I guess I never really faced my fears before
People who call El âJaneâ starter pack
- They claim to have a deep understanding of her character but this understanding is as deep as a puddle and does not extend beyond calling her Jane and hating Mileven
- âSheâs such a Pinkie Pie and Mabel Pines variant! đ„șâ (literally only saying this for the purpose of Willel siblings, completely mischaracterising her as thatâs her polar opposite)
- Claim sheâd be extremely supportive of Byler immediately, and would have 0 issues at first with finding out Mike didnât actually love her romantically, because of course sheâs not allowed complex âimperfectâ emotions or reactions to things that would inconvenience male characters
- Reduce her to a silly, overly childish, energetic loud and bubbly unicorns and rainbows persona- view it as just giving her whimsy- and ignore the fact that watering down a female character who is flawed, layered and does in fact have emotional issues, problems and complexity because thatâs âtoo much to handleâ, and so making her this sanitised joyful pinkie pie that has 0 semblance to her actual character, is just misogyny, especially since itâs always paired with them allowing the males in the show to be complex and flawed in their characterisations (including males who El in canon is more complex than. So both Mike and Will)
- Act like Willel are canonically close and would dump Mike for each other, and donât stop to ponder that if they were actually girlboss besties, they probably wouldnât have to almost exclusively use *behind the scenes* photos of *Millie Bobby Brown and Noah Schnapp* hanging out in their edits and posts of them
- Emphasis on exclusively basing their characterisation of El on behind the scenes photos of Millie in-costume, and acting like El has the same personality as her actor
- Says sheâs not ready for a relationship and then says Henderhop shouldâve got together
- Infantilise her to oblivion, act like she canât understand any complex ideas (even though she absolutely can, outside her limited vocabulary she is very intelligent)
- Make her speak in broken English like a 2 year old (by season 4, and even season 2-3 for the most part, sheâs speaking full sentences and has minimal struggle with her vocabulary. And she has also never spoken in broken English in a childish manner. Even in season 1, she was just mostly non verbal and would be quiet and speak in a more simple way, or ask clarification on what things mean. She was never a drooling baby)
- Solely blame Mike for not calling her Jane even though literally none of her friends and family aside from Kali did but they all get the pass apparently, Hopper only said it once when he was about to kill himself, and it is not an actual plot line in the show that she wants to be called Jane or has issues with her name, thatâs not even ever implied, thatâs just fanon

A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS â S01E06: The Morrow
âMileven is so restricting to El!â
El constantly makes choices for herself. If you watch the fucking show, I shouldnât need to go into detail about the decisions that she makes for herself.
âEl shouldnât have a boyfriend!â
Why shouldnât she have a boyfriend? Because sheâs traumatized? Because she was experimented on? Because she has powers? None of those erase her right to want connection.
âMike took advantage of El in Season 1!â
When they meet, Mike doesnât even know what she is.
He thinks sheâs a lost, traumatized kid. He hides her because he wants to protect her, not because he wants something from her. Their early connection is built on shared loneliness. Youâre a sick fucked up LOSER if you believe 12-year-old Mike Wheeler took advantage of her. I donât care if itâs not real life. Itâs a reflection of how you think IN real life.ïżŒ
WHY WOULD YOU SHIP HIM WITH WILL IF HE TAKES ADVANTAGE OF PEOPLE?
âMike never initiates anything with Elâ
HE KISSES HER FIRST IN SEASON 1. HE CALLED HER EVERY DAY FOR A YEAR. EJEJJWMEKEKWKSKDKEOEOEOEOWOWOWOW WATCH THE SHOW
âMike is only with El out of obligation.â
If obligation were the motive, he wouldnât panic at losing her. He wouldnât cross fucking states. He wouldnât spiral when he thinks she doesnât need him.
âEl is happiest without Mikeâ
She is happiest when she has autonomy and her loved ones. In Season 3 she asserts independence, dumps him, and later reconciles. Growth inside a relationship isnât the same thing as freedom from one.
âMileven shippers are all children!â
So fucking what? Teenagers literally run the internet. Stranger Things is popular with all age groups. Yâall are the same âadultsâ who wanted two teenaged boys to kiss. Donât ever forget when grown adults were on Twitter CRYING AND HARASSING THE DUFFER BROTHERS just because Byler didnât happen.
