You didn’t really have a choice when I came to live with you guys, but you’ve been great to me.  You and Alex have felt more like my parents than my parents ever did.  You’ve put up with so many of my teenage hormones, meltdowns, and catastrophes, and you’re probably not done yet.  At least you’ll be plenty prepared when Tori reaches her teenage years.  I guess what I’m trying to say is thank you, for everything.  Thank you for showing me the love I feel I missed as a child.  Thank you for loving me so much that you get frustrated when I do things that harm myself or others.  Thank you for being here for me, and my brother, and for giving me an amazing little sister.

“I don’t need to rest.  I need to take care of my family, and one way I take care of them is by making dinner,” I assure him.

And this is where we disagree.  I lean over and kiss his cheek.  I pat his thigh.  “I am going to go down and start dinner.”

I nod my head in agreement as my list begins to compile the list of everything she will need for college.  “She’s living in the dorm at school,” I insist.  It may be the last bit of control we have, and it isn’t going to do anything, but she needs the experience.  “She’s still a little girl,” I whisper.

“Why don’t you talk to her and figure it out?” I suggest.  It would give him something to do and keep me from having to manage this because I don’t think I can.  “A trip would be good.  Maybe a summer aboard before school so she could find herself?”
