After climbing the labyrinth of escaleras to Cerro Alegre (sometimes I take a wrong turn and somehow end up on the other side of the hill), after being greeted by the crew of construction workers that call me "la siñorita," though some know my name, after clearing the many new piles of dog shit out of my zone and trying to minimize the space the new pile of garbage that appeared over night, and after hauling all my supplies out of a tiny closet in the neighbor's backyard- I try to get as much work done before the wind tunnel commences. But since this starts as early as 3pm, I've got to stay on high alert, as the winds are powerful enough to blow over my ladder, my paint, and my water container full of brushes. If I survive all this, the pack of dogs may still sneak in and steal my lunch right out of my bag. I finished my image for a benefit song for #standingrock called #waterislife. I decided to turn the #blacksnake into a #rainbow, inspired by the rainbow sheen of an oil spill. The figure is #SittingBull who was a #lakota #sioux on the Standing Rock Reservation. Because the 'authorities' were afraid he was planning to join the Ghost Dance Movement, he was killed by Indian Agency Police during an arrest attempt as his people rose to his defense. This was after the betrayal by the US government on land treaties w/ the Sioux. History is a mirror that we continue to ignore.

Chief Josef led his people in fighting for their ancestral lands after being forcibly removed from them by the US government in 1877. They fought while retreating for 1,170 miles in SE Washington and SW Idaho. In the end, the Nez Perce lost their ancestral land and Josef was quoted as saying "I will fight no more forever." He died of a broken heart.
