I have a theory about this arc and I want to share it

I think this arc is going to parallel the tv station arc in terms of Fiona's character development. I also have hopes for this arc (and I'm gonna get there) but my prediction is that Fiona is going to see that Yor is competent—in fact, in some ways, more so than herself, either in protecting Anya or in caring for Loid or both—and will realize that Twilight deserves better than her, and begin to move on.
My reasoning for this is partially timing—we did just see Yuri begin to have this emotional journey—but also her thoughts at the start of the arc, partially foreshadowing that Yor's competence is going to matter soon.
There's also a peak chance in this arc for Fiona to see a different competence from Yor: her ability to care and comfort Loid/Twilight, that Nightfall would never succeed at providing.
And—if this is finally, finally the "Loid/Twilight realizes his feelings" arc, how completely incredible would it be to have Fiona giving him permission, implicitly or explicitly, with something of the form: "For your own good you need to trust someone to carry some of your burdens, and she is a better partner for you than I am."—would this be enough, you think, to get him to reconsider? Or would Sylvia need to weigh in as well?
And this brings me to some hopes for this arc:
Soft twiyor moments I will never apologize for wanting this
Twilight stays helpless, these are the consequences of his failure to trust anyone else
Yor and Fiona are badasses together semi secretly
Fiona getting over Twilight because she sees how good Yor is for him as discussed above
And finally! Really I think Endo has been doing a great job bringing Twilight as low as he can be without being completely incompetent and I am really hoping this is in service of him realizing his feelings and deciding to trust!!
Anya and Yor being in danger while he can do nothing about it is peak on the list of possible triggers here
Twilight realizing how important it is to let people in
And this gets to none of the possible Strix action that could occur but let's just say I'm here for it!!!!
(...a few months ago I wrote a post-reveal twiyor-go-to-a-neurological-conference fic, where they learn about Anya, so I'm soooooooo excited to see what happens here)
You see, the series' biggest villain, Donovan Desmond visiting while Loid is hospitalized for being constipated or something is peak Spy x Family comedy
Of course all of this happening with Anya being lost in the building (plot magic so she cannot meet Donovan and read his mind like last time), Yor having to prove she can be a good wife to her crush and Fiona trying to be the 3rd Mrs Forger.
Tracking the family through the openings: “Mixed Nuts”
The openings do a great job to show where the Forgers are as family. We can directly track the progression based on how the three characters are shown together in the openings. Starting with the first opening, we have “Mixed nuts.”
Everything, especially the family, is bright and abstract. We hardly see everyone in the same frame with their faces shown. When their faces are shown it’s conveniently abstracted by the simplified art deco style.
After the title card, Anya jumps forward to start the running sequence. A rain cloud emerges but Twilight jumps in with an umbrella to shield Anya from the rain as she runs along (Twilight changes Anya’s life by adopting her, and protects her from his dangerous work). Yor pops in to do the same after he leaves. (Yor quickly embraces a care-taker role with Anya, but she also thinks herself an outsider to an established family. No co-parenting happening here yet)
Then the rain clears up and Anya continues running through various exciting settings in different outfits from her initial ‘orphanage rags’ dress. (Her life is now filled with new excitement and a family that will care for her.)
Rain clouds appear once again but this time Anya pulls out her own umbrella (she’s learning new skills to protect herself) and continues running along happily.
The next montage features a series of Forger family outings as a little Anya keeps running with her umbrella at the bottom of the frame. The trio stands stiff, static, and far apart as various scenes paint over the Forgers in coordinated outfits with curated colours. (Three strangers pretending to be a family)
Then we get a glimpse inside the home. The forgers run in a panic as they attempt to escape the spotlight. Everyone scatters in a different direction while dressed in their un-matching loungewear. Anya remains the most in the dark (no one knows her secret), Twilight/Loid keeps his face in the dark, and Yor is the only one fully caught in the light (she’s pretty bad at lying). Then the TV changes to Anya’s face glancing in Twilight and Yor’s off-camera positions (she’s the only one that knows each of their secrets but is also nervous about keeping her own secret).
Our final montage is a series of fabricated family memories. (No running Anya at the bottom as the family stands stiff from a single perspective.)
