So after a lot of reflection and studying, I have finally made the “Kibbe Face types” board specifically for Black Women because someone had to do it! 

 I am not assigning these gorgeous ladies a Body Type per say but this is more of a representation as to how I’d imagine each Face Type to look like on a Black woman. I am open to discuss the subject any time!

Body Type and Style Essence: Chloe Bailey

Chloe Bailey from the duo Chloe x Halle is an American actress and singer. She is an amazing performer and has a sweet personnality.

She is about 5ft5 tall and appears to be very curvy and short.

To me, there’s no doubt that she is a Romantic in both the Kitchener and Kibbe style system. Almost all of her features are round and she looks her best in draped clothes. that accentuate her curves. She also looks amazing when she adds curls to her locks.

Chloe is one of the most influential artist of this generation and she surely will be around for a while!.

Body Type and Style Essence: Halle Bailey

Halle Bailey is an actress and a singer known for being half of the musical duo Chloe x Halle. She is soft spoken and very musically talented.

Halle was born on the year 2000 and her height is between 5ft and 5ft2 making her very tiny in stature.

I originally thought she looked like she would be in the Gamine family in the Kibbe Body type system but she was quite young when she began her career, and as she grew, she gained some musculature and shape.

Some people have typed her as a Soft Natural. A Soft Natural would look good wearing clothes that are light and fresh. Open necklines are ideal for this body type. However, she may actually be a Soft Gamine  which would mean crisp and slightly rounded pieces would suit her well.

Halle has a very interesting face, very fairy like and unique. She has wide spaced eyes and small rounded features which make her look youthful. Her face reads Ingenue and Ethereal.

Her best looks in my opinion are in light reflecting fabrics to enhance her Ethereal features, soft and rounded dresses to honor her Ingenue essence and soft colors that compliment her gentle aura.

Halle is a soft yet stricking beauty. Her casting as Ariel makes a lot of sense when we see her and especially when we hear her voice. 

I can’t wait to see her in May 2023 in The Little Mermaid!

Body Types and Style Essence: a look into Chloe x Halle

Welcome to my analysis based on the theories of the image professionnal David Kibbe and the style consultant John Kitchener.

I will use multiple celebrities as exemples because of their high visibilty in order to illustrate different approaches to style and harmony according to the body types, essences and personnalites.

Body Type and Style Essence: Michelle Williams

Michelle Williams is a singer and actress famous for being a member of the girl group Destiny’s Child. She was born in 1980 in Illinois and took an interest in singing from going to church.

Michelle stands at 5′8 in height and has a slender body. She is no doubt a Dramatic in the Kibbe system. She looks amazing in long clothes with geometric details and suits.

Michelle has a very defined bone structure paired with rounded eyes and a short nose. 

I think she would belong in the Dramatic and Gamine family in the Kitchener’s Style Essence system. The Gamine influence makes her able to rock edgy styles with original patterns and shapes.

Michelle can pull off dramatic makeup as well like smokey eyes or bold lips. She’d look incredible in vintage 20′s inspired looks as well!

Kibbe Body Type and Style Essence: Kelly Rowland

Kelly Rowland is a singer, songwriter and actress born in Atlanta in 1981. She has been in the public eye since she was a teenager, in the popular girlband Destiny’s Child. 

She has starred in multiple movies, Tv shows and programs and has a successful career.

Kelly Rowland stands tall with a height of 5′8. She also has a slander body which makes her a Dramatic in the Kibbe Body Type system. Her clothes recommendations are fitted, long clothes with sharp edges and asymmetrical details.

However, when we look at her face, it is not so Dramatic. She has harmonious features and a welcoming smile. She looks friendly and displays a naturally elegant aura.

I believe she has both a Classic and Natural essence. Timeless and simple cut fit her the best, but she can also go for a more relaxed look. As fo her hair, she looks great when it falls in a natural way or in a classic bob.

Kelly glows in the most simple outfits, she has an effortless beauty !

As for her makeup, a fresh and classic touch can emphasis her beauty even more!

Kibbe Body Type and Style Essence: Beyoncé

Beyonce Giselle Knowles Carter is a singer, songwriter and actress born in Houston Texas in 1981. She was introduced to the Entertainment industry with Destiny’s Child which was a popular girlgroup in the late 90′s.

She is the most Grammy awarded Female Artist.

