I don't think I will show the whole image here as it is clearly nsfw, but I looooved painting different types of scars. They are mostly not too big and are of the same type (mechanical injuries of a fighter), but maybe I'll do another artwork with my character who's acid burn survivor and it would be interesting also!

Overview of some topics when it comes to drawing characters who are burn survivors.

DISCLAIMER. Please keep in mind that this is an introductory overview for drawing some burn scars and has a lot of generalizations in it, so not every “X is Z” statement will be true for Actual People. I'm calling this introductory because I hope to get people to actually do their own research before drawing disabled & visibly different characters, rather than just making stuff up. Think of it as a starting point and take it with a grain of salt (especially if you have a very different art style from mine).

Talking about research and learning... don't make your burn survivor characters evil. Burn survivors are normal people and don't deserve to be constantly portrayed in such a way.

Edit: How are people seeing this post where I specifically talk about burn survivors being normal, real people, and still tag this as "TW body horror"? Not a single one of these drawings or pictures is a fresh injury. All of them are healed. How the hell would you feel if someone tagged a photo of you as "trigger warning: gore"?

Woah. I'm impressed that this type of activism is there somewhere. Saying it with all love and respect, I genuinely haven't come across this thing before.

I rarely see people with disfigured faces IRL, but I've met a couple. One was a grandma who visited to my art school to walk home a kid. She had half of her face paralyzed and a little disfigured. At first it made me skittish. She looked really grumpy.

But I got used to her eventually and I was even glad to see her from time to time. As a person with issues of face recognition, I was glad to recognize her every time with no mistakes, haha.

Another time was not so long ago and uhhh it's more of a shame. It was a guy working in a kitchen of a fast food cafeteria. I don't remember him much as I was too scared to look at him. I guess, he was a burn victim or something like that, he had big lumps of skin and flesh where they shouldn't be.

I know he was smiling and trying to look friendly, but I couldn't help myself. I felt like a child terrified of a book page with a photo of a spider. To be fair, I'm phobic of some skin conditions, you can get me hysterical with certain textures even because it would remind me a skin illness. It makes my life harder regularly.

And I often think how to make it work, both my phobia that probably will never go away completely and my belief people deserve to be respected however they look. I know it's partially a biological response to be anxious about disfigured human face. But I see how it doesn't help people with that kind of faces.

It's a thing that leaves me questioning if I'm a mean person for being scared.

as I said I know how to find refs for people with burn scars.

There are several personalities you can look into. The main actress of "Dirty God" (2019), Vicky Knight, is a real person with burn scars.

She's got her scars in the age of 8 in a house fire, so today her scarring is fully healed and is not really severe. Scars cover 1/3 of her skin. She's white. Also she's gay, which I personally find a win for lesbians. Plus she's my fancast for Eleanor Oliphant from "Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine".

Next case is much more severe. Jaqueline Saburido survived a car crush at the age of 20. She went through more than a hundred of surgeries to stay alive and to have a decent quality of life. She had ~60% of her body burned. She's Latina.

Acid attacks victims often are very public about their experience, so finding a person with acid burn scars online is easy. There are plenty of activists of different ethnicities!

Marzieh Ebrahimi (Iranian). What a sweet woman, look at her! ❤️ She was 25, the attack happened in 2014. What I find especially interesting is how her eyelids have scraps of skin melted together. Plus her scar looks darker and more saturated, on the opposite of fire burn scars on a white skin that tend to be very pale.

Actually, acid attacks deserve a special post. Too many people.

Also the source you can always rely on is bloggers and disability advocates somewhere in the internet. Sometimes they are not easy to find. My recent catch is Sergio Reyna (Latino). He survived a house fire at 2 y.o. He has YouTube, TikTok and and other social media pages.

I don't have any examples of black people, sadly! I'll look into it.

Hey. Do you know resources with art refs of disabled people specifically?

I mean visible disabilities of course, like face scarring, curved spine, missing limps, injured/absent eyes, ears and nose, etc. People with genetic conditions. Looking for this kind of refs is quite a job.

Sometimes they are also on the border of gore, if we speak about recent injuries or people who had surgeries long ago, for example after WW1.

I learned how to find the people with burn scarring. It's very common, so it's a 2/10 level of challenge. I have a friend with large burn scarring also. Plus there are many guides on wheelchairs now. But bodies are harder to find.

At first it got me puzzled as I thought it is accessible only as a paid resource, but actually you can use their pictures in a low resolution. The search is ok, though I don't like that there's no option to look for Asian models.

I am a loyal fan of their work for several years! But I had no idea they are queer. Found it out as I was writing this post. I love queer community, so many gems to find.

I'm really grateful how much he does for free access. Not only it's really helpful for hobbyist artists, poor fellas or someone off the international paying systems like myself, but it's a magnificent starter pack for beginners who can't spare money. Like young artists or someone who is just unsure for now if it's their thing. Doing God's work, thank you.

One of my all time favorites are pictures with cats. I'm just a crazy cat person. I don't even draw cats too often anymore (I can't give them justice), but I always appreciate a good ref with a cat.

The unique position of trans women in pornography is a separate discussion... I don't know if I can tell much on that, I'm just constantly puzzled with that. Patriarchy has a weird obsession with phallus in any given form.

Although this website have some sapphic content anyway.

I find it nice to find refs on body types that deviate from so-called norm. Like fat or really thin people. Mainstream porn is not very good at representing realistic bodies, especially women. As a fat person I always have a fat ref nearby, but I struggle with bony people.

Scarily thin? Yes. But that's a variation that exists and that's interesting to depict for me sometimes.

It's been 5 years since Tanya died of HFRS. We've never met, but I mourn her like a friend. Funny enough, as a kid of puritism culture I had no idea that talking about sex and sharing sexual content can be a bonding experience that can overcome death. Thank you, Tanya, you've changed me.
