lately i've been thinking about how when you created this blog i was like thank god because this AI epidemic among willmackers is such a low point in the fandom... and the fact that it has only gotten worse since + now i am seeing people actually saying they believe they are fr in a relationship on tiktok and twitter... like how did everything get WORSE why am i seeing l*rry-esque behavior. but once again thank you for your service i hope you're doing well <3

I appreciate you so hard for speaking up abt ai stuff bc honestly I spend way too much time on ao3 which combined with that fact that i’m a humanities major means i come across SO MUCH ai slop. It’s honestly depressing and it pisses me off so bad. It feels like At least 20 percent of the fics I click on are ai assisted and even higher than that of anything written in like the last 6 months. The worst part is when I go to the comment and they’re filled with people who have no idea praising the writing. I’m always tempted to comment something about how clear the usage is and they’re filled should not be posting anything generated without tagging (or at all which is my belief).How do you handle the frustration and urges to blow people up in their comments?????
To be totally honest, I've started logging into this blog less and less after someone told me to log off and get pregnant, so I couldn't tell you. I also stopped following the will/mack tag entirely, though I do write for it occasionally, and I'm lucky enough to work in a humanities focus where AI usage is openly scorned and everyone around me is particularly cranial, but I think the best advice I could give you is to take a step back from the Internet and go to libraries or book fairs or start consuming older media for a while until you remember what it is about reading and writing that you love.
Alltimecharlo's fics still being recommended 🙄 Good thing is they decided to put asks off so now nobody can request for more ai slop. Prayers all the others self-called writers stop posting too.
them turning off asks is extremely funny but also, I think it's worth noting when one of these names ends up on some people's fic rec lists. LOL. Always vet your follows guys lest you be subject to seeing definitive AI bullshit in your yaoi tag (happened to me on my other blog! Yikes!)
Hi! To the anons who have come in lately, I'm sorry that I can't give you a definitive answer on the works you've all asked me about. I don't really have time to read much these days because of the demands of my job, so please use your best judgment, or ask friends, or read other things for a while. Also, keep in mind that just because you dislike a fic, or dislike a person, doesn't mean they used AI for their works.

it’s bleak out here with all this ai generated slop…. what specific markers did you see that gave the fic away? was it the leaving the prompt in? was it like spacing? I feel like I have the hardest time sort of distinguishing an unedited from ai writing… maybe I’m just and idiot lol.
you aren't an idiot, but I do answer all of those questions in the blackboard discussion tag. I've also sorted my blog in my pinned post by author if you'd like to check out a specific person.

Hi! As a humanities Grad student who has been trained to catch Ai as I teach my own courses, I’ve been struggling to find the Ai in fanfics by Untilwefind. You added them to your post and I’ve been trying to find any follow-ups on your page about what specifically made you flag them? I believe whole heartedly in the anti-Ai mission but have enjoyed their fics and am just trying to se if there’s something I’m missing. I apologize if you did do a follow up and I just haven’t seen it, but if not, I know they’ve denied using it as well so I wonder if rescinding accusations (if you did make an honest mistake) would be beneficial too?

hi, thanks for sending this in! I got tired after going through six separate authors and wrote at the bottom of the OG AI post that I would finish the writeup later, upon which my inbox was flooded with assorted vitriol for quite some time and I completely forgot. (My bad LOL) Also, get well soon!
There are quite a few red flags for me, the first being that this author has chosen to rewrite their most recent work from the bottom up, likely for the purpose of removing the AI markers I and several others have highlighted over the last few months. The work constantly oscillates between third person close to third person omniscient POV; while this can also be a hallmark of inexperience or lack of attention to detail for amateur writers, it's not a particularly common one. More damningly, it was a longstanding pattern in the other works discussed on this blog that I chose to omit in light of more egregious flags. The dialogue in AI-assisted or generated works also tends to lose track of its choices by providing adjectives that don't actually make sense in context, as well as generating nonsensical dialogue and one-liners that often fly under the radar because they're just chippy enough (+ the already-established AI characterizations of Mack and Will that have grown extremely popular thanks to the alltimecharlo effect.) The end result is that a lot of these fics sound normal because the nuance of AI is familiar, which in turn makes it even harder to pick out. Alone, any of these details would be something to shrug off (aside from OP going back and rewriting the entirety of their ao3 catalog) but in tandem with other visible patterns that emerged when trying to avoid the ones from this post ([person speaking, action, description] and [action, description, action]) I feel that it's pretty damning evidence.
I believe that there is a much greater nuance than "drama" to be had about the usage of AI in fanworks, but I'm not going to rescind anything. Operate on your own judgment and read what you like, and if you feel that I am wrong there is a very easy way to avoid seeing my posts.

Posting AI-generated content to a platform intended to be an archive for writers is not appropriate use of the platform. On a platform intended for human creation, it is rude and inappropriate to clog search results with AI-produced content which often plagiarizes the work of human authors.
Use of generative AI is also horrible for our environment, leading to massive waste of fossil fuel energy and water. We should not be doing damage to our planet for the sake of generating (robot-produced, often plagiarized) fiction, especially when the joy of fiction comes from the creation and emotion of real people.
Rather than giving a prompt to a generative AI, people should consider attempting to write their own work, or asking another writer from the fandom if they would be interested in writing it. Anyone who is capable of typing a prompt into ChatGPT is capable of writing a story. The first attempts may not be amazing, but that is true of any skill, and anyone can improve with time and practice - and while ChatGPT may give you big returns in your time, it doesn't give you practice, growth, or creativity, which is where the joy of writing should come from.
To add to this, generative AI isn't an assistant for disability. Something that assists you helps you complete a task. You do the task yourself, the thing assisting you just helps you manage parts that aren't possible for you. Assisted writing could be using dictation, using a screen reader, relying on a spellchecker, typing instead of writing by hand, etc.
You aren't doing the writing yourself if you use generative AI. You're offering up a single sentence and asking a machine to steal the hard work of others so you don't have to actually write anything. The hard work you steal may well belong to people who actually need assistance with writing, and absolutely will not appreciate seeing the struggles they overcame being turned into slop for others to claim as their own.
Enjoy the creative process. Be part of the creative process. Don't become reliant on AI to the point where you can't think, create or act for yourself. This is why AI isn't an assistant. It takes independence and from you, instead of helping you realise it. It convinces you that you can't do things, instead of helping you try. It tells you to just leave it all to the machines and don't bother yourself with the fun (and struggles) of creating.
If you use generative AI, fuck you.
Generative AI generates content. That means the person using it isn't doing the work themselves. And that means it isn't a tool, it's a bypass. And it's a bypass used by lazy, entitled people who are more interested in "content" than in telling a good story. People who want headpats for being "creative" when they're so unoriginal they can't even do the work themselves.
Spellcheck, voice-to-print, screen readers, etc. aren't "AI," they're tools. They are what writers use to help capture their stories that they wrote. The writer does all the real work of creating and then uses tools to assist them in getting it down properly. Folks who try to lump it all together with shit like chatgpt are deliberately arguing in bad faith so that they can their machine-generated bullshit behind real tools that actually help.
