Let’s evolve some creatures.

The way it works is I’ll come up with some simple creature designs and a condition they need to survive, and you come up with ideas or designs for how they might evolve to handle those conditions.

Here are the initial creatures:

For eons these creatures could survive by eating the plentiful organic materials found in their ocean home without needing to move much or at all.

In the last 100 million years or so, the amount of naturally occurring food in the water had decreased. So now in order to survive these creatures must evolve better methods to acquire more scarce food, or find a new food source.

The green one is a plankton (as in, it cannot move against the current). It’s Umbrella like shape allow it to stay somewhat near the surface, as well as getting the most surface area for sunlight. It’s very small. The bulbuous thing at the bottom both serve to keep the umbrella part above and also contain the spores of the thing. It can “fold” the umbrella, mostly to protect it and the bulb, but they inner part of the umbrella also produce enzyme to clean the body of pest.

The group is called “Viridiratis” (green floater in latin). Some member might evolve to become rather plant like, but some may evolve to use the enzyme to feed on others smaller plankton, or the folding nature of the umbrella to move around.

One clade of the floaters saw the bell-shape separate into two swimming arms of sorts. The reproductive bulb also got a tough semi-transparent protection which is fashioned into the shape of a fin to allow the creature to swim more efficiently to food.

Another clade saw the bell become a wide umbrella shape. One umbrella developed a form of photosynthesis while another became a perch from which the creature can hang its passive grabbing arms to catch unlucky prey.

The photosynthesizing umbrella creatures begin huddling together to catch as much light as possible until they form a grid of cells that eventually evolves into a single creature with a large wide photosynthesizing shell.

They can reach sizes as large as 10cm

This is actually hella interesting, bc in simple terms, tigers are extroverts and lions are introverts. There’s more to it, but that’s the gist.

Whenever zoo’s tried to put lions and tigers in the same enclosures, the tiger would eventually try to groom the lioness and play constantly. The lioness would lose patience and snaps at them

Seize the Day was a calendar program made by in 1994 by Buena Vista software. It features graphics that at the time, were revolutionary because of the way they handled color cycling. These images were static bitmaps, but by changing color values, they appear animated. What is also impressive about these images is that they had full day night cycles built in, rendered also through color cycling. A few years ago, a html5 version was made. A copy was uncovered online and there is a way to use the program through DOSbox. As well, one of the original programmers for the project, Iam Gilman, has thought of the idea of remaking it, open sourced, for modern machines.

I had a dream recently...

That I was out playing pokemon go, and people all over the world had started seeing this new pokemon popping up. Like out of nowhere this little thing started appearing occasionally. No word from Nyantic or The Pokemon Company about when or why they had released it. The pokemon was called “sleepytired” and it looked like this.

And you couldn’t catch it, the ball would just go straight through it. People were data mining and shit trying to figure out how to catch this thing but they couldn’t. Eventually they would just have to give up and leave the encounter.  After a few weeks of people reporting sightings of it, and no word from Nyantic, some creepy shit started happening…

What started happening was, if you entered an encounter with a “sleepytired” with the AR on it would manifest in the real world. But it wouldn’t do anything. It would just float there, watching. 

So people being curious started doing this whenever they could, and these things would just manifest and stay there. Obviously this was causing problems because these things would just be floating menacingly in local parks and in the local McDonald. And they couldn’t be moved, because anyone who tried to move them or touch them would be struck by sudden, intense, chronic fatigue that seemingly had no cure. 

The last part of the dream I remember was watching a news broadcast telling people that pokemon go was now illegal, and to avoid touching or disturbing the creepy little things that are now just about everywhere.

PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES GIJINKAS (PART 1)

HTML: Handles Internet with CSS and Javascript. Breaks the 4th wall on a daily basis. Literally a popstar. The gay is strong here.

CSS: The one that does HTML’s wardrobe. Avid abstract artist. Bullies Javascript for eternity. Extremely one sided love for HTML.

Javascript: Will do anything to keep HTML’s shit together. Has more than 10 toolboxes. Java’s happy sibling. Lowkey crush on Ruby.

PHP: Confused 80% of the time. Oblivious to everything. ??????. No one knows she’s a great musician.

SQL: Tsundere like no tomorrow. Cares a lot about PHP, but also consistently gets pissed at her. They live in the library. Robot arm because of a bookshelf accident.

Python: Loves mountains and camping. Owns 2 bikes. Lowkey crush on the entire C family. Flaming bisexual.

Ruby: Python’s hiking partner. Lives in a cave she renovated all on her own. Secretly wants to overthrow Python. Highkey crush on Javascript.

C: Wildlife and nature. Exercises with tree trunks. The one who taught Python how to camp. Daddy.

C++: The son of C. Always hangs out with Java at the arcade. Consistently wins online arguments. Has a crush on Python.

Java: C++’s bestfriend. Owns 2 bookshelfs: One with video games, and one with actual books. Doesn’t know what sleep is. Absolute nerd.

Queen’s Thief Appreciation Week Prompt 6: Favorite Line or Moment

EUGENIDES: “Don’t… lower… the… point… in… third!”

COSTIS  (paraphrased): I HAVE MADE A TERRIBLE MISTAKE

Like some of the other prompts, I can’t possibly choose a favorite scene or retort in this series that holds some of my favorite scenes and retorts in all of literature. But I hadn’t drawn Costis yet and I’ve always wanted to attempt this moment.

I went through several sketch iterations to get here. First I threw together an inspiration board and proceeded to completely ignore the color scheme I created:

Then I blocked out a rough sketch of the action:

 I liked the body language here, but Gen’s movement isn’t all that believable, and overall it felt too stagnant. So I tried again, tilting things a little for a low-horizon perspective:

Drawing this sketch made me remember that I  h aT .e  drawing foreshortened perspective, so even though the position is more dynamic, I changed it up again and went with more of an angled view:

There! That sketch felt a lot better, and it gave me the opportunity to make full use of rim and bounce light, because I’m Trash for rim and bounce light.

I blocked in my values (first in green, like an idiot):

Then drew my lineart (with an 8-pt charcoal brush or some foolery, I can’t remember):

Laid down my color base:

And then it was just refining and squinting at my color balancer and doing fun details like earrings and stubble and flying sweat. 

I should note that this is decidedly more involved than I usually get with my pieces—normally I’m doing well if I bother to do a value sketch at all, never mind multiple perspectives and an inspiration board. But I wanted to get this scene right and give it the energy it deserved. Also Gen has Kaz Brekker hair and I’m not sure how that happened, but we’re going with it, whatever.

Last minute modron miniatures for tomorrow’s game. Unfortunately don’t have time to paint them up, but they’ll do in a pinch. 

I’ve always loved modrons, not so much for their roots in D&D and Planescape, but for their general weirdness. They look like a 3rd grader’s doodle that someone turned into a monster, and their “unrealness” is equally adorable as it is unnerving.

I loved using these homemade modron minis. They did not last very long, but my players adored them. 

Pro tip: Don’t let a lack of supplies, time, or talent stop you from making minis for your games. Your players will love them regardless.
