Dust of Eden - Faction Reveal
Civilians
The civilians of the location known as Lyra’s world are the inhabitants of a universe in which having a visible dæmon is as common as having a shadow. Civilians, like in most worlds, are likely to be the largest group and contain those who do not explicitly align or affiliate themselves with other communities and factions. This being said, it does not mean that some civilians do not have associations or biases towards any of the other member groups. Those within this classification often find themselves the most affected by the others, whether it be the the pulls of the Magisterium or the actions of the witches.
Subfactions: The Social Elite: Within their ranks are several subgroups, one which is more notably known as the aristocracy. The aristocrats are those of society who have been most favoured in its construction. Blessed with monetary wealth, political power, and influence, this group of people help tip the scales in their favour. Whether innocent of intent or more malicious, they have a hand in guiding all aspects of the world around them even if the Church is in primary control of Brytain.

Gyptians
The Gyptians are a tight-knit nomadic people representing a wide variety of cultural backgrounds from all across Brytain. They have built their lives and constructed their culture around their migratory ways, lives lived on the waterways of the Fens spread through the country. Known for the sense of duty they hold for all those within their ranks, they treat one another as part of one unified family. Although generally honourable people, civilians sometimes view them as a disfavorable part of society and look down on them.
Subfactions: The Coast: Where the land meets the sea or ocean, the coastal region is a tumultuous place in which to settle down, but the family here is happy to do so. Battling winds, cold, and choppy water, the rough weather warrants a strong individual. Those of this region are steadfast and strong. Though a lot of the colder months are spent among the Fens, come mid-spring this family migrates back to the coast to stay until late autumn. Marine life and waterfowl make up most of this family’s diet.
The Fens: As the main hub and familial meeting place, the Fens are a naturally marshy region of shallow lakes and rivers. This family rather goes with the flow of the rivers. Though very windy and most definitely humid, the Fens are important in absorbing storms before reaching inland. Waterfowl, fish, amphibians, eels, and small mammals make up most of this family’s diet. Located within the Fens is a low-island named Byanplats, wherein the Byanroping is held at the Byanzaal.
The Tarns: Proglacial mountain lakes, ponds or pools, formed in a cirque excavated by a glacier. The family that migrates between a few different tarns, depending on the severity of the weather in certain seasons, are fairly reclusive and don’t often associate with those not directly involved within their family, extended included. Sheltered from harsh weather conditions for the most part, they do see a lot of rain. They follow the migratory path of a couple species of ungulates. Various small mammals, fish, and birds make up most of this family’s diet.

Magisterium
Based out of Geneva, the Magisterium is the ruling authority of the Holy Church. In the Dæmon Plane they also have a stronghold in London, where Buckingham Palace would be found in the Modern Plane. Known by their opposition for their censorship of all information distributed throughout their world, any discoveries that may affect the Church must be run through and accepted by the Magisterium. It was the Holy Church, through the Magisterium, that deemed Dust as evidence of original human sin. For this reason they have been studying it with intense scrutiny while also denying the very truth of its existence.
Subfactions: The Absolution Board: Although the true nature of this board is not known to the public, what is rumoured is that its members are thought to be absolved of all sin through regularly practised preemptive penance. Those within the Magisterium who are considered to be of high enough rank know the true purpose of this board and that they are responsible for the necessary evils that the Magisterium must commit. Ranging from the small sins which do not blemish the soul, to the execution of those found guilty of treason, those who work within its ranks operate with the belief that they will pass judgement when their time comes despite any crimes committed in the name of the Magisterium and the Authority.
The Consistorial Court of Discipline: Concerned with heresy and non-believers, their duty is to find those who would question and challenge the word of the Church and reform them. Established by the last Pope, John Calvin, they have been doing their duties for many years since. From the moment of establishment the Church had absolute power over all aspects of life and continue to do so to this day.
The General Oblation Board: A semi-private operation funded by Marisa Coulter, the principal purpose of the Board was to practise and perfect intercision, the separation children from their dæmons to prevent them from attracting Dust. They believe that what they are doing is reversing the very concept and innate folley of Original Sin. Although the stronghold of the program was destroyed at the Station, they still continue their work.
The Ordained: As is ordered in our world, but with the absence of a Pope, the hierarchy of the ordained in the Magisterium is as follows: Cardinal, Archbishop, Bishop, and Priest. As a holy order, the Magisterium places those who are ordained in the highest regards within its ranks. These people are seen to be equal in power in standing as politicians are in The Modern Plane. Although people of the Authority, or so they claim, it is important to remember these people may just as easily be corrupted by the power and position they hold, but just as well be kind and generous in the same stroke.
The Witch Integration Program: Tasked with the duty of assimilating Witches into Magisterium controlled life, this board heads the effort of ending the subversive nature of the Witches and their practices. Sometimes, if necessary, through several extreme measures its members promote a life outside of the clans Witches are often brought up in and show them that ordinary and reverent life can be achieve

