My favorite Zuko headcannon is that he’s half-blind from the burn. Not just for angsty reasons, but because it would be so funny for him to not be able to see shit. Imagine someone hands him something, and he has to squint to try to read it with his only good eye. It would be funny if when he became Firelord, they had to have a specific advisor to read him the things that he is given, since he technically can read, but he’s just so slow at it that it’s just more efficient to have someone do it for him. Like imagine he gets an important document and he just hits the:

Ashes Of The Academy (2025)

Mai's father tells her to make friends with princess Azula in hopes of advancing his political career. She doesn't want to. She is scared. She obeys her father's wishes.

Zuko Alone (Book 2)

Azula puts an apple on Mai's head and sets it on fire, in a ploy to tease her about her crush on Zuko. Mai is annoyed and upset. She stays silent and lets it happen.

Return To Omashu (Book 2)

Azula tests Mai's loyalty. Mai rejects the exchange of prisoners that would have allowed her infant brother to return to her family in safety. She passes Azula's test.

The Drill (Book 2)

While Azula is otherwise occupied with fighting the Avatar, Mai passively disobeys her orders. She says, "Azula can shoot all the lightning she wants at me, I'm not getting in that wall-sludge juice." However, she does not verbalize discontent in front of Azula.

(Book 3)

Mai and Zuko are enjoying time together. Azula interrupts them. When they refuse to be separated, Azula says, "Oh Mai, Ty Lee needs help untangling her braid." Mai acquiesces to the implied demand, and says, "Sounds pretty serious." However, as she gets up to leave, she shoots a sideways glare at Azula.

The Beach (Book 3)

Mai lashes out in retaliation to Azula's psychoanalysis. She is angry.

The Boiling Rock (Book 3)

Mai commits treason to free Zuko from prison. Finally, she is done being controlled by fear and expectation.

Misogyny in atla: a masterlist

Katara - at aang's beck and call for 3 seasons while he does NOT return that energy ever, and every time she needs some grace & support she has to seek it out in others because he cant give it to her. He then kisses her without consent and is never made to apologize by the narrative. They get married btw

Azula - grew up in the same traumatizing household as zuko, seen as a monster by her mother & a tool by her father, constantly dehumanized by the authors and made out to be worse than her genocide supporting father when she is 14 and he's a grown man. Rots in an insane asylum with no help or care given to her.

Toph - the best treated of all the women, while also being portrayed as boyish/masculine. In and of itself masc women are great. When two white men demean every female character except the tomboy, it looks bad.

Mai - literally a prop in zuko's storyline

Whenever I see people talk about lok katara theyre like "oh she seems so sad and lonely, its because her husband is dead :(" and im like fuck off!! Yes she IS obviously sad and lonely, and the writers probably wanted us to think it was because of his death. But the way they wrote it, it looks more like it's because she was pigeonholed into the role of The Avatar' Wife above all else, she was never given credit for any of her efforts post war, she was left ALONE to take care of two children while her husband played favorites with the youngest which ultimately revealed that he subconsciously devalued her culture (which was always very important to her!), and her beloved brother's role as a nonbender. He spends the entirety of the og series struggling to control his emotions, he never learns, never grows, and she takes it upon herself to make sure he doesn't kill their friends when they disagree on something. She spent the majority of her life playing mama to a guy who forced himself on her immediately after she told him no. She coddles him and works so hard to love him only for him to say "you wouldnt understand" and discredit her at every turn. And then! He died relatively young and by then the kids were all living their own lives! She IS lonely, she IS sad, and by lok she has been for fucking DECADES because literally nobody prioritized her feelings or took care of her almost ever. Even in her old age shes babysitting her grandkids and healing her husband's next incarnation who STILL fucking yells at her and hits her with the angry emo brooding bs. Its a classic example of a woman being whittled down to nothing because of her marriage. She gives and gives and gives and nobody gives back. She doesnt even really have contact with her friends that we know of. "Oh their relationship was so beautiful look how sad she is that he's gone" FUCK! YOU!

The thing is. No, i dont doubt that katara loves aang. I doubt that aang loves katara as fully as she loves him, and that's what bugs me. Imagine being at a guy's beck and call for like a year and a half and then having him not only flirt with other women regularly and not ever help you do basic household chores, but give you next to no empathy when you need it? And then helping him end a war, MARRYING him, mothering his children, and leaving your home for him only for society to think of you only as his wife/the mother of his kids and never acknowledge your efforts, and he doesnt even challenge that. Its one of those ships you can tell was written by a man who wants his woman to worship him and ask for nothing in return. Im sure they'd have butchered zutara as well if it was canon because theres clear subconscious misogyny issues here

With all this Korra discourse going around yet again with the new movie leak, it’s got me thinking about that one illustration interpreting Korra resetting the cycle as freeing the past avatars from their shackles of duty to reach enlightenment. Just the image of kyoshi and rangi reuniting somewhere in the after life after hundreds of years apart due to the cycle resetting is my favorite thing ever. Like yes, I think it would be impeccable writing for the avatars to be released from duty after 10,000 years serving the world to be finally put to rest, Korra I love you forever.

And Zuko goes quiet. Thinking. Then he says, "Maybe I should send him on a quest to capture the Blue Spirit to regain his honor"

like you can just tell that the writing room wasn’t really thinking about the ramifications of Jet’s all child gang, that is was regarded as a lost boys hide out situation, but man does it add a lot to his character.

He’s the leader. The first time we meet him he isn’t just attacking fire nation soldiers, he’s on a supply raid. He is sixteen and has taken the responsibility of giving children who have lost their parents and homes to the war a home.

And he’s completely at war with himself because he wants his kids to be safe and he wants to make the fire nation pay. When we first meet him he’s convinced he can do both, but the second time around he’s unable to resist his anger and rage.

He succumbs to his anger because as much as he’s a leader and a soldier and a surrogate, he’s still a child too.
