i’ve been through here! it’s easily worst place I’ve ever driven through, and I’ve driven almost 300,000 miles through 41 states. if you are going through southern illinois and you get the notion to take the US-51/62 “shortcut” through Cairo instead of taking interstates 24/57 up and around, forget it. Cairo is a desolate and miserable place with an incredibly gruesome history of racial violence. you can literally feel it in the air. they also have an old, narrow bridge over the ohio river that you really don’t want to drive a semi truck across