âMike worries more about his âbest friendâ than his own girlfriend.â
First of all.. FUCK YOU? IF YOU CARE SO MUCH ABOUT EL LIKE YALL CLAIM TO DO..
Why do yall cherry pick so much? Do yâall want Mike to hate his girlfriend?
Obligatory if OP doesnât like reposting let me know :)
But this is very true, very endearing.
And le gasp, theyâre two of my favourite ships.
mike & el as romeo & juliet / artwork by luh_strangerthings
"mike was so toxic to El!" "will was better to El!!" will was the worst, male centered pick me in the WORLD. First of all, while El was already going through the struggles of feeling different and isolated due to the amount of bullying she was going through. Yet will couldn't do nothing but say "I'm here for you" then not do anything, he didn't even try to tell joyce or jonathon, then when HER BOYFRIEND came to visit, and she was lying to Mike he basically said "since I have feelings for Mike and you're lying to him when he doesn't deserve to be lied to, I'm gonna make you feel bad about it and then disregard your feelings". What about that screams "good brother"? Then he legitimately only helped them with their relationship because he wanted MIKE to be happy and put MIKE'S feelings above his, then when he realized that while El was fighting to save Holly's life, he could possibly make a move on mike?? He practically JUMPED at the opportunity.
Will Byers is actually a bad friend to Mike (with evidence)
Disclaimer: This is not an attack on marginalized communities or peoples, this is a discussion about a fictional character
When people talk about Will Byers, especially in relation to Mike Wheeler, they always seem to have this very rigid stance on how Mike is the bad guy and Will is the innocent, blameless victim of Mikeâs awful behavior. This is so common amongst the fandom that you have tiktoks like this
And God forbid you said you liked Mike in 2022, they would tar and feather you on twitter.
But funnily enough, when you rewatch the show with open eyes, it actually feels more like the opposite is true, that Will can be just as, if not a worse friend compared to Mike, and can even be more in the wrong during those arguments.
As Mike himself asks, why is he always the bad guy in these arguments? Why does Will get away with bad behavior on account of his trauma as though every other character was on paid vacation over those years? Like Iâm serious, theyâll use the upside down as an excuse for anything he does.
Okay, enough talk, letâs look at the proof. In season 3, Mike and Will have their first argument. This argument is about how Mike is obsessed with El and doesnât care about him anymore.
On one hand, I understand why he feels left out, I am aware he is a teenager and I am aware of the trauma he went through. I get why he is jealous, and Iâve mostly cut him slack for this.
But the issue arises when Mike needs help to get El a gift. Look, I understand that he doesnât wanna do this, but at least try and be understanding, Mikeâs clearly stressed over here!
Again I cut him some slack, but it gets worse when El dumps Mike publicly in the mall parking lot, and the first thing out of Willâs mouth is âCan we play DND now?â
If I was Mike, I wouldâve cursed him out.
Like seriously?! El hasnât even left the parking lot! Your best friend since childhood, the guy who led the charge to rescue you from the upside down, who was there for you as you were losing your mind, who skipped out on arcade games and halloween for you, who cried as he begged you to fight the mindflayer, who said that the day he became friends with you was the best decision he made and you canât even spare him the slightest bit of empathy after he was publicly dumped?
And afterwards he proceeds to wake Mike up in cosplay to play a game Mike clearly did not want to play, without any thought for his feelings only to get angry when Mike is uninterested.
During the fight, Will asks Mike where Dustin was. People use this to make Will out to actually be the heart of the party (I am not lying, they used to say this in 2022). But itâs clear that Will doesnât care about where Dustin is, heâs just using him to make Mike look bad.
He has this aggravating belief that Mike should always be the Mike that he remembered, that Mike was not allowed to change who he was because Will liked the old Mike better, the one who paid attention to him all the time (kind of like how bylers view him).
And this isnât about the party growing up and leaving him behind, this is about Mike leaving him behind. Will doesnât care that Lucas has a girlfriend or that Dustin wasnât around, he doesnât hold them to those standards.
