save the bees… and save the bats, save the wasps, save the moths. they are all pollinators, and they are all important to the earth, even if our human eyes don’t deem them as charming as hummingbirds. we have to protect them too!

Unpopular opinion, but I honestly love Poison Ivy as a prickly misanthrope reluctant to form many human connections way more than I like her as Chronic Mom Friend–not hateful, but certainly flustered and dismayed that people would seek her out for validation and support, of all people, instead of someone without a body count.

Poison Ivy pursed her lips. “Not to be rude,” she said, trying to keep the exasperation out of her voice, “But I’m not exactly ‘mentor-material’. Why don’t you hunt someone else down to be your lesbian adviser? Batwoman’s out publicly. Go pester her. If you’re not here about botan–”

The woman shrugged. “I tried Batwoman first,” she said, and gestured around the street, at the thick tangles of greenery enveloping every surface and building and spiraling towards the sky, at the twisted roots thrust between cracked asphalt and warped foundations, at the little eddies of golden pollen stirred up by their feet. “It’s just… you’re much easier to find.”

Ivy sighed and turned her face to hide her smile. “Very well,” she said. “If you like, I can put you through to an LGBTQ psychiatrist… free of charge. She’s not exactly licensed, though.”

Whats the worst plant advice youve ever heard?

I don't think I've ever heard anyone give genuinely bad advice, but I have had to talk people out of some very peculiar and dangerous ideas they'd gotten into their heads, including:

"No, your plants don't need Electrolytes, you're thinking of the movie Idiocracy. I extremely strongly advise against pouring kosher salt on your garden beds."

"It's very commendable of you to want to plant a tree for earth day, but it really is extremely dangerous and very illegal to plant one up at the dam. Yes, the roots can and will grow through concrete and could compromise the structural integrity of the dam. Yes, it could collapse and flood the city, also since 9/11 they've had armed guards up there to prevent exactly this kind of thing. I know, it's very disappointing, how about we look at some houseplants for your apartment instead?"

"No, the tomatoes will not hide your illegal weed garden." (this was before CO legalized it. It still doesn't work, the two plants are massively compettitive and will kill each other.)

"Yes, these are organic. Yes, we water them with the special hose that's connected to a well. But unless you have a well too, you're on city water and that's all flouridated. No it's not dangerous. No, I don't know any well companies but I'm sure you can look- Ma'am, if you're going to use slurs like that you'll have to leave."

"Yes, that's Echinacea, no it's not a substitute for any medication."

"No I don't think a cactus is a good houseplant if you've got a toddler living with you. Well you see, toddlers grab stuff to balance, and cacti are very sharp."

"No, we do not sell bee poison. We are, in fact, working really hard to avoid poisoning the bees. Yes, they do like flowers, and flowers like them. No, I don't think you can put bee repellent on the flowers I'm not sure 'bee repellent' even exists. Have you considered putting silk flowers out instead?"

"Yes, phosphorus is an important plant nutrient but emptying out old munitions onto the bed is the sort of thing you can get in trouble with the EPA for sir."

it has reached the stage in summer in iowa where the heat is unbearable (97 degrees F, 100 degrees with humidity where i am right now) but let me tell you the plants living along sidewalks and ditches, in undeveloped lots and comparatively wimpy gardens in the shade of hotels and houses, making up grass breaking through cracks in the concrete and neat landscaping around small man-made ponds, and growing pretty much indiscriminately wherever they physically can in the ground itself? full on thriving and also having sex