Beyonce is about 5′7 in height and has a moderate vertical line. She also has a very curvy body and delicate frame. David Kibbe assigned her the Romantic body type which means she looks great in soft, drapping fabrics and moderate length dresses. Floral print and lace also look great on her.

Yet, she also can pull off longer dresses and bigger, crisp details which should overwhelm her according to her assigned body type. The following outfits have Soft Dramatic lines.

She also has long limbs and doesn’t look small next to notoriously tall women like Rihanna (5′8) or Kelly Rowland (5′8).

Beyoncé doesn’t fit the small and delicate description Romantics commonly have. On the other side, she could be a “tall Romantic” if David Kibbe removes the height limitation to his system.

As for Beyoncé’s features, they are very soft and rounded. She has a delicate beauty and portray sensuality effortlessly. She has a strong Romantic essence. Her best looks include soft curls and waves paired with light shimmery makeup.

Her best makeup look remains the one in the “Check On It” Music Video. Truly iconic.

« The Kibbe body types are an array of 13 style types based on physical characteristics (and personality essence). The system was introduced by David Kibbe during the 1980s. Kibbe’s archetypes are more in line with style essences theory [than other body typing systems]. These theories aim at creating an overall harmonious style image of a person rather than focusing on styling individual body parts. »

Body is described as being either yang (sharp) or yin (soft). The blend of yin and yang in the bones and flesh makes a classic body type while a contrast makes a gamine body type. Bluntness in the bone structure is called “soft yang” and makes the natural type. Pure yin would be romantic while pure yang is dramatic.

There is 5 family types; Dramatic being the most yang type while Romantic is the most yin type. Between these extremes, a multitude of body types exist from taller and broader to smaller and rounder.

Here is a brief description of them:

Dramatic: tall and narrow - Soft Dramatic: tall and narrow with soft flesh

Natural: angular and broad - Flamboyant Natural: tall and broad - Soft Natural: soft and slightly broad

Classic: balanced - Dramatic Classic: slightly angular and balanced - Soft Classic: slightly soft and balanced

Gamine: small and angular -  Flamboyant Gamine: smallish, lean and angular - Soft Gamine: small frame and soft

Romantic: small and very rounded - Theatrical Romantic: small, rounded and slightly sharp

The five families are also style essences in the Kibbe system.

John Kitchener’s take on style essence adds two more essences to Kibbe’s system: Gamine and Ethereal.

Kibbe Body Type and Style Essence: Chou Tzuyu

Chou Tzuyu is a Taiwanese singer in the girlgroup TWICE formed in 2015. She is the youngest member and the most popular/ famous member of the band. She is rather shy but gained a lot of confidence over the years.

She stands at 5′7 which is tall for a woman.

Tzuyu is tall and has some softness to her flesh. She is a Soft Dramatic in the Kibbe Body type system. The best outfits for her must have some kind of waist emphasis and hold her curves. Longer pants and skirts also fit better. The bigger the details/ pattern the better for her silhouette. Lush and sensual are words associated with this type.

However when we look at her face, Tzuyu doesn’t really exude the overly feminine and sensual archetype. She is more girlish and innocent looking with her proportionate features and big doe eyes. She also always look put together and chic.

In the Kitchener system, Tzuyu falls into the Ingenue and Classic categorie. Youthful and elegant are two words to sum it up. She looks great in pastel colors and delicate trims. 

Now Tzuyu always looks gorgeous, but these outfits really emphasize her beauty. Simpler outfits are enough to let her charm shine through.

I believe she looked her best during “What Is Love” era (Honorable mention: “Signal” era)

 Kibbe Body Type and Style Essence: Son Chaeyoung

Son Chaeyoung  is a South Korean singer, rapper and songwriter and a member of the girl group Twice. She was born on April 23rd 1999. She has participated in writing several songs for her band and she is really into art and possesses many tattoos on her body.

She is rather short with a height of 5′3. She is petite and has long limbs as well as sharp shoulders. 

She is a Flamboyant Gamine in the Kibbe system. The clothes recommended for her body type are fitted, cropped with interesting patterns or a “tomboy” kind of style.

As for Chaeyoung’s face, she has a very innocent and youthful look. She has big feline like eyes, full lips and cheeky smile. She also has a hint of playfullness to her appearance.