Scholars
Scholars are people who more often than not value education and knowledge above all other ties to outside communities and groups. This is not always the case, however, as allegiances to both academia and alternate factions can be comparable. Most scholars have ties to at least one of the colleges throughout Brytain and are either sponsored by these colleges, or in rarer cases, the Magisterium themselves. Along with the civilians, they are one of the only factions which spans both the Dæmon Plane and Modern Plane. Within Lyra’s world they are more often known as academics, or those tied to studies even if not involved in teaching themselves. Many of these people dedicate their lives to the studies of their chosen field.
Subfactions: Explorers: Often not tied down to any one college, explorers are those who go out into the world, whether nationally or internationally, to explore and challenge the truths presented to them. These academics spend their times searching for answers to questions that they sometimes do not even know they’ve posed. More often than not, these are the people who are at the forefront of thought and discovery.
Professors: Professors are scholars who have chosen to use their expertise in their fields as teachers, often teaching at universities or in smaller scales at colleges or even primary schools. During their teaching years some professors do continue their studies, though more often than not they do end up dedicating more time to either research or teaching.

Witches & Shamans
Although strongly resembling humans physically, witches differ from humans both biologically and culturally. Just as humans, they have dæmons which only ever settle as birds and can be separated from them over long distances after a coming-of-age ritual. Witches are known for their magical abilities and millenia-long life spans. They live together in clans which have histories of forming alliances and waging wars with one another. Witches are only ever born of other witches, and though they may take many humans as lovers throughout their lives, only the female children of a witch are considered witches or possess the lifespan of a witch. In the Dæmon Plane it is known that only females are Witches, but those who later find themselves identifying as female can begin the process of training to be a Witch if of the right heritage. In other worlds it is also known that there are sometimes male witches.
Despite being far less common, Shamans do exist within the realms of the Dæmon Plane and other magical worlds. They are much more spiritual in nature than their Witch counterparts, Shamans often specialise in spiritual matters more than magical, but have been known to practise magic as well. In their practices they often uses their spiritual prowess as a means of healing and foresight. As opposed to the ways that Witches live in clans and can only be a Witch of the correct bloodlines, Shamans lead more solitary lives and can be taught the practise over the course of much dedicated training.
Subfactions: Lake Enara: Named for their location on the banks of Lake Enara, this clan is ruled by Queen Serafina Pekkala. They are thought to be the first clan to have heard of the prophecy concerning Lyra Silvertongue and have since taken it upon themselves to be the keepers of the prophecy and protectors of the girl, anything to ensure that it comes to fruition. Although their lands had been destroyed by the Magisterium’s attacks, they have begun to rebuild what they can with their attentions split between defending their home and finding Lyra. Internally there are those who believe that the clan should come first, especially in light of the attacks against their lands. The choices made by Serafina Pekkala have created a rift despite the respect that most of the Witches hold for their queen.
Borough Lewisham: As a partially integrated clan, Borough Lewisham have faced renouncement from many of their sistering clans. The divide between them and the others is only further deemed by the fact that they do not practise the tradition of not keeping material possessions. Being partly integrated many of them have found work in various parts of London and will perform rituals, offer ointments, and sometimes even spells in exchange for payment. Some work out of small shops, others from their homes. It is known that some of the Witches here have ordinary jobs that have little to do with magic at all. Amongst them, and the only reason any of the outer Witch Clans has contact with them, is a Witch known to be a powerful healer.
Lake Lubana: Also named for where the clan is situated for the majority of the year, Lake Lubana finds themselves on the banks of the sprawling lake, ruled by Queen Ruta Skadi. Similarly to their sister clan, they found their lands partially destroyed in the attacks by the Magisterium. Although they hold knowledge of the prophecy they are far less eager to act upon it, insistent that fate will play out as it is meant to be. More concerned with protecting their homes and families many of them have chosen to stay out of the fight that Lake Enara has claimed will come to affect them all in time.

Hey, I'm really interested in an HDM rp and so happy to finally see one!! My only thing is, I'm always hesitant to join public rps based on existing media because of canons. Will there be canons from the books that are playable? I love the world and the characters but canons would make it feel really competitive for "high value" characters who get tons of attention and snapped up early.
Hello there! We’re really glad to hear that you’re interested but also definitely hear your concerns. This is something we’ve discussed at length, and while we have decided that ultimately we will be exploring the world the canons, that Dust of Eden will more be focused on the individual journeys of every character and not just canons. We hope to really achieve an equal playing field by offering site canons (which we will show in time) as well as new, independently written ideas our staff has come up with so that people feel less that they have to a certain sense of canon or compete in anyway. We really hope to see you, though, and please feel free to ask more questions as them come up!
