The problem with modern Trek is that there just aren't enough plotlines where kirk yells at the antagonist about how they suck because they have no love or compassion and then he goes back home to his ship & has a little philosophical debate with his friends while making heart eyes at spock

a lot of women in the 60s who watched star trek TOS looked at spock and said "he is a tortured gothic hero, can you imagine if all the intense devotion he has for his captain was aimed at you?" and turned him into a kind of cult sex symbol.

and while that is an incredibly correct take, it is even more galaxy brained that a bunch of other women independently, in the 1960s, looked at spock and went "he is a tortured gothic hero, can you imagine if all the intense devotion he has for his captain was actually acknowledged for the romantic love it so clearly is?"
