We report: for a while, as we walk down the street, the buildings and trees are too tall to let us get a good look, but the sunset’s glow is everywhere. It is incredibly damp, the amount of humidity barely under the point of saturation; sometimes, we feel a lone raindrop.
First of all I never thought I'd meet my goal, much less surpass it! Thank you so much everyone for your kindness and generosity. The donations, shares, and well wishes mean so much to me!
I posted a full update on GoFundMe, but here's a summary:
- Mira gets bloodwork done on Monday!!!! I'll share results as soon as I get them~
- Mira has been officially adopted into my home!! Originally she was going to be only a foster after her rescue along with her siblings. I have just fallen for her personality and quirks, and rescuing her from certain death along really pushed me to bond closely with her. She's going to live a long happy life with me!
- her siblings will still be fosters, but are looking to be longer term fosters due to all of the shelters I've contacted being full for cat intakes. I am working on getting everyone vaccinated and spayed/neutered, and the funds leftover in the GoFundMe after Mira's blood work will go towards that! After they have been vaccinated and had their surgeries I will work independently to place them in a new home, hopefully together as Kudzu and Sumo are buddies 💖
- Mira's mom is still planned to be a TNR, but she's heavily pregnant and about to burst!! Her spay is scheduled for the 27th, but I fear she may go into labor before then. Fingers crossed she holds out. I'll update as things progress
- I posted a breakdown of where all the funds are going along along with screenshots of the pricing provided by the low cost clinic I plan to take them to on my GoFundMe page. Anything left over once all care, vaccinations, and surgeries are complete will go towards paying for litter and food for them!
Some information that wasn't in the GoFundMe update as it came after I posted that:
- The goal I set has been surpassed, thank you so much again!!!!!!
- the humane society of my county is actually able to do their surgeries for way cheaper than the other clinics!!! They'll be doing them for $35, which is just crazy cheap!! I am currently in the middle of scheduling those appointments 💖
Took a nap, Mira hopped up on me and started making biscuits!!!! It's the first time I've seen her do that! She got coooozy and slept on me. I woke up and she was still on me 😭😭😭 I feel blessed
I just learned about this recently from a Viking reenactor! Indigo dye isn't blue until it oxidizes, so when you dye with indigo your cloth or thread doesn't come out of the water blue, it comes out and then reacts with the oxygen in the air and seems to spontaneously turn blue in front of your eyes. It's a really cool process to witness.
I've posted a new illustration to my Patreon! Full size JPG, PSD and video files can be downloaded according to the amount of support. https://www.patreon.com/satoshi_matsuura

Summary:
Wrigley’s Pleasure Planet. For decades, a legendary center of relaxation and even a bit of hedonism for the Alpha Quadrant’s, then the Federation’s citizens, as well as a few of the unaffiliated.
Unbeknownst to most of those citizens, Wrigley’s, or more formally, Beta Andronicus I, has been the center of disputes over the proprietorship of the planet, between the Deltan family currently in charge, to others who had been in partnership with them.
Now, as the century mark of Wrigley’s membership of the Federation approaches, Captains Chandra and Blackthorne, along with the crew of the Yorktown, will attempt to mediate a dispute between members of that family, with the intelligence-gathering abilities of the Federation at stake.
Oh, and they’ll be doing some relaxing, as well.
But of course they will. - Vice Admiral Jameson McCall, director of Starfleet Intelligence.
We report: after the bit of rain that we had yesterday, the night sky is clearer than it had been in some weeks, much less hazy. We leave the constellation names aside, and let ourselves sit there and pretend each moving, blinking satellite in the sky is a shooting star.
So I do 3D modeling and printing as a hobby, and a few weeks ago I designed wheel guards meant to prevent office chairs from running over cables and clothes... or your pet's tail.
I got the idea from cowcatchers old locomotives used to have.
Anyways, yesterday I uploaded the model to Thingiverse, and just hours after uploading it, the Community Relationship Manager of the whole website left a comment suggesting I enter the model into a competition that's currently being held on the site.
So I did... and now it's in third place not even a day later. First place is $500, but the competition still has a month to go.
Then the Community Manager contacted me again, telling me they want to feature my model in an upcoming design promotion.
Just, what is happening? I mostly made this thing for myself in, like, an hour, and now it's suddenly super popular? This is all a little bit overwhelming 😵💫
Other models I worked on for weeks didn't get nearly as popular. I swear, it's impossible to predict what people will like.
Anyways, if you want to print the wheel guards yourself, you can get the model here or here.
I also made a quiet version you can stick furniture felt pads on.
One of my favorite things about having a degree in biochemistry is going undercover at a store like Sephora. I can read the composition of the cosmetics and actually understand them. There’s no words to describe how great it feels. It’s like being in on an inside joke or secret
The main thing I observe is that a lot of employees recommend makeup that is chemically incompatible. For example, if you ask them to recommend you a foundation and concealer, a lot of times they’ll pick two products that are chemically immiscible, so they’ll NEVER blend together successfully.
Generally foundation/concealer is either water or silicone based. There are upsides to each based on your needs. However, water and silicone are immiscible, and so if your foundation is water based but your concealer is silicone based, you will never get a good blend between these products. You’ll have to go back to switch to something that works.
If you want to test for this in-store, mix the two on the back of your hand. If they form a uniform mixture, they’re miscible. If they separate, they’re chemically incompatible, and should not be used together. You can do this for any number of skin products. Primers, moisturizers, foundations, concealers, contour sticks, etc etc. Anything that comes in liquid or paste form.
You don’t need to understand all the chemicals on the label to run this experiment!
As someone in pharmaceutical sciences I also experience similar things, so a hint from me: collagen is useless. In a cream it will not penetrate the skin, so doesn't do anything. As a food supplement, lemme tell you a secret: collagen is a protein. And when you eat protein, your stomach thinks its food and chops it up, so it can be used to make your own protein. Collagen is just expensive protein powder, and doesn't do anything meat or a veggie substitute does.
The Washington Post reported July 16 that investigators were looking at the company as a potential source of contamination.
While it isn't confirmed it IS worth noting that Taylor Farms has had a dodgy record dating back decades.
Examples of past foodborne illness cases linked to Taylor Farms include an E. coli outbreak in 2024, possible listeria contamination in 2017 and a 2013 cyclosporiasis outbreak in Iowa and Nebraska.
According to a 2024 Denver Gazette article a Taylor Farms facility in Colorado Springs was found to have dozens of violations.
The local news in Boston is reporting the source as an unnamed supplier in Mexico, where Taylor Farms grows a lot of its produce.
Which is all to say that even if Taylor Farms isn't the source of this particular outbreak it's probably still best to try and avoid it. And wash everything thoroughly and so on.
