So as we all know ND did a ton of parallels from TLOU and TLOU II one of which was the Abby/Ellie theater fight which was a reference to the David/ Ellie fight. That scene did not work for me and I will explain why.
In the first game you are playing that fight as someone much smaller than your antagonist, plus the fact that Ellie is a teenager and David is an adult really adds to the fear I felt. To this day after multiple play throughs my stomach still gets tense when I know that scene is coming up and during that scene. Also going into the fight with the little knowledge we had of David made it scarier as well, we were shown glimpses of what he is capable of but didn’t know to the full extent of what he was capable of. Seeing him slash Ellie with a machete multiple times while trying to beat this level made me super sad. Having the playable character be someone you’ve grown and bonded with and the person chasing after you be someone you dislike and have only known for a short while made the game overs more emotionally impactful.
While in the second game(spoilers ahead) you play as Abby during that scene. The only reason I was tense was I believed like we did David, I would have to kill Ellie which after Joel dying I did not want to happen. Watching Abby die at the hands of Ellie multiple times really did nothing for me. In fact everytime I ended up getting Abby killed it really did nothing for me other than annoy me because that just meant it would be that much longer to play as Ellie. And I will be the first to admit I hate Abby and hated playing her sections can still understand and consider her reason of going after Joel legitimate.Having your opponent be arguably physically weaker( Ellie can hold her own but man those guns on Abby are bigger than Ellie’s entire head) and shorter if not around the same height as you didn’t give off the same fear as David, stronger, taller dude than 14 year old Ellie did. I’ll be honest I started laughing when Ellie started placing those trap mines like a mad woman because due to the prior game and my love for her it was like a friend laughing at their friend for doing something ridiculous. The fact that I could laugh during what was supposed to be an intense boss fight is why it didn’t work for me
However I do think had Abby instead of killing Joel brought him back to torture him and he had escaped and a scene similar to that happened I feel that would’ve made more sense? Even though the game tries to force it upon me I never see Ellie as a true monster....the only people arguably that were innocent that she killed were the NPCs but they would shoot at her anyway and she’s so horrified with each bad horror she does regardless of whether or not it was in the name of justice it just made her that much more of a sympathetic character to me. Joel, like Abby shows no mercy when it comes to torturing and murdering people regardless of their deemed innocence or moral bankruptcy. Having a beaten and kidnapped Joel, someone who we know did some bad shit but not the extent of it do that scene with Abby wouldve worked I feel. He’s a big scary dude who we know can commit atrocities without mercy. I think that with Abbys gameplay it would make sense for that to after her 10 hours for him to be her “monster”. And her actually winning against Joel in that scene but similarly how she let Ellie go she lets him go, realizing after weeks of torturing him that she wasn’t feeling better and with the Yara and Lev plot point eventually letting go of revenge and forgiving him. Ellie and Joel go home to Jackson and we are left to wonder whether or not they will mend their relationship. But it would leave a third game option open with Abby as a redeemable protagonist and not some divisive character that she is now. At the end of the day, I will not be one of those people that shits all over Abbys character design with thinly veiled misogyny and transphobia or calls Neil Druckmann nasty names because it’s a game. I do not sympathize with Abby and this game was not it for me and that’s ok, I still absolutely love and adore TLOU which Neil was hugely involved in so I believe he is still a good storyteller but I will admit this is not the story I feel was shown in the trailers or really the story I (selfishly) wanted. TLOU was Ellie and Joel’s journey and at the end of the day it was about love. It would have been a different story had the one of the two things either love or Joel but neither was kept. This game could’ve been a brand spin off in my eyes.
