La Rabbia, Guareschi v. Pasolini
La Rabbia is a film that is spilt into two parts, each part directed by a different director. Both La Rabbia parts have something unique from the other. Though both use the same footage, the narration and edits are different. Both portray a different message. This is indicative of how even in our culture today with super accurate cameras and ease of information sharing, that stories can be told in any light by the slightest of changes. As individuals and film-makers we must be aware of the choices we make and having intentionality in everything we do.
JP Gorin's The Hand
Last week I attended UCSD professor JP Gorins lecture on animation in film, Drawn into Film, The Hand. We watched the animations of Yuriy Norshteyn. The style of Norshteyn both surprised and left me bewildered. The contrast of animation from what I grew up watching gave it both a uniqueness and an intrigue. The final film we watched, Tale of Tales, was so interesting to me, the way animation changed throughout the film, the lack of much dialogue, the use of both humans and animals as characters in the same scenes, and so much more, make this film timeless and universal.

Artist Statement
When our group finished our first 4K project, Fresh, we were proud of our work but noticed a lot of things that could be improved. So when it came time to work on our final project, we knew we wanted to try stop motion 4K again. The idea of telling a story through stop motion was something we all wanted to do and props play a large part in stop motion. When we thought of the classic childhood story, Goodnight, Moon, we knew that props would be important, because there are so items the story shows and says "goodnight" to. We wanted to make as many props ourselves as we could. I feel that this connected us to our project. By sticking to the story line pretty strictly, we left our own twist by taking a drawn image story and making real-life. The theme of nostalgia interests me and I hope that it and many other themes resonate through this piece.
Final Project, Final Editing sessions
As the deadline for our final project draws closer our group is spending class time today working in the Mandeville basements. After color correcting and cropping, the only thing we have left to do before we put it all in timeline is our titles. Then once we get a HD version we are going to add sound. This project is continuing to run fairly smoothly and can't wait to see it on the 4K screen!
Random shooting thoughts
Today I was helping a friend film a project on the cliffs in la jolla. I thought the cloudiness of the day would make for not a great shoot. However the shoot turned out well. I enjoyed the look of the white lighting the overcast created. This grey backdrop allowed for the images in shot to really pop.
Setting up our "room" for Goodnight Moon
Link to our planning for our Goodnight Moon 4k stop motion! We will be shooting on Sunday and I will post our test shots then
Decided to go with stop motion again! Taking on the classic bedtime story, Goodnight Moon. Excited to see how this goes!
Pictures from our DIY 4K stop motion shoot
4K progress. Trying to come up with a song/ audio for our project. We had an idea to record diagetic sounds to use for our project, but I feel that with stop motion the use of non diagetic sound works better. Since our project plays with surreality Im looking for audio that is both playful and has a strong enough beat to go along with the disjunctive qualities of stop motion
Setting up for our 4K stop motion
4K Project
Working through our 4k project idea we decided to explore stop motion in 4k. We want to play with different textures in close up detail. At first were thinking of using only foods but decided to not limit ourselves to that topic. I'm excited to see how it turns out
Pocket Cinema
As I'm thinking of ideas for the pocket cinema project, "everyday oddities" is a theme that is pretty broad. Taking note of the things I do on a more-or-less daily basis points out how odd each one really is. Look at laundry, which when you think of humans as a species, an animal, washing clothes is pretty odd, let alone owning them. I was making egg salad the other day and while peeling the egg shell off a hard boiled egg, I thought about the oddities of the hard boiled egg. Inside that little shell, eggs hold the power to grow into a full sized, chicken (if fertilized obviously), but here I was peeling away this protection, to reveal a bouncy little snack, that I smashed up, dolloped some mayonnaise into and threw on some bread. I'm not sure exactly what I plan to do for my project but the look and feel of the eggshell and the egg itself intrigued me and I look forward to exploring this more.
Political Remix Video Recap
Our Political Remix Video is turning out really well. I'm proud of Haley and my work this past week. Having to adjust to the trials of the new Final Cut Pro X proved its challenges but thankfully we overcame those issues and our video has prevailed. Dealing with the issue of rape and rape culture brought up issues of "how far is too far?" Not only in the media but within our video as well. We contrasted different pollictians, news anchors, and comedians who address rape with the comedy sketch, "The Grapist" by the Whitest Kids You Know. The humor in this video also serves to comment on how lax we as a culture have become in regards to rape.I think we did a good job of balancing what we wanted to portray through our video, making a comment on rape culture, rape in the media, and societal views of rape.
