I’m sorry this is just the funniest business move I’ve ever seen in my life. These dudes really took one of the most beloved and successful webshows there were, announced it’s end, let the internet mourn, and then two weeks later went “psyche.” They’re doing the exact same thing except on their channel and their terms. They get to make more money and steal what was probably the biggest audience Buzzfeed had for themselves. I love this. Chaotic good at its strongest. I hope Buzzfeed furious

Listen, I adore stellar firma. It’s a great podcast, and I look forward to it every week. It’s super funny but also emotionally hits hard when it needs to. It’s incredibly impressive with what they do with improv comedy.

But tell me, how the FUCK does one go about recommending it to anyone???

This podcast is an unending fever dream made from the whims of a chaotic duo and their equally if not more chaotic partners they bring in on this madness. I can’t just tell you “they design planets and it’s an improv comedy” because you’d miss the whiplash of going from “Trexel teaches the value of lying and degrading your customers in a ridiculous manner” to a legitimate emotional scene calling out shitty comping mechanisms and how your trauma does not excuse your actions.

And then the next episode, there’s a good three minute (at least) segment Trexel singing to a graphing device.

Said character also at one points breaks up with his partner, who is a dead fish, to date a broom. David has an entire drawer just filled with stuff he hates which includes socks. There’s an AI/computer system that I’m pretty sure would take over the world, but she already pretty much controls everything anyway. They played dnd as a bonding exercise one week and it’s never brought up again.

This podcast is lawless and not even Alexander J. Newall himself can do anything to change that.

The kiss SFX thing is so funny from the POV of a sound designer like. Okay I get you think it’s funny to say ‘Alex says a kiss sounds nasty but he made Prentiss’s worms and Jared sound like that and there’s the soundscaping of Stellar Firma!!’ And I think that misses a large point which is there’s a point to these scenes.

Prentiss and Jared sound horrific because it’s a horror show. You’re supposed to recoil, you’re supposed to go ‘oh gross!’ because it’s nasty! They’re a lady made of bugs and a man made of stolen flesh, the sounds they make are supposed to sound bad because they inspire horror. And Stellar Firma is farsical comedy, you can hear the moisturiser scene or the fish scene because they’re also supposed to be gross, this time to a comedic effect.

The fact that people draw parallels between them when talking about a potential kiss SFX is reason enough why it shouldn’t happen! Because a kiss conveyed entirely through audio will sound nasty, but from a design perspective it shouldn’t! A scene that would warrant a kiss should be one you want the audience to lean into, not away from, tender and loving and not at all adjacent to sketch comedy or straight up eldrich horror. Alex isn’t being a coward he just knows how to direct, and he knows it would massively mess up the tone of the show. So we settle for hugs

I need to share that I didn’t assume or realise trexel was a human person until it was said so and I’m still reeling I can’t imagine him as a person????