She fits the Ingenue and Gamine archetype. Therefore, dresses and skirts that are fitted are her best pieces. Ruffles and bows empasis her look and she is able to play with mix and match. Chaeyoung can have fun woth accessorizing her outfits, leaning either more on the tomboy side or the girly side.

Chaeyoung is rarely styled out of her style essence. That’s why it was hard to narrow it down to one best era; her best looks were during “Fancy” “I Can’t Stop Me” and “The Feels”

Kibbe Body Type and Style Essence: Kim Dahyun

Kim Dahyun is a South Korean performer and member of the girlgroup TWICE. She was born in May the 28th in 1998. She is famous for her entertaining and fun personnality in broadcast shows as well as for her killer parts in TWICE’s songs. Dahyun’s features make her stand out from other idols as she is one of the few women with monolids.

She is 5ft2 tall which is rather short even for a South Korean woman.

She is small and curvy with some sharpness to her bone structure. She is typed as a Theatrical Romantic in the Kibbe system. According to this system, Dahyun’s outfits need to emphasis her curves and be super feminine and sophisticated meaning drapes, intricate details and light fabrics.

Though she really pulls off all of these looks, we can’t ignore someone’s face to determine what kind of clothes suits them the best.

Dahyun has a very youthful face. She can at times have a playful smile that shows her quirky personnality. Her pale skin also emphasis her unusual beauty.

Her style essences in the Kitchener’s system are Gamine and Ethereal. She is able to play with her tomboy and girly side; she looks good in styles with original patterns and delicate details. Fitted and cropped lines look good on Dahyun but loose and light fabrics with shiny ornaments compliment her ethereal essence.

Dahyun has wide range of style expression. She fits most concepts and can experiment a lot with fashion. She shined the most in “Yes or Yes” era (honorable mention to “Likey”)

Kibbe Body Type and Style Essence: Myoui Mina

Myoui Mina is a Japanese singer and member of the Kpop group Twice formed by JYP Entertainment. She is well known for her ballerina skills, beautiful visuals and calming aura. Her personnality is introverted though she has been displaying a solid presence in the latest Twice stage performances. 

She is 5ft4 which is slightly above average for a Japanese woman and has a proportionate body.

She fits in the Classic family in the Kibbe system. She looks her best when she wears simple, clean and timeless cuts.

Mina also looks very refined and naturally graceful. She has effortless class and possesses a captivating otherwordly aura. She was given the nickname “Blackswan” because of these qualites however some would argue a better term for her would be “Whiteswan” because of her serene presence.

I believe Mina has a Classic essence paired with an Ethereal essence. Simple pieces with small intricate details work for her as well as light colors, lightweight fabrics and shiny reflective materials. 

She can look like she is from another time or almost like a mystical being when styled this way. Mina has a natural charisma that stands out and draws people in. She has a unique appeal and has the potential to become a popular icon or a brand ambassador for a luxurious french brand like Chanel or Dior!

Her best era so far was “Feel Special” in term of styling. Mina was on hiatus at that time for personal reasons but she still stood out in the music video.

Kibbe Body Type and Style Essence: Park Jihyo

Jihyo is the leader and main vocalist in the Korean girlgroup TWICE. She was born in February the 1st in 1997. She was a trainee for 10 years before debuting in TWICE in 2015, making her the idol with the longest training period under JYP Entertainment. Jihyo has a dynamic personnality and a powerful presence despite being only 5ft3.

Jihyo looks short and athletic yet she has some softness to her flesh.

She is a Soft Natural in the Kibbe system. As a consequence, she looks great in flowing and light fabrics with curved edges and waist emphasis.

Her big doe eyes and full features make her very youthful yet there is something mature about her face. She also looks very down to earth and warm. 

Therefore, I think she has a Romantic, Ingenue and Natural essence in the Kitchener system. She looks great in fresh and flirty outfit. (flower patterns, short skirts, lightweight fabric, cute detail...)

She may have a stronger Romantic essence than Natural or Ingenue as she looks gorgeous in pure Romantic style.

Besides, her beauty is enhanced with a short hairstyle and soft waves.

To resume, Jihyo is a woman who can display sensuality and youthfulness in an effortless way. She can slay any concept but she shines the most in summer as it embodies her personallity in an effective way. “Alcohol Free” is my favorite Jihyo era. (Honorable mention to “Dance The Night Away”)

Kibbe Body Type and Style Essence: Minatozaki Sana

Sana is a singer and dancer in the Korean girlgroup TWICE. She is of Japanese decent and was born in December the 29th in 1996. She is known for her natural cuteness and strong charisma on stage. She has an unique vocal tone that adds a fresh and youthful appeal to TWICE’s songs.