The first scene looks similar to before but the family is actually standing closer together. Even in the fake family’s fabricated origin story, at one point, they still had to figure out how to be a family. The Forgers pretend to be beyond the ‘getting to know you’ stages. They have to pretend that chapter is long behind them. (A good lie has some truth, the truth here is that they actually have experienced this stage, the lie is that they are not beyond it.)
The scenes that follow portray the family from all sorts of perspectives, with slight movements, over the seasons, as they have seemingly grown closer. It also fits a fabricated timeline where Loid and Yor are dating around spring through summer and then start living together in autumn.
Then we see inside the perfect family home; the daughter playing by the window (where we can even see a healthy tree sprouting fruit), mom relaxing in a bath with a book, and father lounging on the sofa with a glass of wine.
The next sequence shows an even more relaxed form of the perfect family, and they finally face the camera to show their happy faces while lounging at a pool, doing something Christmassy, and then celebrating Anya’s birthday.
Anya’s birthday scene once again features a spotlight. Loid and Yor are moving off to the side so as to avoid the light, but once again Yor is closer to it. The lighting is cool blue as Anya glides into frame then changes to alarm pink once she’s under the light. Anya twirls while the colours flash (alarm triggered) until Twilight turns off the lights.
Then we get various shots of Twilight and Yor at work (for real) before returning to the personas used to protect their careers and Operation Strix.
Twilight/Loid and Yor smile at Anya dancing in a transparent foreground. Twilight stands still but Yor joins in by clapping. Behind it we see flashes of Twilight/Loid and Yor looking nervously alert. Then we see Anya, who, unlike her parents is in perfect view with a grey background.
Anya’s expression remains unchanged as the camera rotates around the table. Loid and Yor smile at each other with eyes closed as Anya looks straight ahead. Loid looks especially stiff and keeps one hand reaching behind (he has no intention of keeping this family after his mission). The final visual is the only time the Forgers are shown to be on the same page; all three laughing at the table with eyes closed.
I never before realised how so much thought went into the openings and how detailed they are. It's like we're seeing the future of the family but it's imagined and not-quite-real yet...but it could be.
Feel free to reblog for other people to vote. DO NOT SEND HATE TO ANYONE FOR WHAT THEY VOTED. This is merely for fun and to see what people genuinely think.
Although the Forgers are one of the most beloved families in fiction despite being not being a real family, Twilight, under the alias of Loid Forger in his current mission, seems to be the most controversial character amongst them. Quite a number of people are annoyed and vocal about how slow his developing investment in his family is compared to the other members and are quick to lash at him for it, his stoic and cold pragmatism, or how he purposely tries erase any semblance of attachment he has for them.
However, I find these traits quite fascinating and I don’t understand the constant criticism beyond wish fulfillment. Loid’s non-linear journey is a key component that makes his development distinct and actually elevates the story in a way that I don’t think people are appreciative about because they are so fixated on the destination or their interpretations and not the journey.
All of the Forgers and among several other characters are victims of war but what many people seem to forget that they are affected by it in different ways. In Loid’s case, it’s seclusion. Years of people he cares about disappearing in his life, partaking in the actual war himself, and being in a job that constantly discourages any form of attachment is naturally going to make him reluctant in forming connections and have no personal desires of his own. He didn’t have anyone close to him throughout these decades of hardship like how Yor did with Yuri, enabling her to retain the importance of families. And being a child and a domestic animal, Anya and Bond’s desire to have a loving family still reigns fresh in their hearts, despite the issues developed from their misfortune. Make no mistake. This isn’t meant to downplay Yor, Anya, Bond, or anyone else’s difficulties. Just why Loid is far more distant and disconnected in comparison.
Not everyone recovers at a similar pace, especially traumatized individuals. It makes sense that Loid would struggle the most with his feelings because it’s not only something he never felt or has not experienced in years but it’s something he fears that would hinder his duty. And it’s not like it’s a small task either…..he’s burdened with a world war prevention mission. It’s quite a shame to many people overlook this aspect of his character just due to their impatience and prefer to speed run it or dislike the character in general when it this aspect that makes his interactions shine when he does show to care.
Overall, I think Loid’s introspection, conflict, and complicated persona is easily one of the best aspects his character and adds a layers to Spy x Family’s story despite the focus on comedy.
(i also posted this on ao3 but you've read all of it now, so.)
fun fact i tried to model the handwriting part off of our only model of twilight's handwriting, that is, how lorand spoofy filled out his military form -- but aged it up / made it a little more rushed, considering the context.
