can we talk about how literally 64% of people wear glasses, and yet we NEVER see them in movies/tv unless it's on some nerdy or uncool character? why do we adhere to such a weird beauty standard that subconsciously makes us feel bad for,, not being able to see???

I used to work for LensCrafters and I can tell you for a fact that they make a big deal out of wanting as many customers as possible to want to get contacts. Every meeting there was a reminder that we were to push contacts. Hell, the other employees /managers repeatedly tried to push contacts on me even after I informed them that there was no way that I would ever shove a piece of plastic into my eye.

To them, the difference between selling glasses and getting a customer to sign up for contacts is like the difference between selling a video game and getting a player to get a monthly subscription.  And failing that their next big sell is for frames that cost twice to three times as much, but have little to no frame (and thus almost look like you aren’t wearing glasses at all) and are fragile as all hell (and thus are likely to break and have to be replaced).

They can’t rely solely on our prescription getting heavier or otherwise changing to the point that we have to buy a new pair every year. They want to push you to buy their product every time that you visit the optometrist and then some more in between.

As counter-intuitive as it might seem, it is in Big Optic’s best interest to convince us that we look terrible if we wear glasses.

This is all true but it's actually because it's difficult to film people wearing glasses - they reflect the set lights and camera and stuff. So it's easier not to bother. Most times I've been filmed, doing any sort of head shot/speak to camera stuff, the camera operator has had me take mine off.

Knives Out went to ridiculous lengths to allow the actors to wear glasses, sculpting different light diffusers so the reflections would be natural and everything

You can also just like. Take out the glass. Which we’ve done for decades. I can think of a whole movie franchise that shall not be named where one of the defining traits of the main character is that he wore glasses. It’s literally not that hard.

For the writers struggling to rid themselves of the classic ‘said’. Some are repeated in different categories since they fit multiple ones (but those are counted once so it adds up to 100 new words).

Note: everyone is entitled to their own opinion. No I am NOT telling people to abandon said and use these. Yes I understand that said is often good enough, but sometimes you WANT to draw attention to how the character is speaking. If you think adding an action/movement to your dialogue is 'good enough' hate to break it to you but that ruins immersion much more than a casual 'mumbled'. And for the last time: this is just a resource list, CALM DOWN. Hope that covers all the annoyingly redundant replies :)

if a patient has a seizure that lasts longer than 5 minutes, or if they suffer several seizures, they risk sustaining brain damage — because their brain can’t get oxygen during the seizure.

if a patient’s coughing up blood when they’re lying on their back, make sure to tune their face to the side so that they don’t choke on their own blood (the same applies to vomit too)

chest compression can and often leave patients with broken ribs. because you have to push down hard enough in order to help pump blood from the patient’s heart to their brain (the point is so that the brain gets blood, in order to prevent brain damage), and more often than not, you’ll end up breaking your patient’s ribs — that is normal and okay, because it’s better for your patient to have broken ribs than it is for them to lose their life.

after a course of electroconvulsive therapy, you’ll normally have to give your patient a dose of muscle relaxant, otherwise the aftermath of the shock may cause musculoskeletal complications.

you don't use a defibrillator to shock a patient if they already flat line, because their heart no longer has any electricity. quote "asystole isn't a shockable rhyme, and defibrillator may actually make it harder to restart the heart." (Cleveland Clinic)

the famous, classic "a character was knocked out and they stayed unconscious for hours before they woke up on their own with no lingering damage" trope is actually almost impossible if you want your work to be medically accurate (but if you don’t care about accuracy and are just here for the whump, that is totally fine!). if someone was knocked out and they stayed unconscious for more than several minutes, chances are that they suffer permanent brain damage, so they won't "wake up on their own in the next hour or two and be completely fine without intense medical attention".

He swallowed hard, his throat bobbing visibly as he fought to calm himself.

They pressed their back against the wall, their hands splayed out.

She whispered under her breath, her words shaky and barely audible.

Jealousy

He crossed his arms over his chest, his jaw tightening as his gaze followed her every move.

She tapped her foot impatiently, the rhythm sharp and irritated as she forced a smile.

He clenched his fists at his sides, the tension in his knuckles betraying his calm demeanor.

She cast a sideways glance, her lips pressed into a thin line.

They shifted in their seat, their shoulders stiff.

He ran his fingers through his hair, his movements brisk and frustrated as he fought to contain his thoughts.

Relief

She exhaled deeply, her shoulders dropping as the tension melted away.

He ran a hand down his face, his smile faint but unmistakably genuine.

She laughed shakily, her hand pressed to her chest as if trying to steady her racing heart.

He slumped against the nearest chair, his legs suddenly too weak to hold him up.

They let their head fall back, their eyes closing as a soft, contented sigh escaped their lips.

pass emotions to your readers creating relatable characters

Crafting characters is essential in storytelling, they can captivate readers convincing them to read your stories and also give the narration a kickto bring narrative to life. As a person capable to write, a writer, create well-developed characters is a fundamental part in drawing in your own audience and keep them committed to your work.

I will give you few advices on how to do it, based on my own work.

Give your character complexity and depth: Each character should be seen from the reader as a real person, someone he can relate to in various situations. As a writer you should give them unique personalities, motivations, strengths and flaws.

Show don’t tell: Be accurate, writing about your characters background, telling their stories, giving them traits, showing all of that in their actions, dialogues, interactions with others. This will give the reader a sensation of authenticity while reading and they will be able to immerse into your words, feeling like they are reading about something bonded to them.

Growth and Change: Writing about your characters changing the more the pages turns will help both you and the reader to feel the character more closer. You can write about little changes as bigger ones regarding their behaviour, their persona, their life. By doing so the reader will be even more taken into your story and will be more than happy to see how the story will unfold under their own eyes.

Relationships with other Characters: Another aspect very important. Their interactions can reveal their point of view, their values and beliefs. By writing down dynamic relationships instead of static ones, you can give depth to them and create opportunities for conflicts, romance, growth within the story itself.

By doing so, you will be able to show your crafting capabilities as a storyteller.