Her height ranks around 5ft5 which is above average for a Japanese woman.

She is usually typed as a Flamboyant Natural in the Kibbe system as she looks taller than she actually is and possesses some blunt shoulders. Therefore long loose fitting clothing look the best on her. The key is to look effortless.

However in the Kitchener’s system, she is able to pull way more outfits. Sana has big doe eyes paired with soft high cheekbones that make her look innocent: this makes her an Ingenue in the Style essence system. She also has a very girl next door look to her which makes her a Natural in this system. 

As a result, flowy and relaxed dresses with dainty details and edges look particulary good on her. Short fits are also better for her.

However as I was studying her style essence, something still bothered me. Sana looks incredibly good in fitted, moderate and sophisticated outfits. Her high bridged nose brings a regal charm to her face despite having a very down to earth personnality and appearance. I see some Classic essence in her.

Sana possesses a wide range for style expression. But I believe her Ingenue essence comes first and really ties the outfits together.

Another outfit that combines both her Natural and Ingenue essence

Finally one that combines her Classic and Ingenue essence.

Because she can pull off so many differents looks, it’s hard for me to choose her best TWICE era. Nevertheless, I have to give it up to the “I Cant Stop Me” era.  (Honorable mention to “Dance The Night Away”)

Kibbe Body Type and Style Essence: Hirai Momo

Momo is a Japanese singer and dancer from the Korean girlgroup TWICE. She was born in Kyotanabe in November the 9th in 1996. She has been taking dance classes since the age of three years old which explains her amazing dancing skills and stage presence.

Her official height is 5ft4 which is a little bit above average for a Japanese woman.

Momo has a compact and sharp body with a modest vertical line. She is usually typed as a Dramatic Classic under the Kibbe system. According to her Kibbe type, she should wear clear and accurate lines with a sharp edge. The following outfit has to be one of the best she has ever worn.

She has striking facial features, her cheekbones are high and sharp and her midface is longer making her look sofisticated. Yet, Momo possesses big round eyes which make her appear very youthful

I believe she has both Dramatic and Gamine essence. She looks quite mischivieous sometimes with her loopsided grin and she has some intensity in her gaze. Her essence combination make her very versatile in terms of fashion.

She can mix and match, wear very edgy geometric shapes with eyecatching details and acessories. Fitted and sharp edges look best on her.

Her stage outfits for “Perfect World” and “I Can’t Stop Me” definitely hit the mark in terms of style concept for Momo.

Her best era was definitely “Fancy”. Her hime haircut, and bold colors blocks looked amazing on her. Momo is a stunner and exudes something so intriguing that she could hold a big popular impact in the future.

Kibbe Body Type and Style Essence: Yoo Jeongyeon

Yoo Jeongyeon is a South Korean singer in the girlgroup TWICE. She wa born on November the 1st in 1996. She is a main vocalist and possess a powerful and mature voice that adds richness to TWICE’s songs. She is very caring towards the people close to her and likes to joke around with her members. 

She stands at 5ft6 which is above average for a woman in  South Korea. Jeongyeon has an athletic body with some soft blunt edges.

She is a Soft Natural in the Kibbe system. 

She has high cheekbones and full lips which make her look stunning. She looks down to heart and friendly but also very charming. I can guess she has some Natural and Romantic essence to her face. 

She can wear outfits that accentuate her waist and don’t cling to her body to create a flowy figure.

However, she can rock more edgy styles and still look good. Jeongyeon likes to show off her tomboy side and that works for her because she has a youthful face with a hint of a whimsical appeal to it.

Therefore I assigned her the Gamine essence on top of the Natural and Romantic essence. Her boyish looks appear harmonious on her and she looks at home when she combines characteristics from both her Romantic and Gamine essence.

I believe her Romantic and Gamine essence are stronger than her Natural essence. As a consequence, she would looks good in rounded and draped shapes around her neckline as well as cropped and fitted bottoms with original details. A balance between traditional feminine clothing and edgy vintage look.

She looks very womanly and she is able to rock versatile outfits together successfuly.

She shined the most in the “Yes or Yes” era in my opinion.
