I canât watch the episode live tonight, so in lieu of that, Iâm going to throw my hat into the âwhat alignment are the Mighty Neinâ ring, because I am getting tired of people saying theyâre evil when they are, by and large, just a bunch of well meaning chaotic fuckups.
Caleb: True Neutral. Thatâs a gimme, Liam said thatâs what his alignment is. What I find interesting, though, is the fact that he used to be Lawful Evil and that, traditionally, you canât step directly from Lawful Evil to True Neutral on the alignment chart, youâd have to make a stop at Lawful Neutral or True Evil along the way. I know some people have said that maybe his time in the asylum short-circuited that necessity, but I find that particular rule more fun to consider than a workaround.
Molly: Chaotic Good. While never specified, as far as I know, I think this one is still a gimme. Taliesin said that Molly adhered very strictly to their own personal code. With that in mind, considering two of their most famous/memorable lines are âBe the chaos you want to see in the worldâ and âI left every town better than I found itâ, Iâd say thatâs as good as an admission on both the Chaotic and the Good front.Â
Caduceus: Iâm also gonna say True Neutral - I think Taliesin is playing him very much in the style of early edition druids who could only be True Neutral because they were only beholden to the balance of nature as their ideal. That said, I think he could definitely lean towards Neutral Good, considering the open glee with which he dealt with the Iron Shepherds and the fact that he tried to dissuade the piracy situation last episode. Ultimately, I think heâs True Neutral because I donât think Caduceus thinks he knows enough about the world yet to truly know what is Good. He might get there in the end, though.
Beau: Chaotic Good. Probably started out the campaign as Chaotic Neutral, given her overall stance of âfuck the system I do what I wantâ and the fact that this has included mail fraud, breaking up marriages âjust because [she] couldâ, and attempted assassinations of political figures (who nevertheless deserved it in the case of Pucine, letâs be real). That said, recent events have definitely shifted her to Chaotic Good - sheâs not necessarily good at being good yet, but sheâs actively, consistently, and sincerely trying, and Iâd say thatâs enough to qualify.Â
Jester: Chaotic Neutral. She is utterly beholden to the Travelerâs teachings and the Travelerâs teachings seem to lean very much towards the idea of chaos for chaosâ sake, that chaos is its own reward, and the idea that chaos is a necessary part of the âbalanceâ of the world (and adhering to a âbalanceâ of ideologies is traditionally a very Neutral ideal). Otherwise, Jesterâs motivations - much like Calebâs - tend to be more personal, or relate more to what the group wants to do and what will keep the group safe than anything else. Unlike Beau, Molly, or Nott, she seems unconcerned with the idea of doing good for its own sake, because she is actively serving the ideals of chaos instead.Â
Nott: Chaotic Good. She steals due to what seems to be an active mental illness rather than malice, and has, famously, been the one most likely to call the group out on cruel or self-destructive behavior. Her desire to be good in defiance of what she views as a goblinâs fundamental nature has caused her massive amounts of heartache, pain, and trauma in the past. And, most notably, she tends to be the first one who tries to comfort or reassure bystanders that they rescue from danger, even if sheâs terrible at it. Much like Beau, sheâs not good at being good, but sheâs trying.Â
Yasha: Chaotic Neutral. Barbarians who follow the Path of the Zealot are vanishingly unlikely to be good-aligned as it is due to the nature of the gods that can âpresideâ over that specialization. The Stormlord is no exception there, as he is a Chaotic Neutral deity. Much like Jester, Yasha puts her devotion to her god above almost everything else, so it would make sense that sheâd share an alignment with him. She values her own personal freedom to come and go to an extreme degree, seems to concern herself with the Stormlordâs affairs and her own personal plans exclusively, and otherwise only throws in her lot with the Mighty Nein because she likes them personally.
Fjord:Â Not gonna lie, I have mulled over this one a lot, but fuck it, Travis, I will give you the benefit of the doubt when you say that Fjord is Lawful Good. Not in the traditional sense, obviously, not that he respects the law of the land, but that he values order, structure, and hierarchies as long as they serve the general good. He likes everyone to have a role, which I think weâre seeing now that theyâre back at sea. Most notably, his idea that everyone should work towards the good of the group has caused him to seriously clash with Caleb in the past, who - before recent events - was always more inclined to put his own needs and goals first as long as it didnât actively put any of the others in danger. I also think that innate deference to authority is making him tread more cautiously around Avantika than is warranted, but thatâs a meta for another day.Â
And, between the Knights of Requital and the Schusters, I think he was one of the first in the Nein to openly seek out and encourage the others to join in work that was solely for the sake of improving the lives of othersâ. Along with Beau and Nott, he is perhaps the most accepting of the simple fact that Good Feels Good and inclined to roll with it when he can.Â