Will insults El and calls her âsome stupid girlâ in spite of knowing how much Mike liked her (Mike did talk to Will about El in the crazy together scene in season 2). Mikeâs insult on the other hand was not targeted in the way everyone thought it was but simply pointing out Wills lack of interest in dating, something he proudly mentioned a few hours ago
âA day without girls!â
Mike is forced to bike after Will and apologize, while Willâs lack of empathy continues âshe said she dumped your ass Mike, that doesnât sound like a break!â
In season 4, a rehash of this argument takes place after El is humiliated at the roller rink. Will brings up the fact that El was lying to him and Mike points out how he was ruining the mood. To be fair, Mike was kind of mean for that one, but he quickly drops it and returns to looking for El, in spite of the allegations of him fighting Will instead of finding her.
Will is the one who continues the fight, complaining about how he felt like a third wheel and how Mike never called him. On one hand, it sucks to be a third wheel, but you knew this was gonna be a date, you knew that Mike was staying for a week and you would have time to spend with him later.
Again he was aware this was gonna be a date and was surprised that Mike paid more attention to El. Fork found in kitchen I guess?
Will also blames Mike for not reaching out, even though he also had a phone, and couldâve called. And even if Joyce was hogging the phone, he couldâve wrote him a letter instead of moping about how El always got letters (maybe if you wrote him letters, he would respond to them đ€Ż).
Mike has a point when he asks âWhy am I the bad guy?â Because why is he always the bad guy? Why are his emotions and concerns always ignored by his oldest friend?!
Once again Mike apologizes for being âa colossal idiotâ
In season 5, Will decides to flirt with Mike after his parents are hospitalized, and his sisters and girlfriend are in the upside down.
And this is a recurring theme, the only time Will comforts Mike is when he is also talking about himself and telling Mike about his feelings indirectly. Will has always had an idealized, childish view of Mike that he did not have towards anyone else. From episode one, he is unwilling to hide the dice roll from Mike but is willing to cheat during the bike race with Dustin a few minutes later.
He doesnât see Mike smothering him in season two because he likes the attention Mike gives him while complaining about Lucas and Dustin, who barely smother him, if anything. He doesnât seem to even realize that Mike isnât himself and doesnât seem to care. He lashes out in anger when Mike pays more attention to El than him, and sulks when Mike doesnât call him immediately instead of calling him himself.
I donât hate Will as a character on his own but when he is with Mike, it seems like his worst traits are exemplified. He is a genuinely kind and generous person, but when heâs with Mike he becomes a needy, insecure loser.
POV: When the Duffers donât know what to do with your character arc so you become a homewrecker instead
Before you come for me, pitchforks in hand, you gotta admit that it was lazy writing to completely regress Steve and randomly reboot stancy right? Like, no matter how much you love Joe Keery, telling your ex, who you know is in a relationship with someone else that you dream of having six babies with her is red flag behavior. Steve is twenty years old, heâs not five, Nancy had every right to mock him, it was a completely crazy thing to do!
And not only that, but he doubles down on it, you cannot seriously be naive enough to believe that Steve stealing all of Nancyâs personal space was platonic, you cannot seriously think that Jonathan was just some bitter pothead, that it was all Jonathanâs fault for being a bad boyfriend
(insert ooc actions, like throwing away Nancyâs clothes or smoking pot when his family is living in the Wheelerâs basement-because nothing yells parentified child than being a lazy pothead when he spent his entire childhood taking care of his mom at their worst)
Bringing back Stancy killed Steveâs character development, it turned him back into King Steve and for some reason the narrative justifies it alongside his devoted fanclub
And as for Will, the entire season 5 was some sort of a humiliation ritual for him wasnât it?
Like youâd think that after Will had front row seats to the love monologue, he wouldâve caught on to the fact that Mike was completely uninterested.
But for some reason they drag it on. Never-mind the fact that he already played this game of âPick me, choose me, love meâ twice in a row and lost. But for some reason he decides to shoot his shot đ€Šââïž
Like, at this point you canât help but question why he is doing this to himself? Is he a masochist? Is it Vecna? Is Mike Wheeler that irresistible?
And also, as Iâve already said he tries to shoot his shot while his entire family is in the hospital instead of comforting his best friend since kindergarten. You know? The guy who was there for you when you were literally losing your mind?
Where oh where did the empathetic Will Byers go?
