January 2026 be like:
The holdovers (2023) is a Christmas movie for those that understand how inherently sad and yet joyful of a holiday Christmas is. It’s about being slammed with the memories of all those that are not with you to celebrate, the loneliness of having to one to celebrate with, and the impending end of another year to remind you what you haven’t done - it is also an opportunity to spend time with family and friends and to reach out to the people in your life and make those connections, and the beginning of a new year another chance to do all of those things you had been meaning to do.

My favorite line in Wake Up Dead Man is when Cy says him and Wicks would rule as father and son "just like the rebels" because of course Rian Johnson would write in a scene of right wing youtube grifter misunderstanding Star Wars. Rian Johnson stays on top
Actually huge shoutout to the subtle but entirely voluntarily included detail that yes! Benoit Blanc, as a queer man, would likely not feel comfortable in a church!
It's just little things like this. Honestly, it's avoidance of discrepancy to me. I would find it a little bit odd had he just waltzed in. Even religious queer people need to scope out the church. I wasn't raised religious, I do not have religious trauma...I do not feel comfortable in Christian churches. Queer people often do not feel comfortable in churches.
Not required to the story, but it's little details like that that are so important. It wasn't required, but it's simply realistic. You established he's queer. The little effects of that on his life don't end at a Hugh Grant cameo.
It's just things like that they make me go "they didn't forget he's queer". "They never forget he's queer". I don't know, I feel like so often, people's way of being an "ally" is to see you as straight in between the moments you contradict that image, and that's what they see as "tolerance" so it's just nice to see little things that make me go "it's was never not on your mind. It is something you constantly know about him, just like that he's southern."
And so it's a natural progression for someone who did not feel the need to make themselves forget, to go "he's queer, let alone yeah - southern queer, and he's walking into a church. There is a natural way for this character in those circumstances to react."
And yes, it is with a bit of tension.
Little details. Little details that remind me you aren't avoiding it until you bring it up for ally points then back to it. You still know and you know what that means. When you thought of Benoit Blanc in a church you didn't forget that would mean something. The second you pitched it, you already knew it had implications.
I just appreciate that they did not, even in this tiny way, treat a queer character like a straight character if his wife was a husband. Queer people are not straight people flipped. Our identities do not end at our relationships. Yes. He would feel uncomfortable in a church. Because he is a queer man.
