little moments. his queerness makes him more likeable and more relatable, not less. he's a queer character for queer people.
not too dissimilar to what I was talking about regarding Zavok yesterday, where I think interpreting him as gay rounds out his characterization in a way that makes him feel much more human.
anyway anyway anyway signing off for tonight, thank you all for reading along, you're da coolest <3333