Duffer Brothers please bring him back I miss that Will đ
And I also miss season 3 Steve, so can you bring him back too? đ„čđ
The By1ers are getting dumber.
They want her to have said it to:
â Her very flawed dad.
â Her bestie who she mostly only knew during s3.
â Her toxic "sister."
â Her hatin' ass, triflin' ass step-brother.
â Eddie, Chrissy, Jason, Holly, Ted, Billy, Vicki, Patrick... apparently ANYONE but Mike! đ«©
Just my opinion.
I don't understand how people like the concept of El's ambiguous ending, isolated from the ones she loves most, especially when we know for a fact that she doesn't want that sort of life. She's already had to live in isolation for twelve years.
What's more upsetting is how it's not the first time we've seen El be separated from the others because of the government, which was set in between S1 & S2, she was forced to go into hiding in the woods. Where she had no access to food, no water, no clean clothes, no warmth, and no shelter. All while having to endure the freezing cold temperatures of winter.
She had no way of contacting or letting her friends know she was okay, she had no caregiver/parent she could rely on. At least not until Hopper started leaving eggos in the box. But besides the point El was out there for possibly months, (assuming by the sudden growth of hair she had when Hopper found her.)
She was very depressed during this era too, she had no idea if she was going to be able to see Mike or her friends again. She possibly already accepted the outcome of her situation. Which is why it's so cruel to think the duffers thought her dying or ending up alone would be the best ending for her character after all of this. Because we know for a fact that El only wants normalcy and peace with the people she loves most.
Both choices are horrible for her character. She is either dead or alive but not living. Only existing for the sake of survival. I refuse to even accept that poor writing for her character.
I hate it when people call Mike a misogynist red flag for daring not to see El as a machine in season 3 when everyone wants to use her for the mind flyer... Like... yeah... he's scared for her... that's normal. But why is it horrible when it's Mike, a literally traumatized teenager after believing El was dead for a year... And why is it perfectly normal when it's Hopper? Why is Hopper's real problematic behavior never addressed? The one that essentially caused Mike and El's breakup because he pushed Mike to lie to El, which led to their argument and Max's "advice" about a situation whose context she didn't actually know. The fact that the storytelling and the fans never really address Hopper's problematic behavior as a fully grown adult, and instead prefer to attack Mike, kills me. In addition, Mike learned in season 3 to completely trust Eleven's abilities, whereas Hopper never did and is still at the same point he was on the subject at the beginning of season 2.
bylers obsession with calling eleven jane is so ironic and fake as f*ck. saying that âno one called her jane before she died ughâ girl stfu she literally has introduced herself as el in the show. she clearly associates that name with her friends and family and a part of herself that was actually happy. itâs also quite literally taking away her identity by saying that just as they claim calling her âelâ is wrong. who told u that oh u made that up. why wouldnât her introducing herself as el be enough for u to stop writing essays on bullshit u DECIDED. yall dgaf about her. she is a complex character. also Kali had every reason to react to hopper that way bc she doesnât understand the dynamic with el and her family. itâs sad that she never got to be jane but thatâs her story and she has autonomy as el. she clearly doesnât have an issue being called el. you DECIDED she did. itâs actually hilarious that people donât realize how hypocritical they sound when they spew this nonsense. she was not just a weapon to mike and hopper maybe watch the show with ur eyes open next time and maybe make it less obvious u donât fw complex female characters. esp when they get in the way of your ship.
edit - also the show has shown us MULTIPLE times that mike does not just see her as a weapon so get off that too cus u are smoking that pipe
Also Iâm not calling El, JaneâŠ.
If you want to thatâs fine. However, why be mad when everyone calls her El? She never expressed distaste for being referred to as El or Eleven.
The season 3 scene with Billy is not talked enough.Billy is like âsorry I didnât quite catch your name.â And then she turns her head and gives a cold line âEl.â
Like that name is something she reclaimed. Itâs also why Dustin yelled out ELEVEN instead of Jane when sheâs faking her death,(and yes sheâs fucking alive donât even argue).
Legally her name is Jane Hopper. But at her core, she is El. Everyone who loves her calls her El/Eleven.
Kali calls her Jane because of her own trauma with the lab number assigned to her. She didnât reclaim it the same way El did, ( thatâs my theory anyways).
