keeping the division alive and functioning was a feat, to be sure, but, with the help of the fifth seat, she managed. she wasn't sure how, but she did. she was skilled enough to be given the title temporary captain, even having to demonstrate her own imperfect bankai to the other division captains. being the permanent captain wasn't in her current goals, and she made sure that was clear to the head-captain commander. she didn't want to run it indefinitely, forever, but she would do everything within her power to run it as best as she could.
despite her efforts, some areas of the barracks had withered, the main eyesore being akane's garden. it was large and beautiful during her time within the division, but upon her defection with the traitor captains, it began to die. tsuneko tried, and tried, spilling helpless tears over the decaying rose bushes and carnations, desperate to keep them vibrant and new, but she failed. in the end, it wasn't something she allowed herself to linger on, simply letting the garden fade away until it felt like a distant memory in her heart.
had he of been there, would things be different? would the division still be lively and bright? somehow, since the disappearance of hirako, shinji, the fifth never felt like home to tsuneko. never felt like a place she belonged. aizen had changed it, shaped it into what he wanted it to be. the third seat didn't necessarily hate it, but she wasn't fond of how things were done, or how often aizen was missing from his post. she tried to shape her own way of leading after hirako, but had she failed at that, too? she wasn't personable like he was, she had a difficult time showing she cared for others ( at least, those she wasn't close with, like her family or akane ) and she could be a little strict with orders. would he be proud of how she ran it?
she was informed that a returning face would be taking over as fifth's captain, and she vaguely wondered whom it could be -- but she wasn't always the best with names and faces, with many of them blending together or being lost to her entirely. many of the officers had questioned her about them, and she wished she had more information to give them, but she fell short, and, in the end, managed to get more than a little overwhelmed, retreating to the captain's quarters for some quiet.
the incoming spiritual energy tingled the back of her neck, sending a familiar shiver across her spine, though it radiated differently throughout her nerves. it felt like she was intimately aware of the person it belonged to, yet they also felt like a stranger, and her curiosity burned brightly. as it approached, she readied herself for a knock at the door, but it never came. instead, she was met with a sudden burst of energy, causing her hairs to stand on edge, and she turned, silver hair temporarily blocking her vision before everything settled.
hirako. she almost couldn't believe her eyes, seeing him standing before her again after what felt like too fucking long. it made the corners of her lips twitch upward subtly -- though she was only mildly thrown off by his short greeting.
" welcome back, hirako-taichou, " the third seat greeted after a pause between them, feeling a familiar warmth bursting within her chest as she spoke his name and title for the first time in what felt like millennia, " they... didn't tell me who was taking over. but i'm... i'm glad that it's you, " tsuneko turned to fully face the blond, bowing towards him deeply, allowing her smile to completely form on her features, " i look forward to the future with you as our captain. please, take care of us. "
