It's her seven days back , and she had just simply asked Jack to come to New York to see her instead of flying from JFK to Pittsburgh . They'd gone around NYC , her first time seeing everything , and had dinner at one of the craziest restruants she'd been too in her lifetime . Hand in hand they went from store to store , building to building just exploring everything and for the morning they were just them . She'd come back tanner , freckles popping up on her pale shoulders from the harsh sun . She worried her skin wasn't as soft , her hair less shiny , but he didn't blink once .

The afternoon was spent in bed , tracing lines that hadn't been forgotten by time , ordering room service for dinner . She thought it would have been harder , not seeing the rest of her friends , but at night she longed for this .

❝ I know I do , ❞ she whispered against his lips , as they breathed in one another as the sun began setting through the window of their high rise hotel . It's the first time she's acknowledged the heavy weight of the ring on her dog tags , she'd never taken it off despite being scolded multiple times by Marney . She'd die with it on , if that was the case . She knew what to do , grab it and return it to him with her body .

With careful hands she unlatched her tags , lifting them from her chest until she could deposit the ring in her palm . She hadn't worn it on her finger , not even though she ached to , but without him there it didn't seem right .

Carefully she held her palm up to him , ❝ Jackie , put it on me .❞

It's not unusual for her to get the call , it's hailing , and so she's pulled up to their residence in oceanside . She's only been a few times , normally keeping the interactions far from their home turf , she'd rather have been at one of the many spots they had set up incase , but when Craig had called stating they'd been in an accident she quickly pulled on a hoodie and grabbed her bag . Her father had reminded her gently last time that if they'd call she'd go , it didn't matter if it was during work hours or at three in the morning . Each time she ran like a dog for Smurf , it was money knocked off of his bill .

She'd fixed the first two jackasses up at one of her previous locations, and avoided Craig's wandering hands before she shoved medication down their throats , but when they had said Pope had gotten it bad she'd rushed them out . So , she had been sent to their house , told to go through the sliding glass door .

❝ Pope ! ❞ she called , sliding open the door to the kitchen . She wasn't stupid , sneaking up on someone like one of them . ❝ It's Doctor Hale , uh , your brother's sent me ? ❞ It's not a question , but it comes out like one . She doesn't want to wander around their house anymore than she has to to find him .

It's blood that catches her eye , and quickly she knows she's headed in the right direction . That made her stomach lurch with dread , she'd seen the house once before , but only the backyard and it was immaculate . Hardly a thing out of place then . He'd rarely been her patient , only a few times had he allowed her to care for him—not like the other two .

❝ Pope ? ❞ She called again , softening her voice . Shit . That was a lot of blood . ❝ It's Igraine , I'm—your brother's sent me , I'm here to help . ❞

She was tired of falling apart on Jack . Sometimes it felt like he didn't trust her to do the same for him . It had been something she'd brought up in therapy , the second time now after a few months . How she'd felt so inadequate because she couldn't offer the same to him. She didn't wish for him to break down , didn't want him to go through it , but his bad days seemed so few and far between .

❝ But , you trust me too , right ? ❞ she questioned , voice soft when she looked up at him . Her fingers found his shirt , gently gripping the edges anchoring herself to him .

It's a partnership , and sometimes she feels like he's just taking care of her . ❝ I'm not so broken that I can't hold you too . I can always hold you . ❞ You are safe to be vulnerable with me . I won't make it about me , rings through her head . She could hold him , gather everything and keep them together if needed . He'd gone through every storm , navigating them both to the other side with such ease it was like he knew her own mind better than she knew it herself .

She turned her face into his hand , pressing her lips against his palm . ❝ Sometimes it feels like you're scared I'll break , but I won't . I want to shoulder your burdens too . ❞

Honestly, Lexie wasn't entirely sure how to explain what her nightmares were about to her friend. She didn't talk about everything that had happened before she transferred to ptmc. Really, she wasn't sure she wanted everyone to know her business - everyone back home did and it had been too much. Getting handled with kid gloves was... uncomfortable at best. Dangerous at worst.

"It's not even scary anymore." She admitted, fiddling with her gifted glass of wine. "It's just... terrorizing me. I wish there was a magical medical fix for PTSD, but there's just... not. Which is rude, honestly." Lexie wet her lips. "I... was sort of in a plane crash. Before I came here." She admitted. Okay. Half the story to start was fine.

Igraine sat and listened , eyes widening slightly at the plane crash , jesus she thought flipping her and then getting blown up by an IED was scary . She was almost knocked out most of the time , and she had no clue what was going on , but to know you might die was scary . ❝ That's pretty fucking terrifying , I can't lie . But , bad ass , Lex . ❞

❝ You clearly survived that shit . God , do I wish there was a medical fix for PTSD besides therapy and talking your brain off a cliff , ❞ she shook her head. It would have fixed everything for her .

She turned , pulling her shirt down by her shoulder , revealing the burned skin from her upper arm to Lexie , ❝ IED blew up my Humvee . Almost took my arm from me . So , from one badass to another . Own it . ❞ She doesn't talk about it with just anyone . Hell , normally it's just the other veterans she knows , because they get it . How you become disfigured in war and fight with the demons . But Igraine goes secret for secret .

The lazy grin that appeared on her face meant it was worth it , when she heard his voice cut through the crowd . She gave Andrea a quick wink , it wasn't that she liked to make Jack mad , but there were advantages to it , ❝ That's my ride ! ❞ she sang from on top of the bar table .

