((Sometimes... sometimes I remember I got Ribbon Cookie.

Tiny little cookie living in a mountain community heavily based on rural Appalachia and the mountains across Wales, Ireland, England, and Scotland. Essentially the kind of cultural meld that would have taken place if the mountain ranges irl never separated.

Her storyline is that she's an outcast in her little town due to rumors that she's a changeling; the forests and mines are inhabited by magic beings referred to as bogies, hobgoblins, house spirits, and a variety of other names, but you know the type. This wouldn't have been a problem fifty years ago, but not today. Not after the mine collapse.

The town was once a prosperous boom town for mining, but over time it had dwindled to a stable and steady population. The miners worked in tandem with creatures called Tommyknockers; in this universe, a distant cousin to Sugar Gnomes that live underground in caves and mines. They had a mutual respect and symbiosis, where the miners offered them tools and food in exchange for guidance to good deposits and warning if a shaft was about to collapse. The day of the Black Walnut Mineshaft Disaster, the Tommyknockers were silent. The whole shaft caved in, taking 16 good cookies with it. The town never recovered. Believing the friendly creatures they once trusted had betrayed them, the remaining townsfolk began ignoring them in return and driving them out of their lives. Now, even seeing one is considered bad luck. The mine was sealed and now very few residents remain.

Those who do remain are under the thumb of the Black Walnut Shortbread family. They owned the mine, and though its collapse put a dent in their fortune, they seem to do fairly well for themselves. The mayor has been in their back pocket for years, but even he doesn't know just how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Ribbon Cookie is the daughter of a town resident and a traveling con man who came through town one day and charmed a grieving single mother. So she was sort of born persona non grata due to that. Being hella autistic and ADHD, plus a strange incident that happened when she was a toddler (she was gravely ill for three days and apparently she was never the same after the fever broke), it was widely rumored that she was a changeling.

There is. So much lore for why the mine collapsed, what's going on. There are betrayals, sabotage, possible murder, secret children, and messy unhealthy crushes.))
