Dungeons & Dragonairs is a tabletop RPG adaptation of Pokémon. We are currently working on a ruleset, as well as an original plotline and a Pokémon generator.

We also share art and puns because we love them.

How are the mechanics different?

Imagine playing a core Pokémon RPG as a tabletop game. Or, imagine playing a Dungeons & Dragons campaign set in the Pokémon world. That's what we're going for.

Mostly, we are maintaining the mechanics of core Pokémon RPGs but replacing digital RNG and complex calculations with dice rolls and simple math you can do in your head (or at most with pencil and paper). This does involve simplifying certain things and changing others entirely; but for the most part moves work the way you expect them to, and even mechanics that are different should still follow the spirit of the originals.

We are also introducing trainer mechanics so that your character origin stories and play styles can actually influence the game. This helps set Dungeons & Dragonairs apart from the Pokémon video games in many ways.

What is the story?

You'll have to wait and see! But we can tell you that it takes place in Johto, about five years after the events of HeartGold and SoulSilver. The player characters meet in Goldenrod City, only to discover that the local gym leader, Whitney, has gone missing...

What is PokéStudies?

The Pokémon games don't address a lot of aspects of the Pokémon world, like infrastructure and government. In writing the Dungeons & Dragonairs story, we had to figure out how some of these things might work.

PokéStudies grew from these discussions, first as a post series on here and now as a video series on @umbreonlibris's YouTube channel. The series is largely based on evidence from the Pokémon games (and occasionally other canons), but also includes a fair chunk of speculation and some free-range worldbuilding where evidence is particularly lacking.

When will Dungeons & Dragonairs launch?

We hope to have version 1.0 of the ruleset ready by the end of 2018, but we will provide more details as we work on it.

New buildings!

The Dungeons & Dragonairs story—at least, this first one that @sammarkham​ is writing—takes place in Johto five years after the events of HGSS. We're modifying some maps to use as a reference, and that meant making a few new key buildings. Here are some of them!

Some cities have local police forces! Goldenrod has a proper police station, but in Ecruteak the police operates out of an officer's house.

Ecruteak also has the Pokémon Protection Society (PPS), where players can adopt rare or strong Pokémon. But these are rescued Pokémon, so they often have some handicap—like a Totodile that's afraid of water. The building features a fenced yard so that Pokémon can go outside.

In Olivine, the boardwalk near the pier features a market with some interesting vendors: Thrifty Joe's Funky Finds, Alolan Wonders, and an unnamed BBQ joint that serves Pokémon meats. I made these based on the Name Rater tent.

Finally, there is a houseboat in the waters of Olivine. On the houseboat walls are Pokémon murals—here you can see one featuring Dewgong and another with Alomomola.

Pokemon and DND. Not just a 90′s thing.

POKEMON HOMEBREW RPG: Dungeons & Dragonairs, an Introduction

I love the balance between spontaneity & preparation in Tabletop RPG games: like Dungeons and Dragons or Pathfinders… I also love 90’s nostalgia and the amazing creation that is Pokémon. It also helps that many in my creative Mob love Pokemon and Tabletop games too… so two years ago, when I went searching for a home-brew version to play with them and didn’t find one I could fall in love with, I created one myself based on the stats found in the console games and then further simplified…

It took me a year to plan the core rules and it took our group another year to Beta test various iterations before we could start up on a campaign. We are now a few months into the latest (and smoothest) version and we want to share this version of Pokemon RP with everyone else who is a fan of Pokemon very soon! We’re still some time from having a full rule-set to share, but in the meantime we want to release some of the story we have going on, the concepts of the game and discussions around the real-imagined world of Pokemon that we discuss for our world building using different source texts (mostly the Nintendo games).

These discussions are in the POKÉSTUDIES section of our Tumblr: which is mostly run by @sammarkham and @umbreonlibris … I am more of a rules and playtest kind of person, so I decipher the mechanics of the game (and make the pokemon cookies).

This is just sort of an announcement/teaser saying “hey! This is a thing we’re running on Tumblr and if you’re interested in a Pokemon Tabletop RPG based on the video game, let us know!” because we want to make sure that we can share this piece of fun with everyone who is interested and to find other Pokemon lovers who want a more strategic way to consume the 90’s greatest piece of gaming media.

Messy art is messy. But anyway, this is a comic about one of the characters in the Dungeons and Dragonairs RP I’m running/writing! His name is Buster and he usually wears a ghillie suit but hell if I can draw that. His Grimer’s name is “Experiment 88”…
