Pushing open the door, the words started out automatically. “Hey, I think I’ve got a few new theories about this. I mean, more so one I’m really latching onto. Know what we talked about earlier?” Jessie inquired, dropping her bag onto the floor against the door. “Hey, are you even listening to me?” She looked up, peering around the room. The sudden silence and emptiness began to settle against her and she could feel the familiar feeling of anxiousness and dread seep into her.
“No, no, no,” she began to mutter, tripping as she lunged for the bathroom door. Her palms where so sweaty it took her a minute to even get the door open, and what came from her mouth sounded like a creature completely un-human. “NO! You have to be okay, oh God! You’ll be okay!” she cried, stumbling over to the sink where the body was slumped. “Please! Get up! Don’t leave me, please! You were supposed to be okay, I was going to protect you!” she shrieked, trembling. He was only barely breathing, and the way his eyes were rolling up left her terrified. “You’ll be okay, you’ll be okay, don’t do this to me. Stay with me, stay with me please. It took a moment for it to sink in, “You’ve been poisoned” ripping from her throat in a broken whisper. “Look at me, okay? Just look at me,” she breathed, feeling his forehead and trying to frantically wipe off the sweat and foam that was growing. It took all of her resolve to not break into a million pieces as he slipped down to the floor, groaning slightly. She quickly followed with him, leaning against the cabinet as she placed his head in her lap. “I know, I know. I’ll tell you a story. You liked my stories,”she babbled, her voice cracking. “Okay, so one time I met this guy…and he was one of the best people I knew. He was funny, smart, sweet, caring, and loyal. He was all that and everything I could ever hope for in a person. And I-” she felt her breath catch as a serious of twitches went through his body, but she continued, no longer able to fight back the tears as she held one of his hands, stroking his hair with her free hand. “And I really, really care about him. More than anyone else. And I probably should have told him a lot sooner. I thought we’d have much more time.” She dared a look down, and she knew in that instant that he was gone. The way he just seemed to deflate as the last sigh slipped from him. His body was splayed across the floor, and with shaking fingers she pushed back the hair from his forehead, bending over to kiss him softly on the forehead. She could feel the sob shaking her body, and the sadness for once was stronger than her anxiety. “I’m going to miss you so, so much. But you already knew that, didn’t you
