No I agree with you, his g shock look was amazing and realistic and now they've ironed his face out again :/ and I feel like noodles design and personality is getting very "generic young woke gal who likes to party" with none of her brilliant oddness, tomboyness and eloquence she had before. The characters are becoming less nuanced I guess? For easy marketing I suppose, which is depressing, cos that's what they were against originally

Easy marketing, lazy writing, trying too hard, who knows. Probably a mix of different things.

But to keep things a bit positive, a tip to anyone feeling frustrated: the best cure in situations like this, I’ve found, is to just hang on tight to your own headcanons and the parts of canon that you like. You can say it’s almost a requirement with stories that has gone on for decades on and off, and on top of it has had different writers working on it. Timelines and plots are inevitably going to get muddled and characters are going to change (sometimes for better, sometimes for worse). So you’re going to have people claiming something is canon and then realise there’s two versions of that specific detail or storyline and just have to pick which one to follow. In a weird way, there’s freedom there and at least makes me feel lighter when I look at it that way.

To share my favourite headcanons, (more like canons that kinda got lost during the years), are gross and self-absorbed 2D, somewhat socially awkward but extremely intelligent Noodle, “I’m gonna break your bones if you don’t give me back my eel” weird Russel, and most importantly extremely short (and eternally compensating for it) Murdoc.

Just thinking of those makes me smile and I will simply ignore everything that contradicts those. I’m just really too old to be angry about media that I don’t actually need to consume y’know? Gorillaz has given me some pretty fun times in the past and I’m just happy for that.

Murdoc looks so smooth and green in the song machine videos, I'm so confused and amused by it. He's supposed to be in his 50s and could pass for 20s/30s in these videos. And all I could think of is "Dermatologists HATE him!! Local sour pickle turns back the clock with this one weird trick!" And it's his deal with the devil or drinking that poisonous stuff, or whatever he found works but also turns your skin bright green. Skincare king

I know right? I’m really bummed they’re not continuing with the look Murdoc had in G-Shock, I loved that you could really see his age. He’s been smoking and drinking since he was like 12, that skin has seen things. I shudder to think what kind of toxins he’s injecting himself with to get that baby skin lmao.

Anyway, now that we’re on the topic, it’s strange how literally ever since phase 3 / phase 4 all the characters have stopped ageing. I don’t know if they’re going for the “Gorillaz is forever so they can’t age” thing now, but it makes them feel so much more plastic and 2-dimensional than before. Remember the good days of Murdoc with beerbelly and asspimples, or his manic look during Plastic Beach? Ah, those were the days. Those imperfections and details were big part of the characters and now we get these plastic faces. I especially hate 2D’s eyes going randomly white, the black eyes were key part of his story. I really wish Jamie would bring them back. Oh well.
