Watched ‘Network’ the other day and it was a great movie. There is very rarely a bad Sidney Lumet movie. All the performances are amazing, William Holden & Faye Dunaway are fantastic. Eventhough it’s 50 years old this movie holds up today. Not just as a movie but its themes and critiques are still very relevant. Now the power of the network to influence and stir up people isn’t just in the hands of a few people on television, it’s in the hands of any red faced screaming windbag with an Internet connection.

Only thing that kinda annoyed me was that I bought the damn 4k edition, popped it in my 4k player and watched it on my 4k tv and man there were many ugly scenes (I’d say overall it looks fine, but some shots were not great) just some very muted 70s colors that leaned very blue overcast, and some shots where the subject was just out of focus. I know if thats how it was shot, that’s that, but damn how’d that happen! I was looking for and kinda expecting some tack sharp shots, some good grain and some slick 70s saturation, and it just felt a little more muted… I’ll assume that was the choice, but just slightly disappointing. But that’s my only gripe, I loved the movie. Worth a watch.

recent example. lady at my careers appointment had a post-it with her name on it stuck to the monitor, so i introduced myself by saying "hello, i'm eliot! you must be [name], it's nice to meet you!" and she stared at me as if i was the stupidest person alive and said icily, "yeah, i'm [name]. congratulations, you can read."

in bygone times this would have reduced me to a sort of quivering blancmange. thankfully i am now in a place where i was able to pull back, calmly evaluate this interaction, and say to myself "this woman should probably not be working in a customer-facing job"
