i'm glad that the majority of the stranger things fandom has reached an understanding that, yes, byler IS canon but in a very late-2000s anime kinda of way.
"Why did the military let them go?" They didn't. Why do you think Mike only talks about El's potential survival in DND speak and refers to her as "the mage"? It is entirely plausible that the Wheeler house (and everyone else's house, for that matter) is completely mic'd and surveillanced by the military in case the party finds out new information on El.
The military might not be able to kill the party, but they will never leave them alone.
willel (1995)
They could have had scenes where Will looks over and tries hiding a Playgirl magazine he found in Nancy's room. Where he feels awkward around shirtless guys in the men's locker - maybe even feeling guilty around the Core Four even though he's not attracted to Lucas or Dustin. Where maybe he's a bit flattered by Steve "The Hair" Harrington because who wouldn't be? Where maybe he meets a random guy who maybe sends him a signal but he's unsure whether to pursue it or not.
There were a multitude of ways they could have wrote Will's sexuality to not revolve around Mike if they weren't intending on them ending up together.
I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
As some of you may have seen on the news, our city has been occupied by federal ICE agents for many weeks now; estimates hover around 3,000+ ICE agents. Agents have been waging a 24/7 campaign of terror against Minnesota communities, with a major emphasis on Minneapolis. They have committed mass abductions of our BIPOC and immigrant neighbors; they have subjected women and trans community members to gender-based violence; they have murdered two Minneapolis residents. They have detained children as young as 2 years old. Toddlers. They used a 5-year-old child as bait to lure his family from his home to be detained.
Whatever you think it's like in Minnesota right now from wherever you live, it's worse. It's far worse than you're imagining.
On January 7, ICE agents murdered Renee Nicole Good, 37, a queer woman, poet, mother, and wife. They shot her 4 times as she tried to drive away from them. They refused offers from observers to provide her medical care. As she lay dying, a male ICE agent called her a f-cking b-tch.
Today, on January 24, they murdered Alex Jeffrey Pretti, an intensive care unit nurse. Several agents - at least 7 - beat Alex repeatedly in the head, tear gassed him, restrained him, and repeatedly shot him at point blank range. Before they murdered him, Alex had stepped in to help a woman whom the agents pushed to the ground.
If you do not live in Minnesota, Stand with Minnesota is a very helpful website filled with places to donate, mutual aid information, scripts for contacting your elected officials, calls to action, and more.

If 'Purple Rain' is Mike and Eleven's song then 'Here Comes the Rain Again' is Will and Mike's song.
'Purple Rain' being an apology for failing love, for not being what their partner needs, for "stealing one from another", for friendship ending due to the pursuit of romance that wasn't right for either one of them, for not being able to make up one's mind so their relationship is left in this state of ambiguity and confusion.
'Here Comes the Rain Again' being about love after heartbreak and tragedy and starting a new love, about love feeling both like "a memory" and "new emotion", about having direct wants for openess and communication, about wondering if the other person feels the same way.
Stranger Things season 1: beneath the superficial image of “peace and prosperity” in 1980s small-town America, there was the painful legacy of countless atrocities committed by the American government in the name of ‘freedom.’
Stranger Things season 4: evil Russians (not Soviets) have sent our All-American Hero to the gulags which apparently still exist in the 1980s and it’s up to us to save him 🇺🇸🦅🫡
There’s probably a term that already exists for this but if there isn’t I’m gonna call it ‘Rambofication’ in honor of its probably most well known instance: Rambo First Blood was about a soldier, John Rambo (that’s his actual name I’m not doing a bit), returning home from the Vietnam war, so traumatized by war that he brought the war home with him to a small town, unable to adapt to life without strict military discipline and hierarchy. Subsequent Rambo movies were about how John Rambo was the only supersoldier tough enough and patriotic enough to kill faceless hordes of dastardly foreign commies.
Ergo, ‘Rambofication’ is the process of a series starting with a relatively nuanced or subversive narrative before its sequels become a shallow embrace of the very narrative it originally subverted. It happens surprisingly often!
Rosemary's Baby
HE HAS HIS FATHER'S EYES
This isn't hate but y'know what the funniest thing about Mike and Eleven's relationship is? It's that while Robin and Vickie were planning to go to Enzo's after the battle, Lucas and Max were going to go to the movies and Joyce and Hopper also went to Enzo's...
Mike's 16-year-old ass wanted him and El to completely uproot their lives in Hawkins to move to a far off place (in Iceland, apparently) and live out the rest of their lives there with seemingly no contact with the rest of their friends or families.
Okay so Mike saying, "Friends don't lie." to El but then saying, "Friends? No thanks... Best friends." to Will?
So you're saying that Mike doesn't want to be just friends with Will because he knows friends do, in fact, lie to each other so when he tells Will he wants to be his "best friend" he's telling him he doesn't want Will to lie to him ever again? Address me.
