The white peachick’s words downright chafed Po’s heart  – although he didn’t know precisely what the little one was talking about, he could understand the sentiment. 

Po took one careful step towards him and crouched down to his level, so he – a big giant panda – wouldn’t seem as gigantic and intimidating to him. Po didn’t exactly know what to say; should he convince him that good things still existed or should he ask for more information...

Po cleared his throat and opened his mouth, but stayed quiet for a moment.  “Did... Did something happen?” He finally asked and looked at the young bird with a concerned expression on his face.

Fung- “I’m in charge. I’m in charge, now. I’m in charge!” [:3]

Po laughed and looked at the crocodile bandit with amusement. “Okay, buddy, first things first…” He scoffed. “You’re not in charge – I am”, he said and smiled mischievously.

Po had traveled across China and met a lot of people in his travels. He had witnessed a lot of things during his lifetime but never had he seen a wolf cry. As the one-eyed brute broke into tears, Po could feel his heart shatter into million tiny pieces. The wolf had hurt him in his past and caused him pain but Po wouldn’t do the same for him. The wolf reached for a helping hand and Po wouldn’t mind if he grabbed his chubby paw, no matter their gory past. 

Po didn’t hesitate – he wrapped his arms around the wolf so he wouldn’t have to stand alone. He had the perfect shoulder to cry against and, as he knew from experience, his thick panda fur could handle a lot of tears. 

Po petted the grey fur on Boss Wolf’s neck, hoping that it would soothe the battle scarred canid. 

“Shhh, it’s okay. Just let it all out”, Po said in a calm manner. “Everything’s gonna be fine.”

“It’s just a thought… During our lifetime, we meet and see many people; more than we can possibly remember – People from different backgrounds, people with different features, different goals in life. But there are still those who have something similar in them, something that makes you think they look and feel familiar. When you’ve lived long enough, you began to recognize certain types of people – people in distress, people lingering on hatred, people in love … And you might already know what they want, or what is to happen to them. It’s all in the eyes.”

Po was fascinated by the old master. His words never failed to amaze him, and even though he wasn’t entirely sure, what Master Shifu meant, he still had a tiny hunch what it was about. Sometimes Po just had to look at a customer at his dad’s noodle shop and he could tell that they were a lousy tipper... But maybe that had to do more with the looks and overall feeling of the person, not just the eyes. 

“You are so wise”, Po mouthed almost silently and looked at Shifu with awe. 

“Do you have this power? Like, can you look at someone’s eyes and see immediately what’s going on? Like, oh, I wanna know what you see in my eyes!” He bounced in excitement and crouched down a little bit so it was easier for Shifu to look at him straight in the eye. “Like, more than their beautiful jade green color”, he added.

The Soothsayer remained neutral-faced, somewhat exasperated. “Maybe you can learn how to stop preemptively griping before a point is fully made,” she shot back.

“But in all seriousness, one never really stops learning,” she explained. “People are a culmination of their experiences, and you’re still young. You’re only part of the way there.”

The Soothsayer was right. Po glanced down at his feet, being a bit embarrassed by his own shortsightedness. Why did this happen every time he had a conversation with a person who was much older and much wiser than him? 

Po listened to what the Soothsayer had to say. He looked at her with wonder as an excited little smile spread on his face. 

“Is  – is this “a lot to learn” something I can achieve at this pace?”  It wasn’t exactly a secret that Po had learned and mastered things that took years or even decades for a significant amount of other Kung Fu warriors to master.

“Or does that “part there” mean that I’m half-way through, or?” He asked and touched the back of his neck. “I mean... If I still got a lot to learn and I already achieved... stuff, so is it, like... Is there a possibility for me to learn new stuff in a short time or is it, like, thirty years of solitude... in a cave... with rocks... and, uhh  –  moss for dinner?” He paused and looked at the Soothsayer as if she was going to give him a blunt, non-enigmatic answer that he wouldn’t have to think about for the next two weeks in bed before falling asleep.

Po watched his dad go through the contents of the box once more. He could’ve sworn that the lantern was there but if it failed to materialize there thrice in a row, it probably wasn’t there. Po scratched his left arm and looked a bit uneasy... and a bit guilty. 

“Do we have any other boxes where it might be? What if it got mixed with some other stuff after the last Dōngzhì Festival?”

“Little bit more to it than that. You got a lot to learn.” (( soothsayer-musings ))

“What do you mean I ‘got a lot to learn’?” Po looked at the wise goat as if she just said that he was, indeed, a crocodile. 

“I am the Dragon Warrior. I have found inner peace… I mastered qi! What else could be there for me to learn?”

“If you live long enough, you see the same eyes in different people.” [mxstershifu]

Po looked at the old Master and nodded – slowly. “that... that’s some oogway-level stuff right there”, he mumbled and didn’t even expect Shifu to hear his words. 

“So, uhh... What does that mean? Is it like a new secret Kung Fu teaching that only the greatest Masters figure out, or..?” Po wasn’t entirely sure what he was asking or what he was expecting for an answer.

“I’m being torn apart. I want to be free of this pain.” (Wolf the boss)

“I –” Po started but stopped short. He didn’t really know how to react or what to say to the wolf. At the same time he felt uneasy, being in the presence of someone who had hurt him in the past, but somehow Po felt he should trust  the wolf on this. He reached for help and Po wasn’t the one to turn him down. 

“I know it’s difficult... But it gets easier. You’re not going to be chained to your pain for all your life.” 

“Do you... Do you wanna talk about it?”

“I didn’t lose it, dad”, Po said as if he was still a teenager ready to be left home alone for a few days. “I know where the lantern is! The... location of it, though, miiiight have slipped my mind.” 

“It’s not in the same box with the rest of the decorations?” He gave an apologizing smile.

          “ – The galaxy ??? Po, I’m trying my best not to think about the whole Universe breathing down our necks 24/7 so. Please.”

“Yeah, but if we don’t get these Mooncakes ready for the Mid-Autumn Festival, it’s gonna be my dads, Master Shifu, the rest of the Five and the whole Valley of Peace AND the Universe who are gonna breathe down our necks.”

“– So, if you could kindly decorate these pastries.”
