it’s kind of deeply depressing that there exists this entire vast subculture of progressive-learning 15-19 year olds online who are legitimately filled with anxiety over their media consumption diet and closely monitor themselves and others to make sure nothing they consume is Problematic™ lest they be ousted from their social circles. at the exact age where it’s actually good to have a varied media diet and be able to critically engage with harmful elements, too

No but Grian who has proven time and time again that he will dutifully follow what the universe has set before him dutifully following his soulmate. While Scott who has time and time again told the universe “Screw your plans and screw your so called fate,” rejecting the his soulmate for someone of his own choosing.

It’s first two winners, one that has always loyally followed it’s plan and one that has fought against them time and time again. Equal and opposite once again falling into their same patterns as always. One accepting whatever fate lays ahead of him and the other refusing. Ying and yang, push and pull. The universe watches its winners play out their song and dance again in equal delight.

Just six episodes in, Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings) is one of the best series we’ve ever seen. We were drawn in by the awesome little blob creature expecting a kind of funny kid show from the surface but what we got was an epic adventure that’s only just starting out and has already gone through intense drama, unpredictable plot twists and complex character writing while setting up some big mysteries to be unraveled.

None of the trailers or promos really communicate what it’s about, so what it’s about is an unusually tiny, deaf and nonverbal boy named Bojji who only communicates through sign language and grunts, whereas his father happens to be a giant warrior king. So Bojji is a laughingstock, many people are cruel to him and there are even people in high positions who want him dead, but he still wants to become a great leader, and there two people believe in him completely: his dying father, and his new friend Kage, a shadow child whose entire “species” (we don’t really know exactly what they are, yet) normally exist only to be thieves and assassins. Just when you’re about to forget that it’s an anime, Bojji also turns out to have a unique battle skill in that he’s not strong enough to hurt anyone, but he can dodge positively anything. He gets told this is a cowardly and lowly way to fight, but Kage, a natural sneak attacker, thinks it’s cool and that you should just be proud of whatever you know how to do!

So it’s a series that’s cute, fun and heartwarming but also has dark intrigue, action and high stakes, emotional storytelling, beautiful animation, great creature designs, multifaceted characters and an overarching theme of unconditional compassion that thoughtfully explores different forms of social marginalization and again that’s just in the first six episodes.