She whipped around on the table , turning to look for him in the crowd , a large grin spreading across her face when she finally saw him striding through the throng of dancing bodies . ❝ Jack , I missed you ! I need help getting down , ❞ she smiled and held her hand out for him . She had made sure she had worn the dress he really liked for the night .

and he doesn't ask. because it's not his place to push for things she's clearly not ready to talk about. and this was not how he wanted her to talk about it. she'd been forced to spill so many things she wasn't ready to already. instead he just listens and fortunately he's capable of reading between the lines and piecing things together. though he doesn't assume anything, he figures he has a pretty good idea of the way that she grew up just from the few things he had learned.

"babe, you're not your brother or your parents. and yeah of course I love my kid, but I know that's not always how it works. and you deserved better." this wasn't the time or place for the conversation at hand, but honestly the universe doesn't seem to care about all of that.

closing the distance between them is easy even in the florescent trauma room. hands replacing her own in the steady movement from shoulder to elbow. "it is easy, babe. one of the easiest things I've ever done. and this," he tips his head towards the room they no doubt put her brother in. "this is just another day, Ig. everyone has a backstory and nothing says you have to be proud of it."

"I got this, okay. wherever you gotta go, go. up to surgery. up to the roof. I'll let you know when the coast is clear. and if they're gonna be here for a while I'll get Regan to come pick you up or something, okay?"

It isn't the worst thing that's happened in the ED . But thinking of her parents being there , or even being around Jack , enrages her . They don't get to be in her life , she had set that boundary the day she packed up and left . She'd only kept in contact with her brother , because he was another product of them , he was predestined by their bad genes and behavior . Then he chose addiction and kept choosing addiction .

She's nodded dumbly at him absorbing everything he's telling her . ❝ I don't want you to have to deal with them , ❞ she means it in earnest . There's nothing they can do to Jack realistically , not in a hospital where he's in charge and their son is lying in a bed probably overdosed . It's the aftermath she's afraid of when it comes to them , the emotional rollercoaster of manipulation they try to put everyone through . It makes her look crazy .

❝ They know I work here it might not be easy if they start demanding to know where I am , ❞ she supplied and leaned her forehead against his shoulder taking a deep breath . Another part of her is afraid he'll see where she comes from , and she knows she's talked a little about her childhood , but it's the tip of the iceberg . She's a mutt , and her parents are vile .

❝ Say it again , ❞ she lifted her head to look him in the eyes . ❝ I don't want it tainted by them and then I'll let you go . ❞

The streets were dark with the exception of the lamps and various floats that passed them . The vacation to New Orleans for the weekend of Mardi Gras was exactly what they needed . Being liquored up meant Igraine was a lot less tense , and with Cass right next to her she was down right fun . There were so many people throwing beads , and they hadn't a single one , she acted before she thought , lifting her thin t-shirt up flashing the float .

She heard her full government name and turned to Cass , caught , she flashed a quick grin that landed somewhere between innocent and entirely unconvincing . The beads were thrown , one already hanging around her neck , when she pulled her shirt back down and pulled the other that had landed in her hair to give to Cass . ❝ oops ? do you want the purple one or the green ? ❞

"first of all, i love that show," andrea says, a light laugh slipping out. "i think my version of losing it in the walk-in would probably be a mental breakdown up on the roof." she huffs out another small laugh, shaking her head. "you're not wrong. i definitely like things a certain way." a beat, then softer, a little more sincere: "and . . . thank you. that actually means a lot." it felt nice to be recognized for her work, especially by someone that meant a great deal to her. "we're lucky having a doctor like you on staff."

at igraine's admission, andrea's posture shifts almost imperceptibly, angling a little closer. there's no pity in her expression. just quiet understanding settling in. "you know, i host family dinner at my place every couple of weeks. my little brother's coming home next week for a few days. you should come. i could teach you how to make cochinita pibil. that's without a doubt the best thing my mom would make." the nostalgic smile lingers on her lips. "it's basically this slow-roasted pork dish. it's marinated in citrus juice and ugh . . . so good. i think you'll like it."

there wasn't many people she could get this deep with. andrea preferred listening to other people. she was better at that. she never really knew how to initiate conversing about her own stuff. she didn't want to bother people with it. it was different with igraine. she gave her the courage to speak up. this might've been a downer of a conversation for any other duo on a girl's night . . . but andrea didn't mind it. "i mean . . . i think laving something better behind is the whole purpose. there has to be a reason we have to experience life's bullshit. and dude, when you die as an elderly woman years and years from now, peacefully in your sleep . . . you're leaving a whole lot of good behind. trust me."

She hoped she'd be half the doctor that Jack or Robby were , and so she took it as a compliment that Andrea thought the ED was lucky now to have her . ❝ You're welcome , I mean it . I don't think we'd get out of half of of the shit shows get into without people like you and Dylan . ❞

Igraine sets her glass down , head tilted at her ask . It's not that they'd never shared a meal , but she hadn't ever been invited by anyone before to sit down to a family meal . ❝ Uh , yeah absolutely ! I would really love that and to meet your little brother's so I can brag to them about how amazing their big sister is , ❞ the grin that settles over Igraine's face cannot be contained . No amount of honing her expression can dampen how wide her grin has become . ❝ That sounds really delicious , cochinita pibil , ❞ the word is foreign on her tongue , but she knows some spanish from being in the army .

❝ Unless you're the lady from the titanic and you get to eighty four years old and drop the whole ass hope diamond in the sea , ❞ Igraine smirked . ❝ But yeah , I think I just want to do something good . I don't know I think it's weird but my goal in life is just to have a family . I didn't have one growing up , or a good one . ❞

It's not that she's traditional , far from it , she doesn't have a dream of a white picket fence . She just wants a family. ❝ I feel too sober for this , ❞ she giggled .
