trying to figure out realistic logistics for space elevator stuff on erid and jesus christ. a trip from the top (where the dock would be, past the rings, WAY into the exosphere) to the surface would like. realistically. take something like 5 earth days, if they went at a speed that would not kill grace. The logistics of feeding him, getting his oxygen to him, bathroom time, sleeping (!!!), all of it??? oh man. This is not a casual 3 hour trip. this is a fucking ENDEAVOR.
so! The limitations make constant trips up and down impossible. Let's work with the constraints.
This means Grace's ass is STAYING on the hail mary until they have his biodome ready, and they are scrapping as much of the Mary's internals on that same trip, because this is an undertaking they are doing as few times as possible.
This also means! That if rocky goes to the surface! He CANNOT come visit Grace on a whim!!!!!! Which has lots of potential story bits, trying to make their only meaningful contact be long distance radio call and making that work (poorly. the shenanigans... etc)
also the gravity flips around from one way at the top, to zero, to the other way at the bottom. It’s a whole thing.
there's just so much going on. Anyways I actually found a tool that does the math for you and my notepad and calculator attempts were pretty close.... it we imagine an elevator on earth.
Earth's radius is 6371 km. Erid has a radius of 12835 km. That is a much bigger planet! With a bigger atmosphere! And just eyeballing from a screenshot of the movie, Erid's rings (which would be around the equator, that's how they always form with very few exceptions) extend over 13000 km up.
All of this means if we imagine the docking for the elevator is at the counterweight station, it would likely be even farther than the previously imagined 100000 km distance from the surface of Erid! That is!!! SO FAR. That is longer than circling the globe twice. Moving from the surface to the top would take anywhere from 2 to 5 days moving between 1800 and 720 km/h. that is ridiculous. this is a ridiculous structure.
Of course, all of this rests on the space elevator being an as imagined on earth space elevator with long cables and a huge counterweight to make it stable. Maybe their 'elevator' really does work like one in a building. Maybe it's an enormous set of cargo elevators in some stupid huge tower that only reaches to like, geosynchronous orbit? And this thing, though the power of 'fuck you it's xenonite I don't have to explain SHIT', could be built anywhere on the planet, and would be below the planet's rings? Why not. It might be. How would this work? No clue! but it would make things easier and faster, that's for sure. A trip on this would take only 20 hours to 2 days at the same speeds as above.
An hey. Maybe Eridians can make something that moves faster than 1800 km/h continuously for 3 days with magnets or something. Who's to say? It's fiction, after all.
your tags encapsulate it. ANDY WHY RINGS GREENLIT.
Grace hearing they have a space elevator and being like waow so cool!!! and then it’s literally an anime tower to geosynchronous orbit is REALLY funny.
I think the space elevator could have a power cable built into its cable (urgh… the weight…) but you can also beam power at things with lasers, maybe they do that? They could have satellites (I guess a bit above and below the plane of the rings, pointed in at the space elevator cable running through the rings?) that blast the crawler’s receivers to power it. This would mean the crawler wouldn’t have to carry fuel for its own astrophage generator, just take lots of trips to refuel satellites.
It would also mean they’d need a whole ongoing space program but that’s pretty implied. Just maintaining the space elevator probably means they’ve signed on to a bunch of shit in orbit all reliant on and focused on the space elevator.
However, I think having any kind of traffic in orbit with astrophage/IR drives is INSANE. They must refine the ring asteroids for propulsion mass up there. They HAVE to. Like, it all runs on astrophage at the end of the day (maybe they would even be breeding astrophage up there off of asteroid mass if their oceans weren’t SO convenient) but you cannot be blasting around on DEATH LASERS for minor maneuvering when anyone else is anywhere nearby.
So actually… the rings are really good… because they can use them for propulsion mass (vaporize asteroids into gas, pressurize it, safely squirt their equipment and small craft around).
This also means the Hail Mary would be an ENORMOUS hazard (with its little maneuvering spin drives) so it probably has to be towed, once it comes in on a safe vector on its big drives.

My favorite Giuseppe Festino covers from near the end of his run with the Italian sci-fi magazine Robot. These are from late 1978 and 1979. Bold colors, bold compositions.
I featured Festino's work in my free sci-fi art newsletter a few issues back, so check it out for more info. The final one here, with the decaying robot, was for the last issue of the magazine, before it was rebooted in the 2000s.
Your dialogue is stiff because everyone is being too honest
Great dialogue can come from radical emotional honesty. But in most real conversations, people
dodge questions
answer indirectly
lie (badly)
change the subject
crack jokes to avoid serious answers
lie (convincingly)
say half of what they mean
tell the truth but get so anxious/angry/defensive others now think they're lying
If your dialogue feels unnatural, it might be because everyone is saying exactly what they think, or articulating their thoughts too well. Try letting characters hide things instead.
Subtext is where tension lives.
do you guys ever think rocky fantasizes about running his claws along grace's ribcage like it's an instrument
