Fight tooth and nail
I think we all know that after the men and women in office who are enabling these laws RETIRE or DIE, they will be replaced by people in my generation (millennial) and the generations that come after mine. No matter how many states pass these laws, even if the Supreme Court is able to overturn Roe v Wade, we know that once my generation is in office we will fix this SHIT SHOW of a world we have been left with, politically and environmentally. This doesn’t mean I won’t fight tooth and nail to prevent this UNWARRANTED and UNETHICAL attack on women.
But let’s say the worst happens. The likelihood is that these politicians have at least 10-20 years of governing years left. I’m 25 and fertile. There is a very real possibility here that I could be FORCED to give birth to a baby before I’m ready. My boyfriend (whom I love and know would support me no matter what) can sleep easy at night knowing that there is nothing that could possibly hold him back in his life or in his career except his OWN fuckups. Maybe we fuck up and I get pregnant. There is NOTHING LEGALLY BINDING HIM TO ME OR THAT POTENTIAL BABY. He has no LEGAL repercussions. MORALLY, yes. Morally, he might not want me to exercise my current (if limited) right to abort a fetus. We would talk about it. But ultimately he understands and RESPECTS that it’s MY body and my call.
Fine. Say we’ll wait. We’ll wait until these old curmudgeons die or get voted out and we’ll SWARM the political swamp in DROVES and give women our rights back. But guess what? That will probably be past my fertile window. I know I’ve flip flopped a lot about the kid thing today. I’m 25. Right now it’s OK for me to be unsure about being a mother. But in 2020, a lot of lawmakers have ALREADY DECIDED for other flip floppers.
And don’t give me that adoption bullshit. Just because you’re not raising that child you gave your body to for 9+ months doesn’t mean you’re not a mother.
